Surfing Maps Stay - No further discussion on this

    Since certain elements of the surfing community have decided that it was ok to post a moderators name and and private contact information despite it being clear that this was not welcome in the surfing threads and he has subsequently being threatened by members of the surfing community there is to be no further discussion about the removal of the surfing maps.

    The map link stays and the recent arrivals to the site will find their accounts removed as result of this. So much for the surfer lifestyle - sounds like an unpleasant bunch to me.

    Just to add to that. The moderators photo and home address where posted along with references to a personal meeting.

    I would like to add that the surfers in question are an insular bunch of small-minded and selfish cowards and are in no way representative of the massive number of people who surf in Ireland, especially the fine bunch of people on the Surfing forum on boards.

    Glad I don't surf!

    Correct decision by boards, its clear they are supporting the growth of the sport and not the narrow-minded members that throw personal threats towards others across public forums for supporting other users spreading knowledge to the wider community.

    Spread and spread alike ...

    *I was gonna post this on the other thread before it was deleted. If admin deem it a continuation of the discussion please feel free to delete it.*

    Well done lads. You have confirmed my long held suspicions that a lot of surfers are just a bunch of cliquey, spoilt tossers.

    I come from a well-known surfing village and would not be in the least bit surprised if some, if not all, of the "locals" posting here turned out to be nothing more than blow-ins to the areas where they claim to be locals.

    20-30 years ago many of the now well known places to surf in this country would have been considered secret. Its impossible to keep them secret for long. Its a natural progression.

    Its a small world, lads and there is nothing you can do to stop people finding all your spots. Especially in this day and age.

    You have done nothing to help your argument here over the past couple of days and I would now be inclined to post all of these spots on canoeing forums. Childish, yes. But what's good for the goose and all that...

    I'm not going to tar all surfers with the same brush as there seems to be a fair few who (although new to surfering) use Boards and seems fine. What I will say though is that I'm disgusted with how some people think they can bully others into doing what they want.

    I intend to go on a spree of advertising secret spots in the next while ..... and an attention whore like me knows how to get info out there.

    It's ok, they're still on the KML file loaded onto that post (if you click "View in Google Earth").

    Managed to save myself a copy yesterday from the google maps so everythings intact, as I'd a feeling about these guys and wanted to keep something to use against them should they act up. I hope it doesn't píss off any real, nice surfers but these guys have brought whatever happens now on themselves.

    Just tried to attach it to this but it won't take KMLs, if anyone needs a copy and I'll send it on to Beru.

    Edit: Just noticed you can download it straight off there by clicking View in Google Earth - Save to Desktop (rather than open in Google Earth)

    That particular KML must reference online placemarks because they didn't load into Google Earth on my machine :(

    But if you have them on your machine still that means you've stored them locally and can probably save a new file with placemarks intact... If so, if you could PM them to me and Beru that would be awesome! Or you might be able to attach it to a post if its zipped.

    http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/Europe/Ireland/index.html

    This is a decent site with details of all the main surf spots in Ireland. Very few of the spots mentioned on the google map are not mentioned on here too. It has directions photos and comments about most spots with dangers etc outlined.

    Another site not as good as above is

    http://www.beachwizard.com/country.asp?country=Ireland

    Im all for educating newer surfers and having spots that are not real secrets available to aspiring surfers provided they are well warned and aware of potential dangers and are sensible when arriving at spots and not bring a truckload of mates with them. Real secret spots will never get near the net anyway.

    Maybe this post could be included in the sticky too?

    I'm thinking of banning anyone from the poker forum that asks for or gives strategy advice as it might make things harder for the rest of us......

    These surfer dudes really were on to something.

    Done and saved as a .kmz so have attached it to this post, hope it works this time! :)

    These Guys in NO way represent the majority of the surfing community in Ireland, someone please gets these maps and publish them anywhere possible.

    Surfing in Ireland should be something we encourage and promote, home and abroad!

    No one "owns" Ireland or the surf spots.

    Nope, doesn't show up for me either. Rb, could you create a new google map yourself from your KMZ and then invite collaborators?

    I'm not getting it either but that could just be my rather strict restrictions in work.

    Next boards beers on the beach anyone?

    Weird. I've clicked it from the Google Earth forums and the attachment that I added here, and it's opening fine. I don't think it's just because I have them locally, as it's adding a new addition to my places and adding the spots to the map. At the moment, due to opening it so many times all the spots are coming up 4x!

    If others could test it and let me know, particularly if it loads the spots a few times as I think I saved it with one or two copies of the spots opened.

    [nerd mode]I opened the file in an XML editor and there's very little there so unfortunately it looks like the placemarks aren't saved in it.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.2">

      <name>Surf Breaks in Ireland</name>

      </NetworkLink>
    </Document>
    </kml>

    There's only one thing for it Rb, clone your hard drive and send copies to everyone!

    Maybe they are saved as "My Places" in the toolbar on the left? If so maybe there's a way of saving em? I dunno.

    I exported the placemarks straight from GE to the forum using the application itself,

    post is Here

    Could someone verify if the .kmz on that post loads alright?

    Am also trying to load the placemarks onto a google map from direct import but having difficulty there too. In the left toolbar, when I enable a "place" all the spots show up, when I disable it, they disappear. Even with those I've opened directly from the browser.

    Very odd, will keep playing with it, I'm sure we can get this!

    Of course it does. You are tarring all surfers with the same brush and ruining it for the rest of us. Do you believe all surfers agree with naming people and their personal details?

    Really, have you nothing better to do? Could you all stop patting your backs and just leave it lie?

    Its unfair to those of us that argued the point in fair and reasonable fashion.

    The damage is done- the map is up - its spreading like wildfire and we will all see the fruits of this in time, but for now can you all please grow up and just leave it there.

    Thanks
