    Choose your own hours
    Cash in hand

if you've some form of arts Degree what ever made you think you'd be qualified to have a job in the first place?

arts Degrees are a useful way of screenin dossers out of the WORKforce

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,503 ✭✭✭thefinalstage

If its an arts degree go back for another year and become a teacher.

How exactly are you failing to get a job?

Are you not getting interviews? If so, look at your cv...criminal record letting you down?

are you being turned down after an interview? if so, photos of your attire of gtfo.

    help us to help you.

What do they normally do for you ? Let you swipe your credit card down the crack of their arse before dumping out a receipt ?

For someone with a University Degree your spelling, punctuation and grammar leave a lot to be desired. Maybe address this issue first and you'll have more success on the job front?

isn't that the norm these days?

having said that prostitution is legal and taxed where i am living.

still, i'd expect something a bit more wild than cash in hand.

i wouldnt mind a job, although being a mum thats pretty much a full time job in its-self,without being paid!! my down fall is that any interveiws i go for i dont get,and im suspicious that its because of having too many tattoos,it is usually blatantly obvious, although i do try to cover them up,some are still on show that you cant hide.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 156 ✭✭reregholdsworth

would that not lead you to consider having them removed?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 207 ✭✭*melanie*

no,i wouldnt remove them, they are part of me now and i love them, plus i can only imagine the pain!!!they say its way more painful to get them removed than put on.its just a fickle world that you cant get a job cos you have a tattoo,oh well, maybe someday!

See I've tried to explain that concept to pigheaded 16 year olds before Melanie.

    but always to no avail,

still it would depend on what sort of jub you are going for as to whether the tats should make a difference, if its anything to do with dealing with the public the tatoos are a no no.

if its an administrative position where the only people who will see them are your colleagues then its up to the interviewers discression,

bear in mind tho, if you are being judged against someone of equal qualifications and no tatoos, they will get the job 99% of the time

Which is probably why he's jobless.

Who are you going to want to hire, the person who applies for the job first thing in the morning or the person who isn't arsed getting out of bed until late in the afternoon?

Well if you've an arts degree then folks are unfortunately probably right that you might as well go be a teacher, otherwise your degree may have been a waste of time. Every person I know who did an arts degree ended up in jobs they could have gotten without it or in telemarketing (degree only helped due to a language component). Rather a shame really, they could've been out and earning for 3 years before they were and lost nothing really.:(

PS - FYI Alan, you can in fact put more than one person's quote in a single message, it won't cause the sky to fall or anything. :p

you can make the guts of 4 or 5 hundred a week in tesco, more again if you work night shift.

I think what the OP means is he can't get a job he likes. There are LOADS of crappy jobs all over the place, take what you can get

Unfortunately, to get started in a career, you need experience these days. Tesco isn't relevant for most jobs, so you need to get in at the bottom of something related. Of course, no-one seems to be offering any decent graduate jobs. I've seen jobs looking for graduates with 2 years commercial experience, and jobs offering 15k for 2 years experience. Chancers!

I disagree with all the people who advise recipients of Arts degrees to go and get a teaching qualification. I did that, and believe me, getting secondary teaching posts is NOT easy. There are not many permanent jobs, and it's very difficult to earn a steady income from substitute teaching. Despite that, secondary teaching is extremely difficult and not everybody is cut out for it as a career.

I was looking for a teaching job for almost a year after graduating with first class honours. Eventually I took a boring old office job because I wanted to get a mortgage and needed a steady income. After all that, I can't even see myself going back to teaching. The pay and holidays are fantastic, but what's the point being miserable for the other nine months of the year?

It's undoubtedly a boring old office job to which your degree has no relevance though, so your degree was a waste of time.

I never made any comment about the value of my degree. My post was about teaching. In answer to your question, no it was not a waste of time.
