Fish Oil Caps

Talking to a guy in the gym last night..................

According to him most fish oil caps are a load of b0llox because they're gone off. Thus, making the effects of the caps are negligible. Udos oil or even eating an extra tin of salmon a day are far better options.

Has anybody else heard anything like this? Does this punk have a point or is he spewing gibberish?

Well I know, taking a one a day cap will be far more practical than trying to consume a tin of Salmon every day.
I can't see how they are 'gone off' and thus rendering them useless - some testing somewhere would have made this startling revalation a long time ago.

Exactly, if fish oil caps were 'gone off' then there would be evidence to back it up. I think that the guy in the gym might be wrong about this one.
I can't stand fish so fish oil caps are the perfect way for me to get what I need. If I could stomach fish then I'd try to have that and the fish oil caps daily.

Fish Oils are processed to extend their shelf life and remove toxins such as mercury. Raw fish oil will go rancid within two or three days as anyone who has left a maceral in the fridge for a few days will tell you.

Unfortunately the processing, heat and light can damage the good stuff in the oils. There are different "pressing" or processing methods used. And the method used often determines the quality and price of the Oils. As a rule of thumb self life is the best indicator of the quality of your oils.

The oils are not gone off, they are fine really. Sure Edos Oil is the creame de la creame, eating too many tins of tuna or salmon and your back to the mercury issue again.

I eat fish a couple of times a week, I take fish oils (about 10g a day) and Edos oil (about 10g a day). My fish oils are not a premium brand and they are about 6 months old, I have even crack a few open from time to time to make sure that they have not gone rancid.

What your mate in the gym told you wouldn't change my behavour or be a cause for any immediate concern.

    Hes no mate of mine!

I take fish oils and will continue to do so. I just wanted to see if there was any substance in this.

They are good fats. Fats that heal.

They contain Essential fatty acids (EFA) which we need to survive. Like any good fats, if you havn't been getting enough, you wil notice an improvement in you shin, hair and nails.

EFAs play a huge role in the production of hormones so the list of benifits goes on and on.

The main benifit is to reduce inflammation throughout the body. This will result in improved overall health, which should result in a lower risk of heart disease and an improved cholesterol score.

Some fish oils, for example krill oil, also contain very potent antioxidants which have all sorts of additional benifits. Good luck finding krill oil in Ireland though and if you do its bloody expensive.

Fish oils are brain food, actually your brain in made of a huge amount of Omega 3 fatty acids. Most people who take fish oil will notice improved concentartion an so on.

I think from the replies so far it is safe to say that there is no substance to the idea that fish oils caps have already 'gone off'.

Did you ask this guy where he got this info from?

The little I've learned about fitness after years of being a student and instructor of taekwondo, is that moderation and balance in what you do are keys, diet and supplement moderation included. Aside from all the hype, I'm not sure what popping a fish oil cap a day will accomplish (for real). I do enjoy eating different kinds of fish as a part of my diet (love salmon too!), although I would not force myself to eat it every day (no matter what some so-called expert said). I'm sure there are other foods that will accomplish the same thing as fish, and a mix in your diet is not only tasty, but healthy (I would think). Moderation and balance.

He said it in passing and I only really thought of it after. I'll ask the next time I see him though.

Reading my OP again you will see that I said:

It ain't hype. I agree with almost everything you say re moderation and I am very sceptical when it comes to supplementation but not when it comes to fats. The modern western diet is nothing like what we have evolved over the past couple of million years eating. There is a lack of EFAs in our diets and the portions of Omega 3:6:9s is also a bit screwed up. There has also been an influltration of damaging fats into our diets from things like in margarines, shortenings, and heated oils in the past 50 years. The results are there for everyone to see: increased heart disease, cancer, and Type II diabetes.

Also, you'd wanna be takeing more that 1g of fish oil a day;)
