Thought I get the ball rolling (pun intended) with this one.

Best course you've ever played. The highlight of the round and how well did you play etc..

Best course I've ever played has got to be St Andrews (The Old Course). Playing off 11 I shot 32 pts. Highlight of the round was making a 65 foot putt for birdie on the 3rd. (Sept 06)

I played the Palmer course (K Club) about 3 years ago. The course was so good it wasnt funny, sublime condition. I shot 74 with a holed out wedge for eagle on the last hole!

I don't have the money to play many of the better courses but the best I've played is Portrush. I don't remember what I scored but it wasn't good. However a great course.

Agreed. Played it in Sep '06 in gale force wind and lashing rain. Lost a few balls that day. Would love to play it again in calmer conditions.

    Mount Juliet a close second.

Played the Gary Player course in Sun City a couple of weeks before the Nedbank about 5 years ago. Unbelievable setting for a golf course. Although, I must say Tralee, Waterville or Ballybunion would hard to beat. If I was to pick one out of the three it would probably be Waterville.......or Tralee.......I just can't separate them!!!!!

Montecastilla, last year. Played off the back stakes 7100+ yards. 9 over gross in a stokes game, probably the best golf I have played in my life. 3 over gross on the back.

Though I'm not a great fan of many American courses, played both Sawgrass and Harbour Town a few years back and both are really stunning.

    Don't ask how the 17th went... :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,361 ✭✭✭f22

Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale or Harbour Town for me.

Closer to home, Portmarnock Old. It's just an amazing course that I enjoy even more every time I play it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Danow247

Old Portmarnock without a doubt the best course ive played.

Ive only ever played the smurfirt course in the k club, but i had 6 birdies on it so its always a course i rave about haha!
Playing the Palmer at the end of july, looking forward to that one.

    Dromolin Castle .....County Clare.....

Best was Torrey Pines - South Course. Played it the Xmas before last, very challenging (obviously).

    Most enjoyable - Mount Juliet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

Not played much until this year so the top of the list is The Castlemarytr Resort.

Hard to just pick one, I always look forward to playing Waterville,Tralee,Ballybunion and Killarney.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37 Da Golden Goose

    Its gotta be South County:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭kenco

Mad impressed with Ballyliffen years back.

Mt Juliet and PGA Johnstown top of the list with the new Dun Laoighaire close behind

Forgot the European, hell of course but when the winds blows virtually impossible for the mere mortals...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,543 ✭✭✭JerryHandbag

Playing the old course in Ballybunion in a few weeks for the first time since I was about 16 and was literally blown off the course. I dont expect this time round to be any different :D
The Monty course at Carton House was a monster I thought, never had so many long approach shots to par 4s

Old Head of Kinsale or Rosses Point. very different but both excellent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

I've played Fota & Mt Juliet, but I really like Cork Golf Club, its a real know-where-to-hit-it course, thinking mans course. I've still to play the 15th & 16th & 17th well, this is where my round falls apart :(
Also: has anyone got past Seve's drive (tree planted) on the 11th >>

Ya I know the island well, nearly joined 5 years ago but the atmosphere of the place ultimately put me off. great course alright but fota streets ahead in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

Yeah, Fota is nice, 27 holes, don't like the new 9 though, its always in fabulous nick. But I just like the challenge of Cork. I bet you didn't get into the Club house with your fone turned on and wearing a pair of jeans!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 169 ✭✭jimboddb

most places are like that but the cork gc takes it to a new level, loads of stupid rules e.g. full members must wear a blazer and tie in the club house during the winter etc. Great course but not sure bout 'the club'

Praia del rey, Peniche (near Lisbon)

Best supporting award - Esker Hills, Tullamore (just has something about it)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,169 ✭✭✭rednik

Without a doubt it has to be Waterville GC. I have played it a lot every summer for the last twenty years and I have never seen it in bad condition even when the work was going on to change the course. I have played St Andrews Old Course and while it is a great course it is more historic. Played another course in Scotland Ladybank GC which is an absolute gem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,886 ✭✭✭WHIP IT!

Skellig Bay in Waterville, Co Kerry - heading down there next week, yippee! :)

I have played Mt Julliet, Cork, The European, K-Club, Turnberry, Slieve Russell and many top Golf Courses but I would have to say Waterville is head and shoulders above anything else. It's like God smiled on that little headland.

I was lucky enough to be one of a small group, of about 50 people, who followed Tiger Woods, Mark O'Meara, Payne Stewart, Stuart Appleby, David Duval, and friends, play two six-man team scramble, of the back sticks, in July 1999.

Tiger's team, 15 under par for 18 holes.

David Duval's team, 17 under par for 18 holes.

To watch such players, on a recreational afternoon, on a magnificent golf course, was a pleasure and an honour.

Mount Juliet, 2 years ago, played most holes off the back stakes,...fabulous, just wished I had brought a putting stroke with me that day, talk about yips!

Esker Hills is the best value, true golfers course in Ireland.

I have a soft spot for Glasson, I think it's the lakes ;) but it's just a wonderful location-layout and quality.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 251 ✭✭Golferx

Just back from Glasson, open fourball.

Course in absolutley magnificent condition, greens fast as hell. Brilliant.

Today, the 14th tee, from up high, was like standing on the front of the Titanic, into a hell of a wind. Fantastic. What a driving hole today.

Adare Manor ......no course in Ireland even comes near it

Nice course alright, but you obviously don't travel around too much if you think nothing comes near it. Personally, it would barely make my top 10 but it's all about personal opinion.

Got to play the TPC in Scottsdale Arizona back in 2000 when I was working for intel and got sent there for training....

Was off 1.4 then and shout 81 on the stadium course playing well and then shot a bit lower on the champions course the day after

Both courses are in perfect condition and the whole facility which is HUGE looks a tad out of place in the desert

Agree with gramlab Praia del Rey is magnificant. Wonderful selection of holes, each unique with breathtaking views on the ocean holes. Great value too. A course you must play if you are in the Lisbon area.

In Ireland the best links course I've played is Ballybunion, parkland Mount Juliet and nine hole Boystown.

    1) Portmarknock (fair for handicap golfers)
    2) Tralee
    3) Ballyliffin (both)

Waterville is suppossed to be the best though.

    Sorry its gotta be Headford

In Ireland links courses Carne in north Mayo, Rosses Point and Enniscrone are the more famous but not as good in my opinion.

Parkland havent played too many of the big courses but I love Westport on a good day!

Abroad Aprohdite Hills in Cyprus was good and the best was Abama in Tenerife, every single hole was spectacular. Was worried what a low handicapper would think of Abama with its waterfalls and elevated tees, but two low single figure handicappers that I went with the second time waxed lyrical about it.

    Little Bit Harsh!

Personally, my favourite course in Ireland is Skellig Bay in Waterville. It's certainly not the best course in the country, but it's just my favourite.

To be fair, this thread was last posted in over 6 months ago so i wouldn't expect anyone to trawl through that amount of thread history to be sure they're not repeating a previous thread.

It's not as though there's a limited amount of space on here for threads. If it prompts discussion and gives people some useful info then job done. Certainly no need to get on your high horse Callaway 92.
