Many commentators have stated that if present economic conditions maintain their course it's likely we'll see a return to the 80s. This can only be a good thing.

    Rambo movies = good

    Legwarmers = good

Unemployment = more time with the family/more time to watch classic 80s cartoons such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or the one where it's The Three Musketeers only they're all played by cartoon dogs ("Ruff ruff ruff, one for all and all for one")

    Rocky III = good

    Wham! = good

To all the people at Hibernian who are mourning the loss of their jobs, I say: do not shed a single tear, you may be steeped in debt with no prospects but emigration and the Dole queue, but Dempsey's Den will be back on the air soon.

    Hooray for the 80s!

Another advantage is that we'll be able to go on the dole and stay on it, without getting accused of being lazy. People will look at you sympathetically and wish you luck in your impossible jobseeking quest. Whereas during the Celtic Tiger years, if you weren't working, you were automatically presumed to be a sponging waster.

DJ Kat will once again rule the world of television.

Important question though, will this classify as time travel? Because if I'm going to meet myself aged 9 in the 80's, I'd like to put on a tie and look decent. May as well give myself something to aspire to when I grow up.

Even better than that - since nobody will have any work to go to, the roads will be completely clear at 'rush hour'.

Rust on cars, orange buses, white dogshit, Live at Three... I can't wait until the recession starts to hit really hard.

Alice Glenn and Oliver J. Flanagan in the Dail, Charles Haughey like Napoleon with Bertie "Five O'Clock Shadow" Ahern at his side, the Labour party Beardiestas. The price for returning to the eighties could be far higher than some here understand.

Hooray for a return to the days before divorce was legal.

No divorce = No divorce rate = Highest marriage success in the world. Sorted.

Also, I miss seeing St. Bridget on my cash.

EDIT: Just found out it was Catherine McAuley on my £5 notes, not the other one. My childhood is ruined! **** the 80s.

When the only 4x4's on the Irish roads were either the Landrover or a Toyota FJ40 and these were owned by farmers or those in the trade and not by housewives living in south Dublin.

Don't touch your younger self, not only will it make you a peado but it may make the universe explode.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,561 ✭✭✭Umaro

Yes everyone. Be extremely wary of any interaction with the younger 80s version of yourself as it may severely alter the time-space continuum.

One small slip-up could mean any number of impossible sci-fi scenarios could arise, for example.. a future Ireland could be part of dystopian Euro-state, where orders are handed down to us from tight-lipped Frenchmen in sharp suits. We wouldn't want that.

Also, don't ride your own mother. No matter how attractive she is in the 80s.

And in the 80s the dole was ~30 to 40 pounds a week. and there were no 10 and 12 pound rises back then, you might get an extra pound every year.

Although, I did notice the ulster bank have resurrected henry hippo, which can't be good when histry repeats like that.

If we go back to the eighties i may reconsider my emigration and stay in ireland, then i could look ahead and see which cushy job i was going to apply for, while waiting for celtic tiger to arrive at my doorstep ;)

lets all burn Coal too, and wear knitted jumpers and hopefully this recession thing will bring us some decent snow also. I think it will put a more human face to Ireland, instead of some lunatic builder doing 90mph on a backroad at 6.30 in the morning in a Hyundai Santa Fe with the ubiquitous Spears of Death 4 be 2 pointing out the back door and held with baling twine. I for one will not miss those yellow reflective vests that became a stable of every Irish mans wardrobes alongside, steel toe cap boots caked in cement and a hard hat.

Recession FTW*! Thank you Alan Greenspan

Soda Stream, Tayto crisps. Palestinian scarves.

On the up side it might bring a bit of reality back to the Irish, on the down side anyone that owns loads of property is possibly fuked, but they were greedy anyway.
