Opinions please, went to my favourite Cinema in Galway last night to see "What happens in Vegas" and the place was stuffed with skirts n dresses to see "Sex and the City" now im not complaining as there was some serious hotties in there but why is there a need to dress up for this??? Some women mates of mine are mad about the movie and the series but they think that the birds dressing up to see a movie are just plain mad.:pac:

    Tis all in competition imo.

I winned the race when I went to see it. Offaly jersey, Jack n Jones jeans, Cat boots. All the other girls were looking on jealously, and I loved it.

Oh and don't go see it, your eyes will bleed.

Yeah my wife is going to some special screening in Dundrum tomorrow night and had to spend the weekend scouring the shops for the perfect dress and then shoes to match.

Its not that surprising really. Sex and the City was always going to be a fashion event. It's the girl-folks equivelant of nerds at Star Wars opening nights or latest game midnight releases.

That is a bit weird alright.

No doubt they went for a few cosmopolitans afterwards, and then had casual sex with some randomer, but felt strangely empty afterwards...

    Offaly jersey and welly boots?

I have a party in my pants.;)

And don't forget, later that night ..................'I got to thinking about relationships.....do we really need to dress up to attract men, or do they think it's weird?'

Said in best Carrie voiceover voice.

Well the G had some special Sex and the City thing going on with a reception and then a trip to the movie but I don't know if that was last night.

I think I'll just go see Kung Foo Panda instead!

Sex and the City isn't even showing in my favourite (13 screen) cinema. Stupid cinema.

I assume many of these were going out for drinks afterwards.

Also, the new Indiana Jones film is a cheesefest from start to finish, with terrible dialogue, corny one-liners, terrible plot and ludicrous action scenes.

I went to see Sex and the city on the first day it opened. Even as a girl I was suprised at the amount of 'bling' in the queue. I think a lot of girls there actually thought they were something out of sex and the city.
I found it funny aswell that anytime a designer price of fashionwear was shown on the screen, you were guaranteed to hear gasps of appreciation all over the shop- "ooooo Manolo Blahnik!!"

    The movie was great though...

Well I suppose usually people go to the cinema for the hot people, and since they're not in the movie in this instance the crowd has to make up the numbers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,889 ✭✭✭tolosenc

A few of my female mates were dolled up to the nines for it. I also heard that they wemt for caktails beforehand.

    Sad, imo.

The Celtic Tiger had some sense of humour. I can just imagine the dympnas and roisins waiting in line in their good dresses, the orange glow of fake tan matching their ginger mullets. Going for cosmos afterwards in a pub where all the boys are drinking guinness and theres a constant smell of fart. Ah yes the glamour of it all.;)

I wouldn't even bother watching a repeat of SATC on TV if it was the last program on Earth, let alone pay to see this in the cinema. Thankfully, my girlfriend agrees so I won't be dragged to this one.

I can't think of a more unglamorous event than going to the cinema. I wear jeans and I bring my own Tayto. But I go to the cinema every week and you just expect people to look like, at the very best, smart casual. But for fans of the show, this seems like the biggest fashion event since Coco Chanel got sunburnt so it's no surprise that you're going to have groups of fashionistas who have been planning for months to get that new dress, book the expensive restaurant and go for a cocktail bar after... It's probably like a day at the Galway Races for them.

I think its pretty funny that people go to such lenghts for this type of film but then again I make a point of wearing a ten year old concert tshirt for a band I love when they play here. I'm also counting down the days until The Dark Knight comes out and I know I'm going to see people wearing Batman tshirts then (I don't think anyone will go as far as to wear the Batsuit but I hope someone does).

Anyhow, for the cynics amoung us, this is funny: link

Having not seen the film yet I already reckon it's the most overhyped film ever. People trying to seem like they are living the SATC lifestyle by dressing up for the film

    I love dressing up.
I've been using the SATC excuse to go OTT when going out and about.
I haven't seen the film yet but long make this spell last!

Sad film for sad individuals tbh.

Steyr, that was no way near the worst of it. You should've seen them during the weekend. Gah. You'd swear they were at ladies day at the Galway Races. Some even had those effin' hats on!

I think it's sad. And i'm a girl who likes clothes and shoes. I'll be going to see it alright, but won't be breaking out the dresses and heels!! I don't get it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 938 ✭✭✭chuci

think thats a bit odd, why would you spend so much money on an outfit when your dress gets wrinkled and your new shoes will get sticky. whats the deal with hats?what about the person sitting behind you?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,131 ✭✭✭MissHoneyBun

Understandable if going out afterwards. Unnecessary to sit in the dark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭missmatty

I completely don't get it either....i'm obviously not a girly-girl. Only ever (accidentally) seen satc about three times.

    ftw!

You've obviously never been to the Galway Races so! Pints on Quay St and Supermacs after would be more like it...

Oh, and +1 on this dressing up to watch a movie cr@p, what kind of idiot gets dressed up to go into a dark cinema?

Most of the people that got dressed up this weekend were at the G Hotel too before the movie.

I think that's worse! That they're making an event out of a movie. It was really expensive too if I remember correctly!

There are plenty of reasons to get dressed up but going to the cinema isn't one of them no matter what the movie is. Dislike the show its a ode to shallowness.

    I think it's weird.

Maybe they're trying to meet one of the cute single guys going to see this movie alone!

Put on your finest dress, most expensive shoes, glamorous handbag, stroll up to the cinema, pause and just say "eh...one for Indiana Jones please" :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

Well I went to see it tonight, wearing a tshirt and jeans, and I was thoroughly disappointed with the lack of dressed up women. I was going to spend my time mocking them!

The most entertaining part of the movie was listening to half the people in the cinema gasp when a designer label was shown on screen.

As some film critic recently said, it's like watching 5 episodes of Expose in a row.

    It had its moments though!

I think they only did it for the Bank Holiday weekend. But had you been there from Friday-Monday you would've had ample oppurtunity to not only mock, but also be strangled by the sheer volumes of perfume most of them were wearing. Some women were even seen putting fake tan on in the toilets.

I see the future of Ireland...and it scares me! :p

I don't think many would have dressed up in the cinema I went to anyway.

    Not in Galway I'm presuming.

The fake tan part is what confused me the most. They're doing it so they can sit in the pitch dark for 2 1/2 hours when the only thing visible to others is the back of their head.

Nope, in the scumbag cinema in Cork as my favourite cinema isn't showing it for some reason. (I no live in Galway no more :() I'd expect dressing up in the Eye.

Apart from the fact that no one is going to see you, would you not just pass out from the fumes of the fake tan? Plus, a dress doesn't allow you to put your feet up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,082 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

    Put your feet up where?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

Chair in front of you, up against the back of it. I can't just sit in a cinema, it feels wrong. I have to either put my feet up on my chair or, if there's no one in front of me, the chair in front of me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,082 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

Seats are not for feet young lady!
