A day's revision will ace it - just hate P2 being mixed with Physics - Going by geog and english, don't expect anything unusual with the format being the same since 2005

Hopefully it will be nice and easy for the last year of the course.

    Hopefully.

Yea i do it, and im hoping for a very good grade in it aswell in HL. Hopefully a b1 or a2 if all goes well.

Some of the years are imo much harder than other ones. I just hope we get an easy one because i enjoy the subject but a hard exam will be such a down putter!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,762 ✭✭✭turgon

The only thing I'm worried about is that 1(c) of paper one will be too hard, forcing me to do question 6, which can work sometimes.
Otherwise I'm doing questions 3,5,7 (all the odds)

I am so awful at Tech. Im doing HL, and I can do about 4 questions well. Anyone got any tips for me?

I was in the situation where I'd only barely pass at best....I got 38% in the pre but I changed to pass a few weeks ago. It's so much easier and you would be better off to do pass and go for a (B2 45points) rather than risk failing the higher level paper...

    Hopefully it will be easy:rolleyes:
my class only did 4questions on each paper so i dont hav a choice. bad ye

do you have a board t-square and paper at hom

    thats essential

everyone else gonna bring in an addjustable?, i think its kinda necessary for time keeping specialy on perspective/ interpenetration and any others u have to work alot off auxillary views

Of course, i find the adjustable one of the best things going for tg. Couldn't do the exam without it!

I bought one in fifth year, hate it. only use it when someone has borrowed my other set square. Sliding set squares are just the way I do things.

Am happy that I know it well.
Will go over my formula sheets on thursday.

Yeah I do. Love the subject and hopefully gonna get an A1

We only have an option on Paper 1:
Q1 - Planes nd Lines in Space
    Q3 - Solids in Contact
    Q4 - Interpenetration
    Q6 - Conic Sections
    Q7 - Oblique Place

    Paper 2
    Q1 - Perspective
    Q2 - Roof Geometry
    Q5 - Skew Boreholes
    Q7 - Earthworks

I can't stand Perspective!!!!!!!! Its the only question that might block my A1!! maybe q 1 (c) too

What other questions do people hate??

I despise the earthworks question! It gets so messy and ****, and if you make a mistake and have to rub out it just gets worse! But it's one of the easier questions so I'll prob do it anyway.

Same as me i despise perscpective, on paper 1 circles rolling and spirals is probably the easiest question going in tech graph dunno why people dont do it

    I'm doing;

    PAPER I

Q1 (Hope there's an easy D part in there!)
    Q2 (Simple)
    Q3 (Hope there's an easy C)
    Q6 (Simple)

Q5 if I don't like the look of a Question.

    PAPER II (A)

I'm doing the CAM question / Developments / CAD / Plan, Elevation & End-View (Leaving it to last this question takes over an hour!)

I used to use an adjustable all through 5th year, finally changed to sliding set squares in 6th, so much quicker and handier imo.

Sometimes yea it is, but for questions like perspective it's essential.
Oh I hate perspective too, and the loci question is probably the easiest thing on the Leaving Cert, easy marks ftw :D

Ever tried doing logarithmic spiral scale paper 1 q5 with sliding set squares, f**kin nightmare, and doing interpenetration and perspective is so time consuming without an adjustable imo

Lads, ye'll be fine. Do some practice and you'll pass. I did mine 6 years ago 2 days after I had a bike accident and it went fine.
What's this about it being the last year of it? What's happening to it?
One note I'll leave for you, doing TG is the same mind set of programming if any of you intend on doing Computer Science in college.

its changing to design and communication or something next year, just means you do 50% on CAD i think

In my opinion it's same mindset. For Object Orientated Programming you need to be able to think in the 3rd dimension in my opinion, so if you are good at TG you should be able to do OOP without much bother. There's no comparisons, but it's just a similar mindset.

Good to hear man, thanks for that ;) Love the subject and intend to go on and study computer applications in DCU.

Hopin for an A1 in this, if all goes well i'll do question
    2) Theorems (Will do question 1 if this is too awkward)
    3) Solids in contact (always nice if you know your planes)
    5) Combined movements (easiest question, everyone should do it. You'l finish it in 15 mins)
    6) Conics (generally nice, i've a feeling a hyperboela will come up)

Have inter penetrations on stand by too. Might do it if it's nice, but only if i've plenty of time at the end. Bitch takes a while!

Little worried about time for paper 2. But it's generally a fair paper.

Perspective is time consuming regardless of the method - absolutely disgusting question, wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Do ye draw the elevation for perspective directly above the plan??

Whenever I do it always ends up on top of the finished perspective drawing.

I love Earthworks!!! One of the easiest questions on the paper!

I wouldn't worry about the elevation falling on top of the perspective, and don't waste too much time on the ele. Theres no marks for it. Just draw enough to complete the plan, and to get heights, angles etc. It doesn't even need to be drawn in heavy. You can still get an A in perspective if you don't complete it, just do some of all parts/blocks of the perspective.

Does anyone have the moethod for drawing the plane diretors for the hyperbolic parabaloid. You just produce a strike line as in the skew lines right?

Pretty much. Except the level line in elevation is on the ground (XY) then in plan the strike will be the Horizontal trace.

Then you usually have to translate it somewhere because they tell you the plane has to include a certain point, don't you? Unless I'm mistaken...

Does that mean one or two of the lines in question will touch the xy line, then basically bring down a line parallel to the other line and where it hits xy line bring it down?
Sorry if that makes no sense but its hard to ask in words.

Yeah, that has been the case recently. But if you locate the basic VTH, you'll have most the marks.

Yes, both lines will need to touch the XY line. Sometimes you will need to extend one onto the ground. e.g. point d in 2005

    qwerty do you teach TG?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

Yea I didn't realise that, regarding the 2005 solution, that he starts in the plan rather than the elevation to get the traces. Is that right?

Not sure what you mean starting in the plan?

    Heres a clearer solution.

Thanks but it states that you draw a line parallel to BC from A in elevation, do you mean plan? Because I don't see that line.

    Nevermind, see it now, hidden.

Great solution, very clear, did you do it yourself?

Regarding continuing AD on to locate a point on the trace, that just the method whereby if the line hits the xy first in elevation or plan then you just draw a vertical down or up to meet other extension?

Sorry, again hard to ask a question through words I guess.

Would you by any chance have some of those solutions for the area questions and maybe conics or oblique planes?

You are probably referring to the likes of 2002. If the distance between the XY and plan was greater you would get a clearer understanding.

Ah Areas (Geometrical Problems)... My favourite. I have a few bits on that, Shame it's gone from the New DCG course. I also have some of the Oblique Planes. Fraid I have nothing on conics.

    Oblique Planes...

O sorry, I didn't mean conics I mean't the locus of a circle, but now that I think of it I don't think its too bad, one of the easier questions sometimes.

I don't really have any year in particular in mind, but perhaps the more recent years, I just think that it would be good to have areas as a question if I need it.

I've studied theorems regarding the question on conics, but I just can't really get used to the question, so I'm planning not to do it. But regarding areas I find that I study the theorems but the question on dividing a shape up into different parts is difficult and although my book has a good few theorems in it I can't usually do those bits. I find the mean proportion parts fine, but again hopefully I won't need to try the areas question.

O yea, you don't by any chance have the method on how to do the 2007 areas, rergarding the division of the shape.

Hadn't it done, so heres a rough drawing for you. The 2002 files opens for me

Edit: Just going thru a few questions here with a friend and realised I read the 2007 question wrong/didn't read it at all. :o

I used a square of 40mm side, but should have been equilateral triangle of 60mm side. Pretty much the same scenario.

Make sure you read the questions carefully tomorrow :p

Does anyone draw a border on the sheet???

Waste of time I would imagine, unless you did it before the exam. Does everyone else line up all their sheets on top each other, and then take them off after finishing each question. If so, how many sheets should be set up?? I'd say 5 - 4 for each question and an extra one for Q1.

Look perpendicular to the line of intersection, then look along the line of intersection. The planes will then form that familiar X shape.
