As the title says, nearly a week after getting it nobody has explained sucessfully how to get the wireless internet going, lads if ANYONE says Linux is as easy as Windows I will castrate them.

    I've got this far:
    ciaran@ciaran-desktop:~$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.
    wmaster0 no wireless extensions.
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:""
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:05:5D:25:9B:F4
    Tx-Power=27 dBm
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2346 B
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    ciaran@ciaran-desktop:~$ sudo ndiswrapper -l
    [sudo] password for ciaran:
    rt2500 : driver installed
    rt61 : driver installed
device (1814:0301) present (alternate driver: rt61pci)
    ciaran@ciaran-desktop:~$

Now I've tried to delete, and skip the alternate driver as advised here
(Ndiswrapper site) however thats not working, every time i reboot it just comes back as was

Should 'mode' be set to 'managed'? Try:
    iwconfig wlan0 mode monitor

    1. What linux distro are you using?
    2. What wifi card is installed on your machine?

    1- Ubuntu (from Wubi)

    2 Sitecom: http://www.sitecom.com/drivers_result.php?groupid=5&productid=525

An update is that I successfully blacklisted it, but now it doesn't load at all (see attached)

    Thanks all:D

It maybe possible that you are using the wrong driver's wrapped into ndiswrapper.

    http://linux-wless.passys.nl/query_part.php?brandname=Sitecom

from that list your card is not supported or won't work under ndiswrapper.

    Information maybe out of date!

    J.

Well here's an updated list (from ndiswrapper site)

    http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/index.php?/component/option,com_openwiki/Itemid,33/id,list_o-z/

What do you know- it's not on it

Linux is officially dead to me:(

What version of Ubuntu - Hardy has much better support than Feisty or Gutsy.

And don't give up on Linux. It's not the fault of Linux that manufacturers won't write drivers for it - but that's changing.

    It's Hardy he's using..

Your main problem is most unbuntu users are windows users they don't have a clue what they are doing on linux.

Being a free operating sytem, pay the manufactures some money and i'm sure they will write alll the drivers you need.

Before installing any operating system you should check the list of hardware that is supported.
    Linux isn't magic......

Who are you? would it help if I started with debian?

I have discovered that, now again who the fredo are you?

Edit: By the way a quick look at previous posts reveals such poatings as "That grammer is typical of nigerians" And you argue that XP is better then Linux, yet find me and give out to me? You are thick, or made up by Linux users as their 'enemy'

Edit: Also I was a wondering that since the card doesn't actually run off the standard windows thingy, can you eh wrap the programme which does run the card? (Or any windows programme)

Since you unbuntu noobs haven't a clue how to help the man I might aswell do it.

Go back onto windows xp and download the drivers.
When you run the installer it will install here.
    C:\Program Files\Sitecom\Sitecom WL-171 Wireless LAN Card\Installer
Now copy these files onto a usb key or floppy
    Rt2500.INF , Rt61.INF

    rt61.sys , RT2500.SYS

Boot up into unbuntu and cp the files to your desktop then on the command line cd to your desktop
    ndiswrapper -i whatever_your_inf_is.inf

    Goodluck,

    Clueless Linux user follows --->>

Hi conceited, are trying to insult the OP.

By reading his/her oringal post, you would see, have tried the ndiswrapper route unsuccessfully this far.

The card he has trying to get working under linux, has been reported as not been supported(by omission) from the ndiswrapper list. Search google for this card and there is only brief mention of this card working under linux. (but still not with out troubles).

If you have the exact same card working as the OP then give more details of how you got the card to work.

To the OP, as it a PCI card why not purchase a know card that is supported under linux and avoid wasting time on a card that you may or may not get working.

    Regards,
    J.

I'm the only person to help the man so stop trolling .
I gave him an actual answer, not a silly noob comment like whats your card blah blah blah heres what i found on google for you etc etc....

I don't need to search anything to give him the answer I provided because I know what i'm talking about in the first instance.

What's up with this dude??? I mean if someone is new to an OS and wants help and such, it's probably not best to get up on your high horse and tell us all how great you are and how you know everything...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 891 ✭✭✭conceited

    Hi troll,
Have you anything remotely interesting to add as regards the mans problem with his network card?

Don't encourage him - I've already put this twat on ignore.

@OP - corkie's suggesting is probably the best. This card doesn't look like it will work reliably under Linux. And despite a certain troll's comments that's not the fault of Linux - manufacturers are only now starting to write native drivers - but Sitecom isn't one of them.

You could pick up a card on the cheap - just check first that it will work.

I'd say that'll hurt when he reads it :pac:

More on topic, but still off topic: I had a wireless card on my pc and i couldnt figure out why it wasnt working with ubuntu 7.10, was trying everything, what i should have tried was pluggin in my antenna

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 891 ✭✭✭conceited

The guys only searched google for you hoping to find something you didn't.
Why are you giving up so easily?
Linux is supposed to be fun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,948 ✭✭✭corkie

i knew before searching google that the sitecom cards had been being giving trouble in linux. i knew some worked and some didn't so just needed to confirm the fact.

There is another option but no guarantee that it will work for the OP. There is expermintal code disabled in the Linux kernel 2.6.24 for the rt61 driver.

This would require a recompile/patch of the kernel and a download of matching firmware for his card, which would rule out the need for using the ndiswrapper.

if the project is successful in figuring out the bugs in there code, the sitecom card maybe supported in the future.

    Regards,
    J.
