Any time we go for pub grub we always go to the Ashford house. Its got one of the best steaks you will ever eat, cheap to, don't forget to get deserts to sticky toffee pudding is to die for:)

Wicklow Heather is by far the best in Wicklow for food... there garlic mushrooms! YUM!!:D I had my Daughters communion lunch there and we go there very regulary and we have never had a bad experience. We actually went up this evening...just coz! (you would think there was no recession in our house!!):)

I know its not pub grub but Casapepe in Wicklow Town is really great. They also have a smaller place called Al's diner. They do a pizza called "Zakia". Best pizza ever!! i have never had a bad one!!

Otherwise its Chester Beattys or Jack Whites but both can be hit or miss.

But if your insisting on just best pub grub... my favourite is Sean Ogs in Kilmuckridge buts that wexford!!!;) worth a drive though!!

Is Wicklow Heather a pub though?

Best pub grub in the west is Hollywood Inn. Excellent quality food, varied menu, super service, friendly atmosphere, huge beer garden, lots of parking..... It just "ticks all the boxes"!!!

So.... where is everyones favourite pub/informal dining location?

It a bit of a drive but my vote goes for jack whites, N11 near Arklow

    what do you think?

Indian Spice in Greystones. As a curry addict this is by far the best ive ever tasted and I grew up in SW London in a very indian area.

That's just a takeaway though, isn't it? We're getting a long, long way from pub grub now.

    Bray - Martello on seafront
    Laragh - Wicklow Heather
    Glendalough - the hotel
Blessington - West Wicklow pub at the square
Baltinglass - Germaines, just after Spar
Arklow - Lucy Doyles, Castlepark off the Main St.
    Tinahely - Madelines, main square
    Brittas Bay - McDaniels

All I can recommend from around the county. Good grub in each location.

I would agree with McDaniels in Brittas Bay. Fantastic food especially the seafood chowder. Pure heaven.

The Blessington suggestion (i live there!): The West Wicklow House I'm going to assume you haven't been there in quite a while Bruce. The food in there is simply shocking, hence why it does a pretty poor food trade these days. It used to be class but what ever happened about 2 years ago has just put the quality through the floor.
It's picked up the last six months or so. :) I'm notoriously picky about my food but I've found myself willing to be dragged there of late.

Actually ate there two weeks back at the start of a holiday. Went up to the library cafe for breakfast. Do a very good and in my opinion reasonable breakfast. Never like how they changed that lounge from leather seats and all that to the wooden look. Makes sense when you see it in the cafe form.

On another note. I heard a rumour recently that Zuccini was closing down. Anyone hear anything more on this? True/untrue?

Agreed and Wicklow Heather is always excellent but I suppose it's not really pub grub but very relaxed and family friendly.

It's pretty variable if the truth be known. I've had some good (but not great) food there, and some truly awful, dried out and over cooked stuff, mainly roasts, but as you say, if you can eat it, there's plenty there. I'd rank the Wicklow Heather (although not a pub) and the Roundwood Inn over it any day of the week though.

Oh yes, although not a pub either, has anyone tried the restaurant that's opened up in the Djouce Golf Club, just before Roundwood coming from Kilmac? It's called the Farm Restaurant or something like that.

Anyone know anything about the Blue Gardenia (technically D.South I guess...)
Was talking to a girl in Zellers the other night who's on the search for a new watering hole and pubgrub purveyor since she's not keen on the new owners/staff...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭westwicklow

The Blue..... That's a NO from me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭westwicklow

Was in Lee's pub in Kilcoole on Sunday, now i'm not saying it was the best pub grub ever but it was very good but it was really good value also.

On Sunday 1 kid under12 eats free with every adult main ordered.

Suits me as we have 2 kids under 12 so happy days, the portions for adults and kids were huge,we didn't eat a thing for the rest of the day.

Mountkennedy Inn in Newtown does great food all day (12pm-10pm).

Great portions, great food and great value too.

    Lovely pint of Guinness too!
