I think that had very little to do with it, the nightlife in Salthill just never moved with the times. Bigger and better(debatable) clubs & bars that were more professionally ran opened up in town and thus people followed, if i remember correctly CP's was pretty much the beginning of the end for Salthills nightlife.

damn that ****hole of a club:p

The castle was going down hill before it closed - imo that was the significant begining of the end of Salthill's exciting night life.

Good times -necking bottles of thunderbirds before ensuring our fake IDs and paraphinela was in check! :D

id always though it was the drugs bust and the rally riot which was the start of the end but appaerntly it was going down hill a long time before that

We used to come down for the rally every year without fail....We used to stay in a B&B near Joyces.... Salthill was THE place to go out. Great craic...! CJ's was some spot.... ! Good times until '99. The Garda were ill equipped to deal with the riot.... The rally was cancelled for the next few years and when it came back it wasnt the same ... Maybe we had got older and the whole scene moved on a generation...!

Because of my experiences at the rally and Salthill when I got the job here I grabbed the oppertunity with both hands and never looked back :D

Rally weekend in Galway a huge amount of scumbags arrived in Salthill. The carpark on the promenade was full of donkeys doing donuts etc from very early in the day. There was serious drinking going on so every scumbag was wound up to the nines.Anytime a garda car etc drove through salthill it was pelted with rocks bottles etc, i saw a kid no more than ten plant a bottle right into a squad car at three in the afternoon much to the amusement of a jeering crowd. It was very very rough down there, scary in fact. I saw a man driving past Kilorans when some pisshead walked out in front of his car, the guy tooted the horn at the pisshead and he ended up getting pulled out of his car to be given a hiding, all this **** was going on in broad daylight.
Later on they gathered in the carpark behind Seapoint, doughtnuts the usual ****e. A paddy wagon came down in the late afternoon with guards in riot gear to displace the crowd but the couldn't even get out of the van because they were being pelted with bottles and people were trying to topple the van over.Eventually reinforcements were brought in from all over the county and in the wee hours of the morning they just went in with battons and hammered all around them :D

There were a few in town alright but majority were in Salthill. As said before better venues opened up in town which resulted in places in Salthill shutting down.

To be honest, the demise of Salthill as a location for nightclubs is largely down to one man , (now retired) Supt. Jim Sugrue of Salthill Garda Station.
    1. He hated Henry Greally who at various times had The Castle and Oasis/Lenaboy Arms
    2. He hated drink. Famously sent a bunch of cops who'd just come on duty at 2.00pm on a Sunday (when the pubs were supposed to observe the Holy Hour between 2 - 4 pm) to raid Lonergans Pub, where all the Guards who had just come off duty at 2.00pm were having a Sunday lunchtime drink.

They weren't that much better - Kno Kno's, The Bentley and CP's. Kno-Kno's became the GPO and Bentley became Cuba

Can anyone help. Trying to settle an arguement - I'm trying to remember some places in Salthill from the the late 80s /early 90s.

Close to the prom, had Celtic 'art' and possibly owned by Monroes. Had regular gigs for touring bands.

Second was on the same side, and had 'Ruby Tuesdays' on Tuesday:), possibly downstairs.

Third was on the same side again, directly across from O'Connors.

    Thanks

OP: First one was Setanta nightclub was the place with the "Celtic Art" - Murals of Cuchulainn etc. (formerly and more famously 'The Oz' in the 80's) Was run by the guy who had originally revamped Monroes, then Roisin's, then Calico Jacks (now Massimo).
Second was Trends Nightclub, downstairs from 'The International' - Ruby Tuesday rocked.
Third - There's nothing directly across from O'connors except Caesars Palace casino. Down the road a bit was the Oasis (Liquid) and next door The Warwick. All deadly joints in their day!
2am they'd all shove the customers out on to the streets and the great chipper ordeal would begin!

Glad to see Gabby get a mention alright. He worked in various different pubs and clubs in Salthill - usually until he got into trouble for being a bit too "emphatic" in his bouncing!

Anyone know where he is now?

Gabby is still around Salthill - working in the new Bal

No, Castle was where Krcma is now basically, not same side as Vagabonds.

God I still miss that place. Sex Kitchen has yet to be paralled in my book.

Sex Cauldron? I thought they closed that place down!?
