I didn't realise, but from reading the Wicklow 200 thread, it looks like lots of people here are computer nerds !

    Is this the case ?

I am a raging computer nerd, doing research in network security. What does everyone else do ?

(idle off topic question for the day)

Watch out for his story of shrapnel in the knee. Anyway ! Back on topic for all the non travel software people !

Software too. Currently embedded, moving to a startup doing more application level stuff in 3 weeks.

Mostly accounts. Hate it. Also: typing the € symbol for people, resizing cell boxes, doing mail merges and any other stuff that people who get paid four times more than me are unable to do in Microsoft Office. I understand the mysteries of Vista, oooooooh!

    Yeah, I'm bitter.

I'm the übernerd at a tech startup. C# has been my thing for the last four years but I would have been C++ on Win32 for years prior to that.

I'm a bit of nerd too - IT support/systems management etc.

It's funny. If asked a few years ago what my hobby was, it would have been computers. Now, it's cycling. You never lose touch with your inner nerd though - he's always there trying to figure out how things work.

Build guy for GNOME team at a place in East Point.
I have 16 points on GNOME's bugzilla. It seems to be a decent number, though completely irrelevant.

Ah, so you're a build guy...I guess that explains the 'gratuitous Perl'. My build guy from the last place would have used Python :)

Long time career gypsy, I found my inner geek and put him in charge. ;)

In-house press officer, I spend most of my day hunched over the laptop looking like this - - Hence the need to ride a bike...

    Great job though, love it.

Interesting. Im a Internal Fraud Analyst (in a telecoms company). And a physio therapist in training. 2 and a bit years left to do in that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,201 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

Another nerd. Or at least I used to be. Used to be a Software Engineer (contractor and then later with a large multinational). Now manager of a software division of a fairly large multinational.

Boring eh ? Still at least it pays for fancy wheels, carbon bits and pieces and boards.ie jerseys. If only they'd leave me alone long enough for me to train enough to migrate beyond mere survival with the odd flash or result, to being actually good on a bike !

I'm wondering now if we've ever spoken to eachother in the course of our professional duties. Been a while since I've spoken to a union though.

Well, at least with all the software/IT people, the interesting thing is that I suspect most of us know people that we all work with, or may even have worked with each other at some point. It's a small industry in Ireland !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Explosive_Cornflake

I'm a Network Engineer, for eh, we'll call it "Security" on mobile networks. Loads of travel, too much, so I'm in ****e countries most of the year missing my bikes. Hopefully change job soon and devote a lot more time to cycling.

Work as a Health and Safety officer for a company in north midlands. Only ten minutes from home but I get to travel around the country to different locations which is good.

Can I say - this is an interesting thread, good to get some idea what people do for a living as names are now familiar even though I haven't met most of ye.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,942 ✭✭✭Danbo!

3D modeling/animating/visualization in an architectural practice.... but of course, keeping with the thread I also take care of IT within the company!

Also might explain why some of us are so active during the day, whereas others are more nocturnal.

    Student welfare officer...

I probably spend more time training than I do actually working*.

*By working I mean not surfing the internet to pass the time!

I'm an environmental science student in N. U. I. Galway.

I'm another one with a somewhat Ironic job. I'm in logistics, office manager in a recovery company. I spend my day saving motorists :o I do have the power to make SUV drivers wait all day for assistance though :pac:

Engineer. As in, infrastructure, roads etc. Still aiming to move to the structural field sooner or later.

I too am a bit of a nerd. I like to build the odd computer from time to time. I'm a mechanical engineering graduate, doing a research masters in bioengineering which has seen me use a bit of Tcl and VTK over the last 2 years.

I want to move back to the regular cycling threads, this one upsets me...

    There's a pattern here. :(

Also a nerd currently doing a degree in building services engineering although I not one of you filthy roadies. I ride a manly bike, on manly terrain.
