    Hi all

Im looking for a recommendation of a good palatable protein bar. I head to the gym around 5ish and having had my lunch at 12 I need a substantial snack an hour before my workout as Im hungry by then. Up until now Ive been eating popcorn and snack a jax but think a protein bar might serve me better.

    Any recs?

    Thanks

Yeah I'm looking for something that primarily tastes great and provides decent protein...although from what I have seen, these bad boys ain't cheap.

Why not munch through a few handfuls of nuts from noon through to 5pm? Protein and good fats.

You could throw in a banana at 4:30pm for a bit of an energy boost too.

yes besides the high price the sources of protein in the bars (usually soy and MPC) are not great, and they havr a lot of sugar and fat!

    Thanks for the suggestion

I need something handy and filling and a bar would be convenient. Ive tried a German brand called Weider but they are expensive and dont taste great. BUT, in saying that I had a half bar (around 120cals and 2g sat fats) before the gym yesterday and it sustained me better thant normal so am pretty happy to stick to the protein bar.

A girl in work recommended Myoplex diet bars and suggested I would get them cheaper on Ebay. Was just wondering if there were other brands that anyone used and found okay.

i used to eat Detour Bars (15g whey protein with 6g fat... 3g of sat, 0g trans) on occasion, were handy when hiking, as not much fun preparing a shake on the side of a mountain...
    http://www.detourbar.com/products.php?product=1

they now have many versions of the bar, i'm sure we only have a limited range of them available here though

Do they taste okay and where did you get them?

taste wise, they were ok - best eaten with some water to hand...

i used to get them from a guy here who sold them, but haven't seen him posting in a long time... Holland and Barrett had them I think, altho they were expensive as sold individually

    [url=http://irish-lifting.com/product_info_supplement.php?manufacturers_id=11&products_id=122
]irish-lifting.com [direct link][/url] sell them by the box

maybe go buy one in H&B to see if you can handle them, then order a box from irish-lifting if you do?

Coz at most you schould have 10g of fat pre or post workout

Ive tried a German brand called Weider

They are not German their a pair of American (or Canadian im not sure) brother’s the same guys that run the IFBB , and publish flex and muscle and fitness

Id recommend Animal Snak bars you can get them from Irish-Lifting .com 30g protein per bar and the are sold as a pre work out bar

A 200g bag of almonds is about 50g fat, so a few handfuls will be less than 10g. Did I say scoff the whole bag?

I have tried laods of bars and my favourite one is here
    http://irish-lifting.com/product_info_supplement.php?cPath=2_34&products_id=130

It is a meal replacement bar (48g carbs, 22g protein), very good real food ingredients, whole oats and whey are the two first ingredients and only 6 grams of sugar per bar.

I like the ones t-nation.com sells, they use good decent protein and they taste real nice. You need to order a few boxes to make it worth the shipping costs though

Ive tried "Animal Snak" - not bad - and a few others whose names I can't remember.
I now always have a stock of Peak Body Mega Pro 50 (Chocolate). Can't get them here so I have to buy online.
    100g bar
    339 Cals
    50g Protein
    9.6g Carbs (8g sugar)
    Polyols 12.7g
    Fat 6.5g (5.5 Sat)

I like the taste but others who have tried them don't. I usually can only manage half a bar at a time. They work out at about €2.50 per bar.

Snak are good but with 30g of sugar per bar its not really hard, you have to be careful when you take them...

I actually bought one of these with the Weider one to try. Will give it a go tomorrow but as Im only eating half of it prework out, will 9g of protein suffice?

9gms of protein??? What are your goals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,336 ✭✭✭Dave Joyce

Not sure if its too much hassle but would you not try a meal replacement shake instead. My hours can be crap and don't get time to eat so definately need something that won't fill me too much before heading to the gym and I've often used Dietfuel from USN. Now funnily enough I don't like their Protein, (their protein bars are very good but costly, think about €3.50 each) but this stuff is good, does the job and mixes easy in a shaker. I also use ocassionaly in the mornings when I've an early start and want a little longer in bed, and add peanut butter and oakflakes and thats filling without making you feel bloated. For a single scoop bout 50mg, Protein - 25g, CHO - 15g, Fat - 1.69g Think the tub which is a 1kg and lasts a while was about €40. Worth trying out.

I just want to lose some body fat and am looking for a good snack pre work out. Up until recently I was eating popcorn or snackajax an hour before my workout at 5pm.
