Well "black" is not racist. But you really didn't need to say it. Would you have inserted white if the girl happened to be white... There is too much sensitivity about racism these days. Every1 if is racist to a certain extent by recognising differences in others. Even if this internalised racism.

Right well more info - There was a group of four girls dancing and the other three were white. I thought it was more racist that she picked up on it as racist despite the fact that I was just describing the girl as if you would say the blond girl of the group is really tall.

He probably would have said "that blonde girl". The fact that the girl was black in probably a crowd of white makes it helpful in highlighting the person he's talking about.

but there are way more white people in ireland than there are black people. it's just how to distinguish one person form another. same as saying oh look how tall that girl in the green top is, if she's the only girl wearing a green top.

If the girl was the only girl about then indeed pointing her out she is black would be unnecessary, certainly not racist though. But if there were a load of girls about then it should be perfectly fine to use skin colour as a means of identification assuming all the other girls were white. It would be like if there was one tall white girl among a group of black girls it would be fine to say " Jesus how tall is that white girl?"

People who automatically scream "Racist!!!" whenever the topic of skin colour comes up should be slapped.

To point out a person its usually easier to just insert their most defining feature to show who you are talking about (ie that guy over there with the curly hair), in Ireland usually a black persons most readily recognisable feature is their skin colour as they are in the minority. Every one is picking on me I agree with all of you that it's stupid. I just think the word "racist" should be banned cos whenever you recognise any difference in someone you're automatically seen as a racist. That was my point. If this is so, then we are "all" racist. Good question. People tend to change their opinion based on the context. Also the girl who picked up on the apparently "racist" comment must be well aware that in fact the girl was "different" therby rendering her a racist. Blah... My head hurts. I couldn't care less.
