My parents gave me rum to settle my stomach growing up and boiled red lemonade for colds.
7up is good at restoring the balance of your electrolytes.

Well mine would just stir or shake the fizz out of it. But yeah. :)

Yep, used to love the stuff (must try it again some day). It always worked wonders for me when I had a sore tummy, it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be a cure for cancer. I'm actually surprised by the amount of people who've never had it or heard of it.

It does, but the pharmaceutical companies don't want you to know.

(Now their black helicopters are going to hunt you down).

    Yeah, why is that?!

    Flat 7up cured my appendicitis.

flat 7 up is the same as boiled 7 up isn't it?
My parents gave me flat cream soda once when I was sick and I haven't been able to touch it since.

We had a special 7 up defizzer*

    * a honey taker outer of jar thingy. What are they called anyway? The swivelly plastic things, the honey gets trapped in the layers and then you turn it sideways to dispense but it doesn't quite work like that and gets everywhere anyway and you may as well have just used a spoon.

My mum used to put sugar in 7up to make it go flat when i was sick!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,148 ✭✭✭✭KnifeWRENCH

If I needed to be sick, but nothing was coming up, my Mam always gave me regular fizzy 7UP, and it made me sick a lot after.

Then, to help me feel better afterwards - more 7Up.

It helps you be throw up when you need to, and it helps you recover. Incredible stuff! :D Everytime one of us is unwell - be it colds/sore thorats/anything else - there's always 7Up around to get us through it! :)

    Never had it boiled though.

Had to have boiled 7Up while recoveing from weird flu-type thing, but added orange juice. Couldn't drink normal OJ for years after, wanted that lovely sweet taste.

    Several times.

It was just as disgusting each time.

I think it was a way to get sugar into you when you were recovering from an illness.

I still don't get why they give it for stomach bugs...
Maybe its just the way I'm thinking about it but Sugar & Bacteria = No No.
    So I always wondered..

We always had flat 7up in our house too for everytime any1 was sick miracle stuff!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

    Why flat?
Surely fizzy drinks would settle your stomach better?

Whenever I'm hungover, I knock back a can of coke and my stomach feels much much better.

Not quite boiling, but warm, flat 7up did cure all.

Plus the other option for me was usually some absolutely vile medicine that I can still taste - Augmentin or something.

7up is heavenly stuff alright. Flat 7up is my cure for hangovers. The sugar helps my poor body recover.

I will only drink 7up if it's flat. :) The best trick to getting the fizz out of 7up is to whisk it up with a fork. It de-fizzes the bejaysus out of it. Lovely, lovely flat 7up to enjoy after that.

    A.

Gotta wonder where it came from and why its so popular for sick people.
In my family we never really drank 7Up normally so if you came home and there was a bottle around you would know someones not well.

Funny to see this now as i only gave my little un this last night he is unwell.

My family doc who recently retired swore on coke for the runs. Even for a 1 yr old.

I drink about 4 cans a day am fupping addicted but i cant stand 7up .

Does sprite work as well, or is it only 7up?

Sprite is for the nouveau gauche ... 7Up for the traditionalists

Hardcore Dub-a-linn mammies like ma trout used to add salt to the 7Up, for extra miracle cure.

Bf was dying of a hangover today so gave him flat L & P (a NZ drink - lemon and paeroa). It;s like lemonade but nicer and that worked great for him. I guess it must tbe the lemon flavour and sweetness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,229 ✭✭✭gloobag

My granny used to turn the bottle upside down and stand the bottle on the fireplace next to a roaring fire for a couple of hours whenever I was sick.

This apparently turns the 7up into some magical elixir, and makes the bottle easier to open, according to her :D

Yeah , the flat 7 up is good for freeing babys wind and handy for colic to .Flat coke is also handy for stomache upsets .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,094 ✭✭✭✭javaboy

Mods can you delete this thread please? Every Irish mother knows flat 7 up is a one size fits cure for all known ills and ailments.... but if the lads at C&C (too lazy to find out if this is where 7 up is made) find out about its effectiveness as a panacea, they'll hike the price up and you'll only be able to buy it in Boots for €5 a litre (still cheaper than Ryanair but with no bj).

Some things should be kept to word of mouth.

Doctors do actually recommend it..was very surprised when my doc did. I thought it was a cure-all thought up by parents!

I always used to get a duvet on the sofa and hot orange (later found out it was lemsip or somehting similar)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,862 ✭✭✭✭January

It was never in my house unless someone was sick, but the sick person rarely got to drink it, because the non sick people drank it before it got flat!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11 sure sure

yep a wonder cure alright.. its up there with sudocream(cures all external ailments) and a small glass of milk ( heart-burn).
