Just watching the Jackal now. If people in the raa spoke like Richard Gere is right now, I dread to think how different Irish history may be today...

I saw this thread and that was the first filum that came to mind.

What's-her-face in Micheal Collins comes a close second.

Kevin Spacey in Ordinary Decent Criminal was pretty mixed up.

I can't believe no one mentioned Tom "didly-dildy oi" O'Cruise in Far and Away. I had to turn it off half way through because it was really embarrassing.

Natasha McElhowen (or however you spell her name).
That "Oirish" accent when she played the IRA gangster in Paris in "Ronin"......
    It was cringeworthy........

On a similar note- in "Heroes" the episodes that were supposedly in Cork- and the accents once again........ arrrrgghhhhhhhhhh

Oh actually, has anyone watched 'Burn Notice'? Great show but the accent your one Fiona had in the first few episodes was horrendous. Luckily they've now pretty much dropped it.

Hmm, I thought both herself and Jonathan Price did fairly well accent wise. Definitely not great, but nowhere near as bad as Tom Cruise or Gerard Butler.

Irish accents should be done by Irish people in Irish films.
    Alexander was just wrong.

Weren't they actually Irish actors as well?

"The devils own" Bradley pitts "belfast" accent made it real hard to get into the film at all

Were they ? I never knew that. Maybe they were just overdoing it, plus the dialogue itself wouldn't have helped lend to the overall impression.

Pierce Brosnan is a paradox, an Irish actor who has the worst Irish accent ever!!!

What about stereotyped phrases they use in films, like ... "top of the morning tee yee" and talking about stuff like leprechauns, banshees, shillelaghs and the like.

Sean Connery in Darby O'Gill and the little people. That was a real didly eye film anyway but his accent was terrible :p

He did a remarkable Spanish accent in Highlander, as in Scottish Spanish:p

I'm going to second Colin Farrell in Alexander. :D:D The whole thing was so embarassing to watch. The water got muddied imo as to what accent he was trying to achieve. I don't think he even had a baldy.

Yes, those cretins in PS I Love You. For f*ck sake. 'Waylans'.

    Shudder.

Linda fiorentino in 'ordinary decent criminal' -she was great in the last seduction and ok in dogma but ordinary decent criminal accent wise was total rubbish.

The accents in that were awful, stereotypical Irish accents for Macedonian characters???

    Ahriiite there, Patroclus?

Didn't Miley from Glenroe even make an appearance at the start?

i was just going to say! Connery never bothers with accents too much.

But it's gotta be Cruise in Far & Away FTW! "Ahhh Shannon!"

well, i dont know about fake irish accents, most of them i can live with, even if it does continue to feed the god awful world view of the stereotypical irish accent.

    however...

i can never forgive colin farrell for his 'ride macedonians, ride' in Alexander.

I mean seriously, i thought he was going to break out into the macedonian version of 'roide sally roide'.

i cried the day i saw that.

+1. As soon as I saw Cork come up on screen I knew it was going to be bad, but not that bad.

Some episode of captain planet was really bad also when they went to the north to stop a nuke.

Aside from that ass clown, Tom Cruise, I would go with 'Seamus McFly' in BTTF III. Made me chuckle though. :)

Seamus: Maggie! Fetch some water, we got a hurt man here!

apart from that fact that it's the usual irish drivel from hollywood there's nothing wrong with the accent..or maybe I'm missing something here...

There are worse accents in it, but that's the only youtube clip I could find! :) It's just so Oirish that all the accents sound ridiculous.
The girl singing was ok though

Heroes did a complete hatchet job on the whole Irishness thing.

    Worst accents I'd ever heard....

Peter wanting his pounds back from the bookies...

    English reg taxi etc

Ha I thought that was hilarious! - just added to the brilliance of the film

About 3 or 4 characters in The Boondock Saints were pretty terrible. Didn't think much of the film either, tbh - Karl Hungus, you haven't failed me on any recommendations bar that one :p
