    1. Has to be an Irish

    2. That I don't have one already .

    Middleton very rare.
    Jameson 12 Yr old.

I've never tried the Midleton, but if I had the money and had decided to devote it to Whiskey I'd buy one of those.

    Cheers Shinobi

    Have a few of the Midleton very rare a 1996 and a 2000 - probably will get a 2007

Have the Jameson 12yr - nice whiskey - more for daya to day drinking than keeping I'd say :)

How much are you willing to spend?

I'm not a whiskey drinker myself, but I have heard people up & down talking of some of the Older finer whiskies which would be worth collecting.
Also came across http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/C-320.aspx?order=pricehighlow The bushmills stuff I've heard of but there are some other whiskies here that I have never heard of.

    Connemara 12 year is excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 883 ✭✭✭Brockagh

Connemara 12 is good, alright, but it's way over-priced, compared to scotch whisky of similar age. However, you can get Cadenhead bottlings of Cooley whiskey that's brilliant and better value.

The Bushmills 1975 Millennium edition is worth getting. It's about 200 euro in the Celtic Whiskey Shop. Jameson 18 is also good.

Or of you really want to splash out, Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve is brilliant, but it's 400 euro.

Cooley Distillery have just won a record 9 awards at the IWSC. You could maybe try the 15yr Kilbeggan. The 8yr Greenore either if you can find it.

I can't get into the peated Whiskeys at all.

Probably up to 200 - above that I'd have a problem parting with the cash !

The Bushmills could be a runner !

It's the nicest Bushmills I've ever had by a long way, the 1975 Millennium, that is.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 575 ✭✭✭Dabko

Get up to the bushmills factory in the north, pick up a bottle of their 12year old. Supposedly the only place you can get this single malt is in bushmills:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭shanel23

I've been planning a trip up to Bushmills for the past number of years but something always comes up and I've kept putting it off :( . I intend to get there this year - epecially as it's their 400th year !

I love visting distilleries - So far I've in Ireland I've go to Midleton , Lockes , Smithfield and Cooley - got to get to Bushmills !

I've heard that Green Spot is really good.
    Inexpensive too.
I must pick up a bottle one of the days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭shanel23

Green spot is great stuff - the best price I've seen is 39.99 - in the celtic whiskey shop

Well, it's very nice, but it is just a 10-year-old pure pot still whiskey. You can get a 12-year-old pure pot still whiskey (Redbreast 12) for 1/6th the price.

Much better than that is the Redbreast 15, which is available in the Celtic Whiskey Shop and Redmonds in Ranelagh.

...although for collecting, the Greenspot 10 might be worthwhile.

I'm hoping so - if you look at some of the older whiskies for sale on specialist websites - some of the prices are going through the roof - not that I'm collecting them for monetary gain but it's nice to know that some whiskies appreciate better than gold !

A whiskey writer that I know told me that he reckons a bottle is only good for about 3 years once it's opened. After that it's loosing flavour and aroma.
Also read online that Top end Tequila deteriorates after about 3 months!

    What do whiskey collectors think?

Honestly never had an opened bottle of whiskey last for three months never mind 3 years.. :) as long as the bottles are kept sealed they are as good as when they were bottled ( or as bad ! )

I would imagine that a bottle of whiskey that had been opened and kept on the shelf would suffer from evaporation which would effect the flavour.

No, I don't think so. Most say that it deteriorates very very slowly. If the bottle is pretty full, it will last years and years. Even then, it does not necessarily deteriorate, but just change.

The 8yr Greenore either if you can find it.

A limited run of 5000 bottles of 15yr Greenore is out now too, might be worth grabbing one.

Jameson 18yo or Gold Reserve I think it is.

    Midleton VR is gorgeous.

Where are you getting that price? It's 70.95 here in the airport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 883 ✭✭✭Brockagh

That's a crazy price for a grain whiskey. Should be about 30 to 40 euro, considering it's a limited edition.

I think it was the the celticwhiskey shop - if it's cheaper at the airport I'll wait till I go somewhere and get one then :)

It is a 15 yr old all the same.. But agreed it's a bit on the pricey side . Mind you it's probably Cooley cashing in on all the medals they are winning . More medals = higher the price they can charge.

Yeah, but there are hundreds of medals given out at these whisky fairs. Just about everything that is entered gets some kind of medal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭shanel23

True I suppose - man I'd love to be a judge at one of those fairs !

Currently enjoying a nice drop of Green spot - It deserves several gold medals !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭shanel23

Well was down in Midleton over the weekend and popped into the distillery shop and added a 2007 very rare to the collection . To be honest I was a bit disappointed with the selections available in the store. Also they've rebranded their distillery reserve - only available in the shop to a green labelled bottle . Did'nt bother with it as have one of the older branded ones already. They also had a new Jameson premium 18yr old in a green plastic box at 125 - maybe next time :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,389 ✭✭✭cianclarke

I think green spot is next on my list, having tried redbreast and been *blown away* by it... Miles better than the Jameson 12. Not really able to spend any more than 50 myself though!

I'll also add my support to Greenspot.

    Fantastic whiskey.

They have bottle behind the bar at The Palace on fleet street... try a measure and you'll soon be buying a bottle for yourself.

There's a bottle of DWD behind the bar in the glass case in the Palace? Is that the real thing, or is it filled with tea, for display purposes?

You would have been better off buying a bottle of Lockes 8 year old single malt, as they're the same thing. And the Lockes is much cheaper.

Eh? How did you get from Green Spot to DWD?

Green Spot is my whiskey of choice too, FWIW. Very different to Redbreast, which I don't really like.

True - most of what the Cooley distillery produce is branded and marketed in different ways . I do really like the Michael Collins bottles - very unusual shape - even if the 1L blend is so tall that it does'nt fit on my display shelf where the other whiskeys are :)

for sure Greenspot is my favourite drinking whiskey ans I've certainly put some dents in the bottle in the Palace

I like Green Spot, but I don't think it's as nice as it used to be.

I'd recommend Redbreast 15 y.o. if you can find a bottle somewhere, it's excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Are you drinking these or colleting them?
I got my Middleton before Christmas. It was on special at Tesco and i think it was about €115 plus i got it when there was 30% back in clubcard points on alcohol :D

Lovely stuff. I have only had it a few times. I currently have a normal bushmills to drink on a regular basis along with a tyrconnell, connemara and some fantastic Yamazaki Japanese Whiskey.

Collecting mainly - but have been known to break into one of the "collection" the odd time :D

talking of irish whiskeys, has anyone tried that "feckin irish whiskey"?

I saw it online a while back but never had the chance to try it, is it any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 883 ✭✭✭Brockagh

I don't think it's supposed to be great. It's just a cheap whiskey from Cooley, I believe. Bottled by someone else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭shanel23

I think it's marketed at the American market too - as Brockagh said it's a Cooley product so probably the same as Kilbeggin or Lockes.

    Digging up this old thread...

I'm going to head into either Ranelagh into Redmonds or into the Celtic Whiskey Shop to buy myself a Redbreast 15 year old.

Celticwhiskeychaser mentioned to me that it might be cheaper in Redmonds... anyone got any information on this.

When buying it I might head into the Bull & Castle to have a few chasers of the 15 year old itself. I remember reading a thread saying that someone got some out of a 1970's bottle I think it was and got it for a very cheap price... I could be wrong though.

I'm also looking at the Midleton Very Rare 2007 at 150 euro. Might be my next buy after the Redbreast.

I think that particular bottle is the 12yo version. Just remember that it is quite different and not a true reflection on in what it is today. Definately worth a try if it is cheap though.

I just remember a post either here or on our own site saying it was cheaper but that was a while back but yes now that you mention it it was Redmons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 883 ✭✭✭Brockagh

Yes, I think it was me who gave that info. It was the case a month or so ago anyway. It was 90 euro in Ranelagh

I think Midleton VR is overpriced, personally. And I think Jameson 18 is better, but that's just my own taste. The Midleton is still very good.

I also think I'd prefer the Jameson Gold to the Midleton, and it's a good bit cheaper.

I've seen Midleton VR for 135 in the local Supervalue -

I got a bottle ( the 2008 ) at Heathrow a week or so ago for 92 Euro . It is overpriced here for what it is - but still a cracking whiskey
