Heart says Powell but the head says Gay...

Would love to see the Jamaicans win the 100m 200m and the 4x100

Gay has the head and the top end speed. The Jamaicans' form will tighten at about 80m.

I'm going with Gay purely based on the evidence that he can perform at major championships.

Its Gay for me too, but if everybody runs to form and there are no injuries it should be one heck of a final.

A Bolt from the blue eh!? Not really. Bolt was the first junior to run a sub 20sec 200m and has been a highly prodigious talent since his early teens.

Bolt is only 21, but he's been around forever, winning the World Junior crown at 200m in 2002 at 15.

He holds the age records for 200m for ages 15 through 19.

For track cognoscenti, it looks like he's finally fulfilling his rich promise. To the average sports fan, he's a Bolt from the blue of the Caribbean.

I'm going to stick my neck out and go for Bolt, He seems to be really growing race by race . From what i've read of him , this was his first year of doing a real hard winter, looks like he tended to shy away from the hard work.. But its going to be a great event this year, I only hope that there are no issue off the trac that will take away from it.

Is there a fantasy olympics on on go?

cheers for the info - reckon his parents should've called him Thunder. Now *that* would have been cool.

Agree that he seems to have quite a momentum behind him...

It must be such a kick in the face for some of the lesser sprinters that can run 10s flat - but will possibly never break into the 9s - and then you have someone like Bolt who on a bad day will run faster than them. Craig Pickering (is that his name?) I think is who I'm looking at here.

Tyson Gay injured at Olympic trials in the quarter finals of the 200m. So he won't be competing in the 200m in Beijing and depending how serious his injury is, he mighten't be there at all! Three potential Olympic medals gone out the window.

Apparently Gay's injury is only cramp, with little serious repercussions.
An USA Track & Field official added: "It was a severe cramp of his left hamstring. There is no apparent damage otherwise."

Similar to what happend to Michael Johnson and Maurice Greene in 2000. 6 weeks to Beijing, loads of time to recover.

However, Gay missing the 200m leaves it wide open for Bolt, might even help him decide to only run over 200m!!!!!

Powell will want it more than the other 2 after all the slack he got last season so therefore he gets my vote! Bolt will piss the 200 and he knows it so he will do the 100 also.1st Powell,2nd Gay,3rd Bolt[his heart is more in the 200].We shudnt rule out Atkins either and maybe sum super drugged up chinese dude that will dissapear afterwards!:D Id stick a bet on hession making the 200 final no prob once he gets a bit of luck with lane draws and whos in his heat.Fingers crossed.:)

I really hope Bolt does the double. I like to see pure talent shine through and he has talent in spades. Think Johnson might lose his 200m record to this guy soon.

Really? Is that what it means (to you)?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,078 ✭✭✭✭LordSutch

    Asafa Powell
What I meant by 'special' was that it will take a very special (very gifted athlete) to better 19.32 4 the 200m after a previous poster said that 'Bolt' might better Johnson's 200m record, it took 20 years for Mennea's record of 19.72 to fall, and I will be amazed if 19.32 falls yet again!

Of course drugs are abhorrant in any sport & any athletes using them should be routed out and given the harshest punishments by the appropriate athletic authority.

I still think Tyson will win the 100m ...................

Anybody been watching the Olympic flashes on eurosport this week. Went into detail about the 3 of them and after watching (i don't know why though) I think Gay will win. It looked like he wanted it more, plus the fact he won't be in the 200m.
Head says Gay, heart still sasy Powell.

I'm now starting to think Bolt will win it after the way he ran in Stockholm and London. In Stockholm compared to Powell's start he was way behind and his last 40m was savage and he would have won if he dipped. In London in the 200 he was in a different class running 19.7 so easy and looking around and being a cocky b*stard. Powell has had injury problems and so has Gay and you need to be at 100% for the Olympics. If Powell is to win he'll need his usual blistering start and put the pressure on Gay and Bolt and then stay cool at 60m when the heat comes on. If Gay or Bolt are to win they will need to stay calm for the first 60m when Powell is putting the heat on and then bring it home in the last 40m but also stay calm at 60m when the other guy is starting to make his move. But then if its all about who is going to stay calm you would have to fancy Tyson Gay. Its hard to call.

This is great, I can't wait for the 100m final, it along with Xiang and Robles in the 110 hurdles could be this years Cathy Freeman '00 or Michael Johnson '96 moment.

There'll be riots in Beijing if Robles beats the Chinese goldenboy and it is a strong possibility. There's a lot of exciting match ups. Does anyone know how Alisson Felix's preparations are going? She looked phenomenal at the World Champs.

The pressure is off Xiang now with Robles' performances this year. China is not like Australia in 2000 and Greece in 2004, they will win lots of medals (more than likely more than any other country) so the country will not be as hung up on Xiang as Greece were on Kederis or Australia on Freeman.

Felix looked poor in London two weeks ago...

I am now steering towards Powell in the 100m. His start in his last three races has been phenomenal, way better than last year. If he can keep his head together, I think he can hold off Gay and Bolt.

Really want Powell to win the 100m and Bolt the 200m. Would be great to see the Jamaicans sweep the board in the men's and women's sprints (100/200 and 4x100).

What do people think now. Usain looks savage, Asafa looks strong, Tyson looks average. I think Tyson will come good tomorrow and run fast. I hope Asafa wins and for a weird reason I think it may help having Usain there but Usain looks too easy at 9.92 and at this stage must be the hot favourite. Can't wait. Usain is in semi 1 tommorrow with Atkins, Burns, Dix and Frater. Tyson and Asafa are in semi 2 with Patton, Martin, Thompson and Obikwelu.

When you see Michael Johnson speechless after Bolt's run you know it was more than something spectacular. If Bolt gets a start like that, there is no doubting he'll win, however his start has not been consistent while Powell's has the last five races.

I really want Powell to win, and Bolt the 200m. But most of all I want one of the Jamacain's to win gold.

Gay looked shocking and unless he is playing games, which I don't think is his style, he is not even a medal contender...

Cannot wait for 21 hours time!

    Tyson Gay
Reports are that Gay's hamstring may be acting up, but I would take everything with a pinch of salt in the run-up to tomorrow night!

I saw Bolt's two heats, and he looks like he's in a different class to the rest of the field. He hasn't gone above three-quarter pace from what I can see! Powell has the better start, but Bolt's loping run looks like coupled with a decent start he's the favourite. Powell needs a massive first 60m and hope to hang on, but it's almost too close to call.

    I say Bolt / Powell / Gay.

There's a possibility Bolt could go 100m / 200m / 400 x 100m in these games, which would be some achievement as it hasn't been done since 1984.

I said in Post #25 that Tyson would win the 100m, but err hmm cough cough, maybe not :D

Was listening to Michael Johnson talking to Gabby on the Beeb, did you know that BOLT is 6'5" which Johnosn says is exceptionally tall for a sprinter, making it harder for initial leg speed on take off, but then from 20 Metres, 30 Metres, through 40 Mteres he takes off into Top Gear, relaxes, takes a look left & right and just jogs over the finsh line in 9.92 ~ nice :)

I'd imagine anyone who voted today went for Bolt. He was awesome, I understand Michael Johnson's amazement, thats how I felt myself when he ran his heat and then again when he ran 9.92 like that in round 2.

Bolt wins with a new world record. No american medal in the 100. Powell for silver and I'll go for Churandy Martina for the bronze as he also looked very impressive today. Dix also looked good but I don't see him making the medals. Gay will struggle to make the final by the looks of things today.

I expect Gay to improve round by round and he'll be close to his best in the final tomorrow.

Everything is being analysed and being debated here - starts, first 20m, first 60m, last 40 etc.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is temperament. We don't know much about Bolt's; Powell's is brittle to say the least, and Gay doesn't have a nerve in his body.

When they get on the starting blocks for tomorrow's final, all that has gone before in the heats and semis will count for nothing. It's who puts it all together for that 9.7 or 9.8 secs that will win the gold. I'm not ruling out Gay.

+1 on all counts. And I wouldn't mind but Gay is one of the more likeable American sprinters in years.

Powell for all the heartbreaking chokes (sorry Asafa but its true). I still think Bolt will win, but Gay is the only one proven at getting through the rounds

have to admit I wasn't that surprised Tyson didn't get through - he looked like he was going to lose before the race even started...

...especially when you compare him to Bolt. Such a contrast in mentality I suspect.

    15 mins to go

Bolt is going to walk it!!! 9.70 or less maybe?!!? Powell 2nd...
