You seem to hear on news about record companies starting to catch up with people who download a lot of music online , i presume they track their IP a address or something like that.

My question is, is that actually something to worry about in ireland? I find it highly unlikly that IMRO or whoever are gonna turn up at my door looking for probably quite a lot :P

I mostly use Utorrent sometimes sites like <snip>

Doubtful tbh... There are probably 1million + people who download music in Ireland, they'll hardly come after everyone.

As far as I know they are more concerned with prosecuting and tracking those who upload tracks...Followed by people who download a lot or nothing but free albums.

    🤪

Not sure how long this thread is going to stay open but I always buy albums of up and coming bands and smaller band. Tbh I don't listen to many of the big bands so don't "download" very often.

A lad that went to college with my mate got done for uploading. Fined €300 and that was about 2 years ago. Apparently he just got unlucky that they chose to follow up his IP.

I've had at least 4 friends of friends being slapped with around 2k fines each.

I always wondered that, ifthey can trace crimnal activity back to an IP, why they don't go after more serious criminals.... the likes of underage porn for a start...

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I break into peoples homes and steal their cd collections i think its more honest than illegally downloading

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I download most of mine. At this stage I'm downloading dj sets more than anything. I don't think this is illegal the site I get them from seems legit. I have bought a few albums lately Digitalism and does it offend you, yeah where the only albums this year I felt obliged to buy.

I much prefer the way some bands are now saying their music is free you just pay to see us live.

I used to download, but I don;t actually bother downloading much anymore. Especially given the fact one of my friends got nabbed for the oul downloading. Poor bastard. :pac:

Wouldn't say no to taking stuff from other people's iTunes though. ;)

If you're worried about your security and/or anonimity online (and not just from IMRO, torrenting isn't 100% safe or anything) there are ways to protect yourself, PeerGuardian for one, and Tor is another.

I bounce all my illegal downloads off dozens of satellites and relay stations, just like teh movies.

If they try to track me on their giant screen, they'll just see loads of yellow lines going all over the shop. Take that, stupid governint

Yeah but would they bother lookin at them in the first place? I imagine torrents and other such things are way more popular

they'll only get you if you use stuff like kaza or utorrent but megaupload and all that is grand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,647 ✭✭✭✭El Weirdo

I'm pretty sure that everyone who uses 3mobile "broadband" has the same IP address. How would they trace a particular person then?

Mind you, if you're using 3mobile, it'd probably take about 2 weeks to download a whole album anyway...

I believe my IP address says i live in dublin, when that is not the case.

And yeah, I download practically everything i want. However, its usually WWE (Wrestling) theme music that they have no intentions of releasing anyway, so i dont feel guilty about it. Ive purchased all of their CDs. If they dont wana release everything they have, then thats not my fault. i shall obtain it other ways.

(This is "thread of the day", by the way)

/tracing IP addresses of everyone in this thread. :)

I would've thought that the big torrent sites would be where people are caught?
Or does Peerguardian guarantee those people anonymity regardless.
Megaupload/Rapidshare wouldn't be affected really would they?

I'm not too sure if you understand exactly what a 'torrent' is.

They don't have to bother, the routers can do it for them and anyhow I'm pretty sure that while a certain % of downloaded .torrent files is legal, very few packages of .rar files are :)
Or does Peerguardian guarantee those people anonymity regardless.

It just prevents you from connecting to a peer who is on a banned list making it less useful in Ireland where I *doubt* we have a group of concerned citizens who keep the list updated with Irish p2p-tracking companies.

they'll only get you if you use stuff like kaza or utorrent but megaupload and all that is grand

Probably very true. It's the people who are sharing that are usually targeted, not the people who download as such. So people who stick to HTTP downloads are less of a threat.

Fro the OP, I uses to download everthing until the time came that I no longer had enough time in the day to listen/watch everything. I now downloaded rarely preferring Internet radio streams (PhantomFM and RadioParadise.com). It's €22 per month for unlimited cinema access in France so now don't bother with downloading movies to watch on my 19" screen :)

I pay for it all though I used to download illegaly.

For sheer ease of use you can't beat iTunes store. I'll gladly pay for convienance.
And why download films? Sure you can buy most DVD's for under €10 in xtravision or www.play.com

I can understand students downloaded stuff for free, not sure about everyone else

Someone with more legal knowledge can correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not illegal to download copyrighted material.

Just illegal to distribute it without a fee going to the owner of said copyright.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 337 ✭✭'Ol Jack Chance

downloading sucks. I like the whole process of ripping a cd onto the laptop, getting the song names and then putting the new cd in my stack, then standing back and admiring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

I don't download, just borrow from my friend who does!!

I'm just waiting for a decent legal service, can't believe there still isn't one but Amazon will be along with their DRM free store in a few months here. That's where I'll be shopping!

    iTunes not do?

Limited DRM free music and it's cheaper to buy the actual CD most of the time!

There are many, many threads about this on Boards and are well worth reading.

The law changes from country to country. In Ireland I believe that it is illegal to download as well as illegal to share while other countries just deem it to be wrong to share.

Hmmm a load of people who use an internet bulletin board download music illegally? I'm sure the people who buy the most music use (or know how to use) their computers the least.

Mm I dont think they could go after everyone but I would agree that charges and stuff have become more abundant. Two people I know got fined fairly heavy and before them never heard of it happening. How do they know!!?

How often do DJs get asked to show profe of purchase of their MP3 collection if they are running a show from a Laptop.
