I normally take it in my Post workout shake. That way you don't taste it. It's generally better pre or post workout. It doesn't really taste of anything, but it's a bit like eating tasteless salt unless you mix it with something.

What do you mix it with?

off topic: just wondering when are the best times to take protein shakes? before a workout, after a workout or late at night etc.

Some sources I have read say that mixing creo with OJ wastes it:

Don't mix creatine with citrus juice. Orange, grapefruit, cranberry, in fact, most fruit juices have been most recently found to neutralize the activity of creatine monohydrate. The reason is the waste product creatinine develops. A lot of you put creatine on your tongue and drink it down with grapefruit juice. If you have taken creatine this way in the past, stop it now! You are not getting creatine, you're getting waste product.

    While others say its fine:

Creatine is not destroyed in warm water. It should be solved in warm water! Creatine degrades at 303 degrees Celsius. Orange juice or other sources of citric acids will not degrade creatine into creatinine. If this were the case, creatine would never survive in our stomach which is much more acidic than citric acid. However, these juices will only deliver a medium insulin spike, for the best effect go for dextrose.

    I'm confused:confused:

That really depends on your diet overall. The "best," time to have a whey protein supp is after a workout. Whey is digested very quickly - which is what you need post workout because this will help repair and build muscle. A mix of whey protein and a high glycemic carb that replenishes muscle glycogen post workout are recommended for optimal recovery and growth.

Other than that protein supplements can be effective any other time of the day to bridge protein shortfalls in your diet. Although, if there are any shortfalls in this area I would recommend that you re-evaluate your diet to make sure you are getting protein from as much non-supplement sources as possible. (e.g meat, fish, eggs, dairy)

Yeah I dunno tbh.... there's so much conflicting information out there. I'm pretty sure a few years ago most creatine manufacturers recommended OJ as the mixer for creatine. I dunno if that's changed tho.

With that first study you quoted, I half get the feeling that they tested it with ONE fruit that contains a high amount of citric acid and drew their conclusions about ALL of the other ones from it. And if that's the case I would be skeptical (hto I honestly have no idea if that'swhat they did).

    Hunter,

Not sure about the product you are thinking about buying, but any creatine product I have taken, I just mix with 300ml of water.

As for before/ after training, it depends on the product, but it will always say on the tub.

At the moment, I am taking NO Shotgun which, while rancid tasting really, really works for me. I take this twenty minutes before lifting, and then take BSN Cellmass straight afterwards.

From talking to guys who train in my gym, I have found that different products work for different people, and it's really trial and error. For example, I didn't think Maximuscle Cyclone was much good, but I do know some guys who love it.

As Hanley said, there's a lot of conflicting reports out there, so probably best to take a chance on the product and see how you go. If it doesn't work, try another, and if it does, buy loads of it in case it gets banned

^^You're not just taking straight creatine mono tho. It's fine mixing it water when it's alreday got dextrose or something else in the powder, but without something to create an insulin spike taking it with just water is gonna be pretty worthless!!
