Right, let's make it official. Boards meet up 6.30 at the Sports Hall in UCD. You'll know me by my nervousness, large holes in my ears, and cap with 'TinyExplosions' on it. Aim to leave shortly before 7.

    Who's up for it?

Tom (or anyone else), you want to meet closer to town and cycle out to UCD together, or are you getting a lift?

I'm in. lets say the steps of the sports hall, to narrow down the location a bit more cos it's a pretty big building and there'll be loads of people milling around.

You get your card scanned and off you go.

There will probably be a queue to get cards scanned due to the amount of cyclists involved - allow enough time for it

Cool. If we're heading to UCD, best to meet at the corner of Kevin St and Patrick St -outside the Spar at 6? should be early enough to get out there and warmed up nicely

I'll give 6.30 a go- is this to get to UCD or are you planning on leaving at that time? Tiny- you know you have to wear a helmet over that cap? (The W200 is my helmet's annual excursion that it looks forward to all year.)

Meet at 6.30, in order to get our card swiped and on the road by 7.

I know I'll be wearing a helmet, but not while standing at the steps waiting for you guys :)

Oh, and to really make me stand out, I'll most likely be in my pink fat cyclist jersey too

I'll be there, just don't expect me to be much of a conversationalist at that time of the morning.

No, I've decided to do it in the fat cyclist jersey out of support for his wife, who's terminally ill with cancer -I'll be in my boards shorts and socks! :)

We'll be testing the contents of your "water" bottles just in case you forget to put vodka in them.

Is it wrong to go out the night before the wicklow 200, or just really stupid? Hopefully I'll see you guys there, I'll be on my oversized Giant dressed in a lot of blue unless the jerseys come through.

It won't help; personally I'd advise against it. I've done 100km+ the morning after relatively heavy drinking and it does sort of sober you up sharpish, but I definately feel that I would be going better had I not drank anything the previous night. Similarly with the sleep- even if you get only a little (and I have managed with 4) the event will sort of carry you through it but I'd feel better having been well rested.

A drink or two Saturday would be fine though personally I plan no drink on Saturday and in bed by 11 (which will probably mean bed by 1am based on past performance ;-).

A friend is coming back from london and has planned a get together, which generally means crazy night out in town. I've already put myself down as a no, but i was tempted to head out for a bit, no drinking of course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

No harm in heading out for a bit and not drinking but I'd try to get to bed early, you'll appreciate it when the alarm goes off at 5:30am or whenever ;-)

is it the start time at 7am, compulsory?
i mean, does people doing the 100km has to be that early too?
i reckon that if somebody doing the 100 starts at 7 or 7.30,would be back the latest at 1pm.

    thanks

You can start anytime you want between 6am and 8am.

I'll see you guys there at 6:30. I'll probably arrive a little earlier than that, as it seems as if I'm one of the unlucky few who didn't get their entry packs in the post and I'll have to sort that out first.

Does anyone know if the clonskeagh gates will be open to cyclists to get in at that time? I couldn't be arsed going all the way around to get there. Suppose I can just lift the bike over and climb if necessary...

Here's a wee tip... bring safety pins with you to pin your number on your back.

ha I spent ages trying to peel the backing off the 'sticker' only to discover that it's not a sticker! DOH!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

I sewed it on last year. Safety pins might be a bit easier all right ;-)

jesus - i just woke up in a bit of a lather -convinced that this was the big day, that i was hungover, that my bike was in tiny pieces in the shed, that i'd spent the last six months smoking galloise and eating ice-cream, and that all my cycling gear was in the wash.

    the fear has arrived.

i'm fairly sure that the cautious optimism will be back presently, but that was wierd.

I'll be looking out for Boards jerseys, shall drop over to say hello.

Plan to be there about 6am, soak up the atmosphere, look at the bikes......people watching.

Plan to go around with my brother this time. He did the 100 last year so it's new territory for him. Will be taking it easy.

    See you all.

Now, another three pints of water. :pac::pac::pac::pac:

Cheeky I know, but I don't want to haul my DSLR around the 200 :) If anyone is getting a lift out to UCD or something, could they bring a camera to take a snap of us in our gear -to send to Carvalho, and just cos it'd be nice to have! I'll have my n95 which can take pics if need be, but a proper camera would be better :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,032 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

I'd never heard of the Wicklow 200 until my mate rang me yesterday and asked if I'd be on for it. Naturally I don't have an entry due to the late notice but he's saying I should just show up and do it cos it's all on public roads.

What's the etiquette on that - does it seem outta order or fair enough and will there be plenty of people doing the same? Of course I wouldn't avail of any services or food put on for paying participants. All is surprisingly quiet on the forum at www.wicklow200.ie.

I'd only be on for doing the 100, not the 200 at this stage.

Best of look to all taking part. Hope the weather's good and all that.
I'm not cycling these days but I might just drive the course tomorrow to remind me what I'm missing. If you see a big blue people carrier don't be scared.

I'm bringin a camera too, very important part of the cyclist's kit! It's crap before u ask, but I was wondering if we could line up for a shot of all the boardsies either before or after the event. Before is probably more convenient.

Good luck to all the Boards lads, might see you at some point, will be cycling the 200 with my buddy from Portsmouth. We'll have bright yellow 'Blazing Saddles' jerseys. Hope we all get the weather we deserve....

As you say, it's public roads, if you are not availing of the services I'd say go for it. You won't be the only one.

I'll also be bringing a camera, small little Optio S10.

Maybe this will bring a smile to your faces...

    (met eireann latest)
Sunday will be cloudy in the west and northwest, with some rain or drizzle. Elsewhere, early low cloud and any drizzle will clear and spells of warm hazy sunshine will develop in the afternoon. Winds will be light to moderate, mainly southwest to south; highest temperatures 17 to 22 degrees.

Good luck all and safe journey. I only live literally around the corner from UCD so might pop up and do some of the route in the morning. Not back training long enough to try the whole lot.

Good day out, weather held up, well done all!

Started a bit late but still met a fair few boardsies out there. Stuck in a bunch as far as possible on the flats which made it a hell of a lot easier than last year. Thanks to everyone who gave me a tow, hope I repaid sufficiently!
