Some posts are showing "Posted via Mobile Device". Is this driven by them using the mobile skin or something else? Is it letting people know more than they should be entitled to?

I think CuLT said something about it having to be shown for some reason. I think a very small mobile phone icon somewhere in the post would be a bit less obtrusive.

Sure you can edit it or delete it completely when you're posting from your phone. It comes up by default but you can get rid of it if you want. Your sig still won't be shown though.

It's editable and removable if you wish.

Sure, I'll know he used a mobile device to send it, but it won't tell me anything worth knowing.

Will find a neater way to signify a post is a mobile post. Mostly it's just to raise initial awareness.

    Why is it necessary?

Is it a legal requirement or something?

    Awareness of what?

What consequence is it to me if someone posted via a mobile device?

I don't care if someone is posting from Mars tbh.

Why don't my posts say "posted via Green Skin"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

It makes you aware that you can post via a mobile device.

The new mobile version of boards really does work very well so it needs to be promoted as it was always tricky to access from a phone before.

I heard that some guy once posted from a mobile device but didn't say he had posted from a mobile device and the police killed his dog as punishment. And if he did it again they said they'd come back and smother his ocelot.

I always wondered what would happen if someone was using a mobile device to control a stationary device (i.e. an internet tablet VNCing onto a pc that is accessing m.boards.ie). It could get a bit complicated.

It's there so people will be able to tell whether Jigsaw is out on is mountain bike (and therefore targetting someone) or at a stationary computer. Of course, it's possible he could be hi-jacking wireless networks, but there's no way of telling.

Regardless, it means people can turn the lock on the doors/windows when they see him posting via mobile device. I think it'll save a lot of people tbh.

Pen and paper and then scanned it in?
Or did you break into boards HQ, rip apart a server and take a biro to the thread directly?

I pushed the keys on my keyboard with a bic.

I dont find it intrusive at all. I agree with CuLT on having it there for the moment to raise awareness and get more people moving away from the Mobile Skin to the Mobile Edition of the site. Then, more people can give feedback and report bugs so CuLT can fix them and make the service even better.

and i was that person *sobs softly while stroking dead dog.* the only downside bout posting from a phone is the character
limit-although i imagine newer phones allow bigger posts(?)

Maybe replace it with a small image of a mobile that links to the m.boards thread?

But that would be cheating. right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,138 ✭✭✭takola

Why change it? I think it's unnecessary to change it. It gets the point across fairly well.

Although the idea to have a link to mboards thread is a good idea.

Can't believe some people are whinging about seeing 4 words at the end of the odd post ffs!

I think it is a good idea to promote the mobile version and raise awareness.

I actually use the mobile version quite a lot and I must say it is a vast improvement over the mobile skin.

OK, I was thinking it was someone put in by VB that the poster couldn't control.

Some people might be using boards when they shouldn't be or people shouldn't know about that extra mobile phone someone has.

Seriously though. If you don't like it you can delete it like i just have. Victor you're bloody pedantic sometimes i tells ye. Its not boards.ie's problem if someone is doing secret stuff. Its like saying browsers shouldn't have a history function.

It's mainly to highlight the m.boards.ie thingey. You could access m.boards.ie on your laptop or desktop and it would still post the "Posted via mobile device".
