It should be allowed. That is all.

    I agree.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭Rb

    I disagree.

There'd be too much scope for muppetry, and every thread would end up riddled with lolcats. Not that that's a bad thing, I just think it should be confined to Feedback.

It's bad enough as it is. Think of feedback on speed.

I'm confused, are you arguing for or against? Because that would be a winner ;)

I see absolutely no problem with this.

    Bad idea.

You can link an image if you really have to.

Why was it disabled in the first place?

Doesn't have the same effect most of the time.

An hour after it was enabled, the boards.ie servers would explode in a mushroom cloud caused by an overload of lolcats, failpics, facepalms and demotivational posters.

I have this image of Cult screaming to Devore "She cannot take it, Admin. She just can't", while sparks fly around the violently shaking room.

A panel explodes, hurling the charred Vexorg across the room.

Cloud rushes to check his pulse, while Devore, grim and determined, grips the edge of his chair, staring forward into the certain death of the server that the AH crew, led by Pighead, have commandeered.

Slowly, Devore stands, faces forward, and quietly gives the order to seperate the boards servers.

The vulnerable forums, parenting, humanities, PI, The Ladies Lounge and others will flee in some servers.

The serious forums, politics and feedback stay. The Brothers of BRGH are given the offer of safety, but none take, knowing that their admin will have a better chance with them.

Devore surveys his posters with a grateful and moved eye.

"Mr. Cult", he says quietly, "Ramming speed"

    "aye sir"

    /Cut to the AH ship.

Pighead's brows knot in confusion as he stares at the approaching server, then his eyes go wide in shock and horror, and he opens his mouth and screams "Devooooore".

He is still screaming as the bridge of the other server collides with his. He sees Devore still standing quietly, gazing as him as the server quickly begin to buckle and minor explosions run long the lengths of both servers.

Just at the last second, Devore and his crew are beamed out by the resourceful posters of The Ladies Loungue. They all watch as the other servers explode.

Later on, Devore and Cloud are sitting in Devore's office, chatting away about what happened.
Cloud: "We had no choice Admin, they would have consumed everything".
Devore: "Yes number one. But it was our choice to give them the technology to post pictures in the first place. We must be more careful about who we give that power to. Not all posters are as advanced as us."
Cloud: "It's just so hard to see them unable to enjoy funny, appropriate pictures, lightly interspering conversation"
Devore: "Maybe, number one. There will come a day when they will be able for pictures, without using them for LOLcats. But, for now, until they advance, they must do without, and we must stand against those who would give pictures to those unready for them"

    /inspirational music

Cut to server fading into the void.

Might be good to have for a trial run for a week or so. Worst case scenario it could be turned off again.

Yeah, enabling image tags on afterhours sounds like a good idea

unless the servers explode due to overloading from having to download thousands upon thousands of irrelevant pictures. Boards could suffer death by lolcat

I hope you're not implying that pics of this calibre are pointless...

...+1 to the idea of giving it a trial run of a week.

For the very rare time that it is really desirable, it's not worth the hassle (i.e. additional scrolling, extra pages of lolcats and facepalm, et al, not to mention the uproar when porn and even NSFW stuff is posted)

The odd time. We nuke it as fast as we can (Under the No Fun Allowed in AH rule)

the tag links to offsite images normally, they don't need to be stored on the boards.ie servers, in fact the majority (all?) are not. There is no additional 'load' on the servers, in fact the server only has to send probably 50 bytes or so for the average linked image, probably ends up saving bandwidth, who knows what the AH poster would have typed instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,378 ✭✭✭Krieg

As was mentioned, server would explode due to lolcats. Even if there wasnt a bandwith issue, I can imagine lolcats being used WAY too much resulting in a flexible rule (see "YORE MA").

1 week trial sounds like a good idea though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,396 ✭✭✭✭Karoma

It's just a radio button click away. I'd be okay with a 1 month trial.

If you would like to see more of these hilarious images appearing in every single thread, used in a terrifically original context by posters who clearly display towering intellect and dazzling wit, then please allow AH images.
Bashing the Roma and moaning about scumbags just isn't the same without a lolcat!

every time i see that picture i die a little inside. such a waste, it's so sad... :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

nowadays i browse AH more on my phone than on a pc so if images were turned on in AH it would make the browsing experience an awful lot more difficult if not impossible.

you could just say "turn images off" but then i'd miss the point of a lot of posts. right now people have to explain their posts in nice, low bandwidth words and if a picture is really necessary, they can attach it.

i like it that way but i realise that problem won't affect most people

    No.

Does anyone know why they were turned off in the first place? Was there some kind of situation, like in soccer?

Mostly because mods got tired of cleaning up NSFW crap. I think.

Could we just allow images from certain sites, like Flickr, where there is a degree of moderation already? It would prevent a lot of the worst stuff getting through.

Don't think so I'd rather not have to clean up Polmki's NSFW picture fests and go through pages of cats if I want to read something.

Bad idea, there's already an AH forum for funny pics so the only thing this would add is catfests and bannings and more sob threads here about why was my pic removed.

I don't see the problem with linking.

Thanks rb, I'm a 56k-er (at home anyways), fuppin cat threads take ages to load...
