    Hi all,

Just been looking at outboard motors for my dinghy and have discovered that they're cheaper in the UK.

Here's the question: If I buy on there and bring it back, am I liable for import duty/customs/VAT, etc????

    Mike

Nope, we are in the EU and free movement of goods is part of that, excepting cars ;)

Nauti bits in Carrick-onShannon are getting in 4 stroke outboards for dirt cheap, they are only small (2.5HP - 15HP) but the prices start at 300 euro.
Might be worth taking a look.

Just be careful, there are a lot of outboards being stolen at the moment in Ireland. Make sure you have a valid receipt for anything you buy and cover yourself properly.

did exactly that a few years back, bought a top powered 4HP 2-stroke suzuki, big beast...

In all seriousness, the guy in the UK, had it Alphadotted, and Tags, and serviced, and all sorts, I mean, it still looked brand-new to me.

And, despite sitting lying up for just over 18 months, I got it out a couple of weeks ago, and it started on the 7th pull of the cord.

Go for it I say. But try and get someone who lives in-land, as then it should likely have been used on freshwater rviers or lakes, and not been abused in the sea. Then, take it home, and abuse it in the sea....

We brought an outboard in a few weeks ago from the UK and saved a packet, even after the cost of shipping.
We found it on ww.boatsandoutboards.co.uk & bought it from a marine shop advertising there that had it fully serviced and we were delighted with it, started on the first try :)

Many thanks for all the replies.

Just back and bought a small 3.3HP Mariner engine (2-stroke) from Burlesdon Outboards near Plymouth. Very pleased with my purchase and found the company to be very helpful. Got it for £499.

I could have got a 3.5HP 4-stroke for £450, but the 3.3HP was lighter (which suits me).
