    Hi,

Im doing a decent amount of running lately and i need to get some gear but i need some advice.

Firstly i was recomended to get "bycycle shorts" for wearing underneath to prevent chefs arse (im seroise!) and other such skin iritations found down there caused by running. Now here is were im confused because bycicle shorts are padeded and i would imagine to be very annoying to run with, maybe this person was refering to those undergarments footballers use? please if anyone could clear this up for me and explain were i could purchase this thanks.also what are they called i dont want to look like an ejit :)

Also im looking to get some "Shin Braces" to help cope with shin splints (because i plan to do alot of running when i have them), can anyone tell me were i can get them, and if they actualy work as well?

Boot socks for use (obviosly) in boots i plan to do alot of running in boots, would sport shops stock this? will they know what im on about if i ask for them? will "special sports socks" do the same job?

that is all for now if i have more questions about gear i will post in this thread, thanks!

Yeah perhaps you should ask some PDF people if they do much running in boots (as opposed to marching/exercises)?

Even still I'd rather save my feet and legs for as long as possible and get a proper pair of running shoes and running socks.

I'd say you might want to get a second opinion there on what gear to get, sounds a bit loo laa to me. Believe it or not, not everyone who runs gets shin splints. My advice (especially since its summer) would be - runners, socks, running shorts and tee shirt.

    thanks.

About the 'bike' shorts - you're right, running in regular cycling shorts with a chamois would be daft. They're just called lycra running shorts AFAIK, Nike and others do them.

Like others said, just get regular shorts and a t-shirt and get running. Chaffing generally doesn't become a problem until you're getting a good amount of miles in. Buy some vaseline to apply to areas that'll chafe.

chaffing can be a problem for some people even at short distances. When people say bike shorts for running, they mean lycra thigh lenght running shorts that prevent chafing as nothing can rub.

    Like these

There are also ones available that look like normal shorts but have the lycra inner. They are popular for trail running and adventure racing, eg:

never heard of 'shin braces' for shin splints and I have had a lot of trouble with them. You can't brace a muscle from coming off the bone easily. What you need for shin splints is stretching your calves. Running in boots will most likely bring on terrible shin splints if you are a sufferer from them, most people get it sorted by getting the right running shoes for their gait.

If really running in boots get some really good, expensive insoles. Socks wise get some trail running or adventure racing ones, they should be long enough

great post thank you very much you helped alot, any idea were i can get some good insoles? tailor made for me?

and yea shin braces seen a guy at the gym who looks like hes seriose into his running and hes got them (i think) looks like that rubber foam but its wrapped aroud the shins tight i would imagine, i must ask him about it i thought they would be common...

and when i mention running in boots im talking about the army im not some lunatic who gos on 10 mile runs with boots!:D

Edit: i have a champion sports/Elverys nearby (limerick) i supose they would stock this stuff?
