Ubuntu Java Problem

I cant seem to get java web applets to run in ubuntu. All i get is a blank box where the applet should be.its the 64 bit gutsy gibbon. I've tried installing "iced tea" and java from the sun website and various combinations of the two and it wont work.

I'm aware that sun advises that 64 bit machines use the 32 bit web plugin for the time being and i have tried that (not necessarily correctly)

My lack of knowledge of java is a huge barrier because I'm just installing and uninstalling packages hoping that some combinations will work.

I've only just switched to ubuntu from windows so I'm not that savvy yet. I also made the bold decision of not having a dual boot with windows, which i am beginning to regret.

Great move. You'll get over the frustration. :) It just takes a bit more reading.

Try this and have a good look at this site. The 2nd link in particular has _loads_ of useful info for those new to ubuntu.
