Does anybody know of a good gym in the Fingal area?I'm seventeen and finished school this year.I play rugby and was in good shape through the year but during the exams my diet went to sh!t an I went from 10 and a half stone to 12 in about two months.

I was thinking about doing the Starting Strength programme but I have don't know how to squat or deadlift and don't want to risk doing it without proper form and doing damage.I live in Rush and I don't know of any good gyms around the area that I can learn and perform these lifts.

    Can anybody help?
    Thanks

Image in Swords is excellent for actual weight training, the people there know what they are doing and will really help you. They have different ways of paying, so it's not too expensive. The one big drawback is that the showers are really horrible. You'd be much better working out there, and showering when you get home.

Jackie Skelly is very expensive and you can forget about squatting and deadlifts, they don't even have any proper barballs, just a smith machine (which is notorious for wrecking backs), and some heavy dumbbells.

thanks Crotalus,i had a look in the one in rush and it looked okay but i haven't heard anything about it.it is the closest to me so it might be the best bet.what are the staff like though? would they help me learn those lifts or would i have to just go it alone?

thanks EileenG i was looking at image aswell, it looks like a good gym seems to be a lot of bodybuilding goes on too.

    They've got a website www.imagegym.com

It's the only gym I know where the staff will always spot you if necessary. I asked about spotting in Jackie Skelleys, and I swear, they looked at me blankly, they didn't know what I was asking.

If you are already experienced in body building, then you will appreciate the range of free weight equipment we provide. Dead lifting & squating, to name a few, can be performed effectively with our equipment.

    Nice.

It's not often you'll see that on a gym's website!!

The guy you will mainly see is called John he’s the owner and a nice chap his wife is normally there for short periods in the afternoon / Sunday morning again nice lady but for info you want to talk to John , there is a new girl starting Im not sure what her name is but I have been told she is a nice enough girl (local girl I think)

John will do up a program for you when you start just let him know what lifts you want to include , I have not seen him teach the dead lift but he know’s how to do it , starting off he will more than likely give you a complete body work out as apposed to a split routine , this really is the best option for you starting off, he reassess you after 6 weeks (if you ask him to) and changes up the routine, johns a fitness instructor not a bodybuilder/power lifter so after about the 3rd or 4th you will probably be wanting to do your own thing , at that stage you should have your form down on just about everything .

    Ps
If you join im the hairy guy called Chris :D,

They actually do have proper barbells. I use one all the time to deadlift and military press with. If you want to squat though its the smith machine.

The gym at the skerries community centre has a bunch of free weights and a squat rack and other stuff. I was actually surprised at how well kitted out it is. Definitely worth checking out given how close it is to you.

i used to work in Image, for over a year, John who owns it knows anything you will need to know, hes like an encyclopedia on legs :D also he knows how to get results, theyve had many people compete in NABBA and RIBBF bodybuilding comps, most recent was Enda, Mangi and Aido, Enda won and went on to the mister universe for experience i think and Mangi is consistantly top 3 so i think John gets results people work for.
as for the gym itself it has everything and anything the OP would want to improve strenght, also the staff will have the time of day to show you the correct technique for exercises which beginners may struggle with(not just beginners, i kow people training years with sh!t form) but so i would recommend it..

i have a hunch there may be a new gym in Rush soon though, just a hunch though.............

The gym is Lusk is small, but has everything you need, plus you'll get great advice from Aky who owns the place... If you're into serious freeweight lifting though, you probably need to look elsewhere...
