June 9th Predictions?

Aside from the 3G iphone mentioned in another thread, what else do you guys predict or hope to see in the Apple WWDC?

For me, i would hope for an update to the apple cinema displays giving them built in iSights. Also, i think that apple will bring out an update to the mac mini.... possibly making it ridiculously small, but maybe thats just my imagination wondering! LOL

Also, on macrumors.com i read that some people were speculating that Apple might release OS X to computers other than MAC's...... which i think would be a terrible.

    What you all think/predict/wish for?

Ha, yeah, i hate that..... i got caught with my last ipod video. I bought the 60GB 5th gen a week before the 5.5G 80GB came out. Ah well, i love that ipod.......

What else do the people think??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,568 ✭✭✭ethernet

Perhaps a sneak peak at features in 10.6.

I also see a revamp to the MBP (new cases) in my crystal ball

If there are going to be new Macs, it'll be an aluminium Macbook - to complete the transition from white plastic across the range.
The 3G iPhone will be announced of course, but its the iPhone 2 software that this conference is going to be all about.
Hardware changes apart from the 3G chip will be minimal, its the software that Steve will be showcasing, this is a Developers conference after all.
Expect a few surprises with iPhone 2 software, and a glimpse of what will be available for purchase from the Apps Store on iTunes.
And don't forget that this software will also be available for current iPhones,

I know Apple favour downloads over optical media but surely they've considered a Blu-Ray drive on their Macs?

Other than that, I'd imagine higher processing speeds and like someone else noted, out with the white, in with the aluminium MacBooks (a good thing, the white is just asking for smudges and wash-out colours)

    obviously a 3g iphone...

    alluminium macbook as already stated

something with the imac since there's a lot of speculation there

    new ipod maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭johnk123

I think you could be right about that new ipod projectmayhem. The ipod classic might up its storage. (Similer to what apple did when launching the ipod video 5th gen and then updating the 60GB model to 80GB)

Also, it could be possible that the ipod Touch gets more memory..... but i doubt it tbh.

And i do agree with you guys, there is definitely a good chance of aluminum macbooks

I think this might explain the Golden Gate Bridge ad with the slogan 'A landmark event. In more ways than one.'

Usually those ads do mean something. I can't wait to find out what this means.

I hate to be a party pooper here, but the Apple WWDC keynote tends to be heavy on developer/platform messages and promotion rather than announcing new consumer products... They do these in Tuesday mini-events these days. It stands to reason since the week is all about coding. The 3G iPhone is a certainty, however, I'll grant you that. The iPhone is their fastest growing platform right now.

Oh, and a Mac OS release for generic PCs is a strong contender. Not exciting in some ways, but a game-changer in others.

while you are right, wwdc comes hot on the heels of apple saying that they're doing less and less shows/conventions. they want to focus on a few big events each year where they can have a real platform for launching products. i would have thought this was their prime time show, bar macworld

I think it'd be the best thing that could happen to the PC industry... Microsoft badly needs competition.

And a touchscreen iMac... Deffo one of them coming soon. What, with windows 7 focusing on touch screen tech.. Will be all the rage the next two years....

Heres a question. If the rumoured OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard update proves true and it is just a collection of security and speed improvements what do you think the odds are it will be a free upgrade to Leopard users?

I'm convinced Apple are going to announce their own virtualization software at some point so who knows something might be mentioned on Monday.

If that's the case, it might be like the firmware upgrade for the iPod Touches where you paid a nominal fee to unlock the the extra apps.

There is never new iPods annouced at WWDC. It is supposed to be a developers conference so it is mostly Mac stuff. September/October is usually iPod season.

Depending on the full feature set of iPhoneOS 2.0, it might not be unreasonable to expect a similar update for the iPod Touch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

There is a very good chance that 2.0 will be released for the Touch tomorrow (expect to pay a nice fee for this) but there probably won't be any physical changes to the iPods tomorrow.

That's true, but they're also doing more of it at small, carefully managed press events that they host themselves. It's much easier to manage expectations and to stem leaks about upcoming products, and costs a fraction of hosting a stall for a whole week in an expensive venue. They'd rather get you into your local Mac shop where you are more likely to actually buy the new gadget. WWDC has had some hardware announcements, but they tend to be developer/pro kit rather than consumer kit. And the keynote inevitably has a bit of platform-specific chest-beating, to let developers know that they're backing the right platform (expect to see the piss taken out of Vista in an almighty way this year).

I think it's very important to remember that the iPhone (and it's cut-down little brother the iPod Touch) are Apple's next OS X based software platform. They are really just small cut-down Macs. And so, when people bitch about features missing from the iPhone such as say, MMS, and hoping for iPhone 2 then they're forgetting that these things can be added via software alone. Apple sees them in terms of a software platform, not as static hardware. They didn't add those things because they figured they'd come back to them later on.

Unfortunate the iPod Touch will only have paid major upgrades for the foreseeable future, much like the Mac.

Anyone up for a bit of WWDC betting? Put me down for iPhone 2, iPhone Firmware 2, iPhone Store (all €2 no-brainers) and Mac OS X 10.5 to be renamed OS X 10.5 and to be useable on any supported PC - 10.5.4 will be the update that supports it.

Not sure I'd be willing to bet on a Mac Touch, but... Those crazy guys! You never can tell!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭papu

no way!! will they let os x be used on any pc platform , becuase then people wouldn't pay such a high premium fo apple machines

I'm sure we will see a Mac Touch before the Mac software going PC. Apple won't go PC. Their Macs are seeling more than ever. Why now would they put the Mac software available for the PC?

History says they won't - that was Steve Jobs' very first act when he got back on board, to kill the cloning program. That and kill the Newton project. I remember it well, I nearly bought a clone myself, they were much, much cheaper. However, Mac are now basically PCs, and even come in cheaper than the very same hardware from other manufacturers. They just don't make low-end hardware because it's a loss-making niche. But maybe they'll consider allowing it to be installed on other PC hardware - remember that's not rocket-science to do it yourself, it's really more of a legal issue than anything. I think that since they let Windows onto their hardware (that is, easily, via Bootcamp) and held their own, they're getting cocky and deciding to let OS X run loose...

Really, I'd put a couple of nickels on betting that. I'd probably lose, but only by a couple of nickels.

its not going to happen steve wont let his os on anything but their shiny overpriced machines , i really am suprised that psystar hasn't been taken out of it by apple yet...

Agreed. OSX on a pc — not a chance. Things would have to be bad, really really bad for Apple to even consider such a move.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

    The most likely, in order:

    Update to .mac -> me.com
    3G iPhone
    GPS iPhone
    Multi-coloured iPhone
2 iPhones - one thicker, one thinner
    10.5.4
    10.6 unveiled

I'm holding off buying my 24" iMac until after the keynote. I wonder if we'll see an Atom-powered Mac Mini revamp? There were rumours a couple of months ago of a reduced-form factor Mini, with a solid state drive, but it's all gone quiet since then. If they threw in a blu-ray drive, it's something I'd seriously consider for my media center.

The reason for that is that Apple's machines are no longer overpriced; it was true once but not for at least 2 years now. You can check it yourself - they use the very same parts as other high-end PCs. They just don't make cheap no-margin rubbish, and as you might be aware, when you buy a €500 or less notebook from Dell, they aren't making any money on it. The high-end Apple kit has the very same margin that Dell's does, and so costs the same, part for part. You can do a comparison on their sites.

Psystar is not a threat to Apple in any way other than defending the EULA Agreement that comes with the OS. Think about it - they are bargain-basement boxes with no software support and no software update for the OS, with a very limited audience... Would you rather mail order one of those, or get a fully-supported Apple box? If you were up to coping with a Psystar then you could probably build one yourself. Mac OS X runs on stock Intel hardware, with a bit of work to get it going.

Agreed. OSX on a pc — not a chance. Things would have to be bad, really really bad for Apple to even consider such a move.

    SP

I actually think the opposite; things are very, very good, and it might be part of the long term strategy to consider other hardware in order to propagate the software platform (Apple's margin's are no longer hardware dependent like they used to be) - at some point they'll hit a hardware sales ceiling and maybe decide to push past that. But on the other hand, the more I defend this controversial notion against you lot, the more ridiculous I'm starting to sound so I'm going to drop it because I'm going to look increasingly stupid come tomorrow's keynote... ;)

About 5000 people in line for WWDC....goes all the way down the side of moscome west and around the block.

The strange thing is that the Apple Store downtown did not have their windows obscured or anything. I seem to recall that all Apple Stores shut their doors and obscured their windows for a couple of hours leading up to the iphone v 1 announcement. However, the Apple store this morning looked 'normal'. No activity. No new marketing material. All visible.

I'm expecting this new computer device 'fusion' thing to come true so.
A global store outage is a bit bigger then iPhone 2 comes to US, with other countries getting it later.

The store goes down at all times for any update, so even if any new hardware is being distributed in the US only it might still be for updated iPod Touches.
