The nice people at Dublin Camera Club asked me to pass this information -

Guy Gowan is due to give a talk next Tuesday night at the Dublin Camera Club

Thought the guys on Boards.ie may like to know.

Details at www.dublincameraclub.ie under Current Program.

He is well worth the effort to go and see his image processing tutorials ... we hired him for a day session last year ... and it was very good ...

I'm not sure ... but I have just emailed and asked ... you can join the DCC for 6 months at €50 ... this may be the answer ...

Image processing with a Guy called Cowan.

    Now I'm definitely going.:D;):p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 194 ✭✭Deacon Blues

It'll probably that guy, Cowan looking for tips on how to photoshop referendum ballot papers, so he can get the result he wants.

In all seriousness though, this is worth a visit.

Was at the boards one last year. It was like, this is what I used do, and this isn't some kind of improvement, but a different mindset altogether.

i found it , but had to run in the end , the heat & stuffiness , and the person beside had rotten breath -- no one from here (i thinl :) ) -- while i think it is important to know about post processing , and i plan doing further learning , still not 100 % converted, in having to spend too long post processing , maybe its just not for me , I'm a London Calling man

    Hi all,

I forgot I had actually registered here ages ago, so asked Simon to pass on the invitation to the talk. Hope those that came to the club tonight enjoyed the evening & got something out of it. The "Cowen" in the program was a typo. We were to have our annual auction on this evening, but at the last minute Guy was "possibly" available & so there was a quick rearrangment.

Keep an eye on the program as we do have a lot of good talks on at the Tuesday meetings. The Auction that was supposed to be on is a great place to pick bargain or get rid of some of that unused gear.

I must say it was even better than I had expected.
Exactly what I wanted to hear and see - How to create pictures without spending a lot of time with post processing.
I would call it "holistic" attempt to processing. Why to create something if it is already in the image? :-)
Thanks to Camera Club for such opportunity. And thanks for patience of people around me.

I went with a guy from work, we were standing right behind you lot so!
I really thought it was excellent. In particular how he uses contrast so that the colours don't change & you don't lose detail/light, brilliant! I bought the mono DVD so going to look at it at lunch time.
Yep many thanks to the camera club! Hope to join up soon. :)

You were all very welcome & the crowd there was a bit higher than our normal meetings. We usually have all the chairs filled & maybe one or two standing at the rear. So there were a fair few visitors there. Unfortunately, with a lbig crowd, the room can get quite stuffy & warm.

The club does allow people to attend a meeting or two as visitors, so this was probably a good night to take advantage of that. Those of you who would like to join up would be most welcome. It is a very good club & quite active. There are many good photographers there who are more than willing to share their knowledge & experience with others. Those who only attended last night for the first time may not realise that the building has 3 levels, with two darkrooms, a library, meeting room & coffee dock as well as a fully equiped studio.

If you are interested in joining us then come on a Tuesday night. Membership is €90 a year plus a €5 joining fee. We will not be there next Tuesday (July 1st) as it will be the opening of our Annual Exhibition, Photo 2008, at the Library in Pearse Street. If you have a few moments the maybe drop into the Library & have a look at some of the work of the members of the club. There is work there from Advanced, Intermediate & Novice level members.

The whole point of Guys technique for professional photographers is that you don't spend a lot of time processing ... or you could just get Lightroom ... Since I started using it I barely use CS3 ... only using it for things like local contrast work and making panoramic shots ...

I have to totally agree here. I find I seldom use CS3. Lightroom now does over 95% of my processing.

I'm looking forward to Lightroom 2.0 to probably then make Lightroom do 99% of my processing.

i'm probably a slow learner , and i didn't buy the dvd , but i far from mastered his technique in an hour . He certainly knows his stuff, but to fully understand his technique , you would need a good understanding of ps , IMO. On the computer screen, some of my recent pics with an increased sharpening look a little unnatural to my eyes , maybe they'll be ok in print . Horses for courses.

You won't master his techniques in an hour or anything like it, unless you are a pretty good PS user. It will take much longer than that but is really worth it for ongoing time savings after that.

Regarding sharpening what he said (at the one day we had in DCU ) was the 500% was for printing only and for web display etc would be much lower (maybe 200%). Also remember that he sharpens selectively (ie the trees and not the sky) which makes a huge difference.

What I use after trial and error is 125% on the full size image and a further 125% on the reduced file size at the very end. Rarely have to amend that.

Stick with it Barry, it's worth it, from someone who hasn't quite got there yet.

    T.
