    Hi Guys,

Just a quick one... is there such a question?

Anywho, is it true to say that Cardio work out = Fat loss and Weights = Muscle gain?

I ask cause I've a spare tyre to loose, my stomach and a small bit of muffin top, or whatever the male version is of that.
I'm doing really well with the weights bit but I can't seem to shift the fat bits. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I have a great diet, a whey shake with fruit and oats for brekky, steamed chicken breast for lunch and some fish and veg for dinner.
That's not all I eat mind you but it's a good sample. What ya think?

I think you should use the search function.

I think something doesn't add up.

Fat loss = using more calories than you consume. So either drop your calories, or up your activity levels. Taking it too far tho will result in no progress because your body's survival instinct will kick in.

Is that ACTUALLY all you eat during the day? No sneaky snacks? Sugar with your tea or coffee perhaps...??

    what weight are you?

    Thanks for the reply Hanley,

For the last 4 weeks I've been eating like this. I don't take sugar in anything. I do have the odd steak or a pizza on a treat night but I don't go mad.

    I'm 98kg or 15 1/2 stone ish.

I think I'll start a bit of running. I'm not doing enough cardio workout.

6ft 1in. I've never really worked the stomach muscles before now so they are flabby. The thing is I don't want to build them up too much until the fat is gone, otherwise I'll look fatter :)

If you build up enough muscle to look notably chubbier you wont have a spare tyre any more unless your diet is really poor. Muscle building is very slow, and takes a lot of work, but its the best (imo) alround method for weight los because by having more muscle you burn more calories simply by existing.

And you cant spot reduce fat, no amount of sit ups* will remove a belly unless you have the diet to back it up. If you work on muscle gain the fat will take care of itself as long as your eating right.

    *within reason

Well think of it this way, if you're 90kg now and 25% bodyfat (just random numbers), you'll have about 22kg of fat and 68kg of muscle. Now if you added 5 or 6kg of muscle and didn't add any extra bodyfat then you'll be around 96kg with that same 22kg of fat, BUT as a percentage of your overall mass, your bodyfat will have gone down to around 22%.

Lower bodyfat% generally means you look better. So by adding muscle and not losing any fat you'll have decreased your bodyfat%, and you'll look better. You'll have an easier time losing fat after that because you'll have a higher resting metabolic rate due to the increased muscle.

I've noticed that theres a lot of varibles in this weight loss stuff. I was running this morning, I kept my heart rate up to 165bpm. That should be burning fat, and it was before breakfast.

I have a protein shake with some fruits for breakfast when I got back. I feel great. Down to the gym tonight for some weight training.

Hopefully I'll see some results in a couple of weeks.

this ain't my forté (i'm a cyclist) but i'm working under the impression that @165bpm you're working too hard too be burning much fat - you're using glycogen in your muscles and liver. you are burning alot of calories alright, but not fat. fat burnings zone is lower right? maybe +- 130bpm ish?

correct me if i'm wrong experts, as i'm trying to get leaner myself at the moment.

as a side question to this post (sorry op) do you guys think it's possible to lose body fat without losing weight - i.e. stay around the same weight while building muscle and burning fat simultaneously, or is it one or the other?

It is possible, I have been around 12 stone for ages doing exactly that.
