Lifting standards

I have been looking at lifting standards online, how important is it to be able to lift to these standards?
I'm not far off the standards for my weight and was wondering if many use these as progress indicators.

not very important. depends on your goals really.

i think the best progress indicator is being able to increase the weight you can lift after time, and continually increasing it.

Isn't there like 4 different types of standard tho?

Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Elite yeah? I remember something like that was posted here and I worked out what weight's I'd need to be Intermediate and I'm still working up to them.

    I think at 82kg I'd have to bench 90, squat 120 and dead 140 :o
Ah wait they're wrong, they're just for beginner I think, jaysus!

What standard? There are many depending on your "training age" etc.
For example you often hear of Un-trained, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and Elite standards

This is the best illustration I've seen of this kind of stuff:

Untrained: Expected level of strength in a healthy individual who has not trained on the exercise before but can perform it correctly. This represents the minimum level of strength required to maintain a reasonable quality of life in a sedentary individual.
Novice: A person training regularly for a period of 3-9 months. This strength level supports the demands of vigorous recreational activities.
Intermediate: A person who has engaged in regular training for up to two years. The intermediate level indicates some degree of specialization in the exercises and a high level of performance at the recreational level.
Advanced: An individual with multi-year training experience with definite goals in the higher levels of competitive athletics
Elite: Refers specifically to athletes competing in strength sports. Less than 1% of the weight training population will attain this level

    Is this what you mean?
Standards are based on body weight and training level, I'd come under the novice category

Based upon those (at 162.lbs bodyweight) I am legendary bang on intermediate bench, half way between novice and intermediate deadlift, and 2/5 of the way from novice to intermediate on the squat.

--> All those years of messing around in the gym ignorantly not knowing what a squat or deadlift was

    I <3 stats :pac:

i didn't even make it to the *untrained* level for the bench press! there goes the past 8 months, eh? :D

oooh the bench is an evil mistress for girls, don't be too concerned. When I started to lift I could barely manage the bar and it took me a looooong time to lift anything significant. I still can't do a bodyweight bench, but not far off it.

From what I've seen girls who are really good benchers tend to specialise in it (then there's those beatches who are good at all the big three... jealous, moi??!) Still, I'm happy being an advanced bencher and an elite squat/ deadlifter :)

I'm at the novice level, have been in the gym for about a year now but to be totally honest have only been dedicated to lifting for 7mths.
Bench is a killer, not quite up to the novice level just a couple kilo off but will get there very soon.

I'm between intermediate and advanced for bench, though a lot of my current weight is fat rather then muscle so I reckon I'm doing well.

    +1 Vegeta!!!

It's all good though. Those standards are pretty high, and definitely give something to aim towards. I'm geberally a novie- the gap to inter is pretty huge...

Thats a good chart, just wish the yanks would join the civilised world and start using kg's.

    my results:
    press advanced
squat intermediate (not suprised, kinda thought it may be less)
    bench intermediate
deadlift novice (dissapointed, I know 130kg's isn't major, but....)
    power clean intermediate

at least I now know why the clean & press is my favorite lift. The old back injuries are good again so hope to get the deadlift up to an advanced number, 20kg's isn't mush to ask!

Yep, this has come up before. I would still like to see figures for a guy off the street untrained, it is certainly no where near the untrained figures show on that list.

In the previous threads people had forgotten that these are all 1RM figures. I never really do 1RM work, so just figure it from those online rep calculators.

There are lots of military PFTs online that you can checkout.

This page has lots of links http://www.military.com/fitness-center/military-fitness/stew-smith/archive
