With the World Juniors fast approaching (8th of July), I thought it might be an idea to set up a dedicated thread for it rather than mixing it in with the Olympic qualifiers thread.

So far, our list of qualifiers looks like this (which must be the largest number we've qualified for any Junior Championships?):

    _________________________________________________________________

    Event Performance Name

    200m 23.91 Niamh Whelan

    High Jump 2.14 Barry Pender

    1500m 4.22.29 Ciara Mageean

    High Jump 1.80 Pamela Hughes

    400m Hurdles 59.95 Kalyn Sheehan

    100m 11.71 Niamh Whelan

    100m 12.04 Joan Healy

    100m Hurdles 13.92 Mairead Murphy

    800m 2:06.49 Ciara Everard

    400m 46.70 Brian Gregan

    1,500m 4:22.97 Sara Treacy

    10k Walk 50:42 Laura Reynolds

    10k Walk 43:57 Paul Fitzpatrick

    100m Hurdles 14.17 Sandra Lawlor

    400m Hurdles 59.55 Jessie Barr

    _________________________________________________________________

I'm pretty sure Tara Jamieson is meant to be on that list aswell, as she secured the 3000m s/c standard recently.

I would expect the O' Ffrench Carrolls to be added to this list in the near future, possibly after the Junior Champs in Tullamore tommorrow. They haven't run that much all year, because of their Leaving Cert I believe, I just hope they get the standard on time.

Another possible addition is Colin Quirke, who competed at the World Youth Champs last year in the shot and discus, but I haven't heard anything of him recently.

Chris Russell could be another addition in the 100m/200m.

Should be some good action down in Tullamore tommorrw, with people trying to get last minute standards.

    Standards are here: http://www.iaaf.org/WJC08/standards/index.html

Quirke has thrown 18.95m this year. I'm not sure if this is with the 6kg shot, though. The standard is 18m.

Edited to add: He's also thrown 55.81m with the discus. Again, I'm not sure of the weight.

15 athletes qualified and probably a womens 4 x 1 team also. Great credit to the coaches, AAI and the athletes on what is a great achievement and our greatest ever at this level.

The diversity of events and brilliant to see so many sprinters and hurdlers. 4 hurdlers with times and two high jumpers is great to see. Only 3 guys though, the women are kicking ass!!

Results are starting to come in from the Junior and U23 championships in Tullamore. http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=4306#more-4306

Not so much on the Junior side, but Kelly Proper, who competed at the last World Juniors in Beijing, became the fastest Irish Woman of any age this season, with a wind-legal 11.69 in the 100m today. This bodes very well for her Long Jump.

Who do people think will be in the best shots of a final. Gregan and Whelan are the stars of the team but with the US/Jamaican strength Whelan could find it hard to make a final. Grego could do it and a 46.5 I'd say would get him there. If in a final who knows what would happen, the man could do anything. Ciara Everard is also in with a shout as being an 800 tactics will come more into play and seeing as she isn't scared to go out hard I'd say she could do well, a PB and a 2:05 would do it. Mageean could also make a final if she had the dream race in the heats.

Glad that they've decided to take a 4x4 relay team.

Slightly perplexed that the O' French-Carrolls didn't make an attempt to qualify.

This is the most promising news in Irish athletics in years. If even 25% of these athletes push on and progress to elite senior ranks we will be in good shape for the future. The Euro U23 are next year and that'll be a great stepping stone for the 19 year olds while those still junior will have the Euro Juniors.

Only black spot is looking at those mens junior middle distance rankings, its striking that none of them came close except maybe the two North Down boys and even then not within a second of the standard. I think a 4 x 1500 relay at world junior level would be a good idea for getting juniors exposure at this level.

Looking forward to this! Does anybody know will the IAAF website stream this live, they had this facility available at Hengalo in Holland last year? I view is a must!

Finals must be goals as Tingle has said earlier that and some good pb's

A great team going and youthful some will have this experience before even going to the EYOF has to augur well for the future!

Relays! They seem to be the theme of the summer of 2008.

Personally I thnk this is fantastic giving the youngun's a taste of what is available to them.

Fair paly to AAI and the Gary Ryan's of the world for their work a success before the games start

    Yours

It's definitely being shown on Eurosport; not sure about the extent of the coverage.

We're off and Tara Jamieson get a SB or is a PB in the 3000 SC but finishes at the tail of the field. Tara is one of the athletes who this is a learning experience for.

Gregan next up, really looking forward to see how he goes, progress well within his scope.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Oh yeaaahhhh, its business time - Grego through winning his heat in 47.32, 4th fastest qualifier out of the 5 heats so far, 2 more to come.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Colin Quirke slightly off the boil with his 17.28 for 17th in his pool.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Niamh Whelan 3rd in 11.96 but into a -1.9. Hopefully the other heats will have similar -ive wind otherwise she may not make fastest 8 losers as she is outside the automatic 2. 2nd heat has a -0.1 and she is 2nd fastest loser as of now.

I think she is outside the fastest 8 at this stage. Ah well, 200 to come for her.

Great stuff from Joan Healy - 12.05. Fails to progress but 0.01 of her PB into a -1.6 headwind, thats sub 12 running. Shows she has the mental edge needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Rineanna

Unfortunately, Niamh Whelan didn't get one of the fastest loser spots. A great pity for her, but she's still got two more events to go with the 200m and the relay.

Great running by Gregan; that'll do wonders for his confidence.

I think Ciara Everard will get through in the 800 if she PB's and a 1.83 will do for Pamela Hughes, 3cm is a big ask but who knows.

A dissapointing showing from Everard in the 800m, three seconds outside her recent PB with 2.09.85 and out of the qualifying positions.

Even at that she was withing half a second of making it through - good opportunity missed !

Such a shame, surprised she wasn't up there in a slow run race. She is a classy athlete though and has a bright future ahead of her.

I'd say 1.81 might do it, the other pool is developing pretty much the same as hers.

Its looking good, she is top 12 with 1.78 at the moment, unless some of the girls come through on their 3rd attempt we could have a high jump finalist!!

I think Pamela could be in, this is great stuff!!!!

    2 328 Pétros Kiriakídis GRE 46.57 46.57
    3 658 Vladimir Krasnov RUS 46.55 46.55
    4 368 Brian Gregan IRL 46.70 46.70
    5 446 Silvester Kirwa Meli KEN 47.34 46.84
    6 304 Niklas Zender GER 46.18 46.18

    8 469 Ismail M.H Al-Sabani KSA 46.33 46.33
    9 751 Zwede Hewitt TRI 46.63 46.04

On season's best Gregan is 6th fastest but who knows as the 2nd fastest SB is 46.33 from the KSA athlete. An Irish junior record will probably be required for a final slot.

A new PB for Kalyn Sheehan (59.88) was just 0.05 short of qualifying for the semis while Jessie Barr ran 60 dead. Both out but again, positive, running PB's or close to PB's on the biggest stage. Euro U23 next season.

Wozers.... Brian Gregan through to the 400m final in 46.88secs - 2nd in his semi final (only 1 tenth behind the winner)

Class performance considering he was in the quickest heat (Gregan 6th fastest on paper before race)

Can't wait to see the race !!!

Hurrah! Delighted for her; it must have been soul destroying to have been knocked out of her favoured event in the first round. The conditions were a tad more conducive to good times this time around, relative to the other heats.

Yeah, and thats the way it should be (I presume the Juniors was touted as a trial). Its just Lynch is probably kicking himself that he didn't move up the previous week, he'd be on the plane in the first place if he did!! Another guy to add to the mix in years to come maybe.

Don't forget the T.V coverage starts in a few minutes at 4.30 on Eurosport until 5, then 15 minutes of soccer and back to an hour of athletics...which makes no sense to me, but given the paltry coverage of athletics on T.V this summer, I'm just happy they're showing any!

Pamela Hughes might be shown as her final is kicking off around now, aswell as Gregan's final. I'm afraid he got a poor lane draw in lane 9, but if he keeps his head then anything is possible.

I'm not sure if Gregan on outside is good or bad. He starts so slow anyway but maybe in lane 9 he'll be gripped by the 'fear of the front-runner' and get out harder than normal. If he is close at 300 (say top 5) he is in with a shout but needs to be in contention when we get to business time.

Pamela is out having failed at 1.78.

Fifth for Gregan! Came storming through in the last 100m and nearly caught the Australian for 4th.

    46.60.....new NJR!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Brilliant stuff. If he can get his 200m time down to low 21's, he'll be on Gillick's heels in a couple of seasons.

Was he slow out of the blocks as expected?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Rineanna

Crap...he's been disqualified. I thought he was runninig very close to the line, allright. Balls anyway; why won't anything go our fecking way for once.

As for the race itself, he did go out relatively conservatively, but picked up the pace soon after. Came into the final 100 in 7th place, but blasted his way past two of the athletes.

The curse of the one lap juniors. Joanne Cuddihy was DQ'ed in the European Juniors Final I think and also Tomas Coman made the World Junior final and got injured and couldn't race.

Ciara Mageean 4th in heat with 4:21.73 (PB)
She qualified in a fastest loser spot.
Not bad for a 16yr old.
