Hi, this is my first time posting here so be gentle.

I love walking, running, hiking, climbing, cycling etc, but i find i lose my breath VERY quickly.

I smoked for 6/7 years and quit 8 months ago, so i understand i did most of the damage of my own free will, but i was just wondering does anyone here have any tips for catching my breath sooner? or
will that just increase with more training i do?`

Could be a matter of lung capacity recovering. But having said that maybe you do need to train more. What do you mean by losing your breath? Is your breathing elevated/uncomfortable, or do you 'gas' i.e. have to stop completely to get your breathing under control before you can move again?

Getting stronger will help, as then the tasks require less muscular effort, and you're less likely to fatigue quickly.

A lot of peole recommend swimming for increasing lung capacity, but I'm unsure of the transfer from swimming to other activities.

    i "gas" i guess.

Well, i guess i'll just do more swimming and keep at it :)

It takes time and training. Enjoying all your activities above but only going say... once a week on the weekends won't improve anything.

I also smoked for at least 10 years (gave em up roughly 3+ months ago now) but even before I stopped smoking I had started to train with specific goals in mind and my aerobic ability increased dramatically but then I'm out running/cycling/swimming 4-5 days a week for the last 5ish months.

    • Train more
    • Take up a wind instrument (e.g. saxophone - bit of a drastic solution I suppose)
    • When exercising see if you can breath only through your nose without getting out of breath. If not slow down to a pace which you can, then start breathing through your mouth. Keep at this pace and gradually build up over weeks.

When you are running are you jsut jogging or doing some speed work, maybe add some 100 m or 200 m burst in your run, maybe one or 2 to start with, then jog or walk this should improve your breathing...
