Just had a look on the 3 Irish sites I've used before for supplements, can't find chalk anywhere - are there any Irish sites or shops in town that sell it? I've never used it before so don't know where to buy

    The 3 sites I checked were Irish-Lifting.com, ProNutrition.ie and FitnessIreland.ie

What I will say is this. I find chalk really improves grip and is great for deads.

On the flip side after a serious session (for me anyway) of dead lifts my grip is in bits and doing things like chin ups off rings can be tough just to hang on.

As pointed out - you should be able to get chalk in any outdoor / adventure shop. Look for the little chalk bags / balls that climbers use.

I'm not sure how they'll react to it in my gym, but I'll just go ahead and use it and wait till I'm told not to. Does it leave much of a mess on the bar?

I did my first 100Kg deadlift today - 5 reps, then 3 sets of 4, then another 5 to finish. The reason I didn't make the 5 on the middle 3 sets was purely down to my hands being a little sweaty, I tried drying them with a towel in between but to no avail.

Yep - it can be very messy. Not only on the bar, but where you stand when you put it on. Lots of dust left behind!!

Hmmm.... the gym I'm in is usually spotless - there is a full time cleaner guy who goes from one end of the place to the other and starts over... He'll love me :o

Came across this on ebay - seems like it would cut down on the dust?

Could be worth a try - we have these:

    http://www.simply-outdoors.co.uk/ProductDetails/mcs/ProductID/2109/GroupID/2/CategoryID/17/v/

They say they reduce dust... If so, I would hate to see a product that doesn't!!

That being said, it is a little microfiber net full of chalk dust - so excess dust is to be expected. Application is simple and they last ages.

They are really cheap - why not try a bar and a bag to see which is best? I know the little bags we use can be bought in our local outdoor shop for < €3.

You'll only make a mess if you over use it.

Check my post 8 in this thread. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055295161
I got chalk in a shop that sounds like the great outdoors in town, opposite hector greys in town near arnotts, in the rock-climbing section. The chalk was cheap enough I think €5.50 for 110g which I think is good. It is powder though, I thinki some prefer a ball. They also sold "liquid chalk", it was just chalk and alcohol. I was thinking of making my own solution, might be more discrete for you "banned" gym-goers.

Some other posts might be worth reading.

Don't think it has been overused, but this is what I meant by a mess where you put it on. Admittedly, not a huge mess, but may get bother some gyms!

Just get one of these boys....
    Kooga%20Gym%20Bag.JPG

Throw your chalk ball (my preference is a block) into it and put your hand in to get them chalked. All the mess is confined to the bag. I've been using powered and block chalk in a commercial gym for the past year using this method and they only way you'd know it is cos of the chalk on the bar from deadlifts.

When I'm in Hercs now it's a different matter. Who cares where the chalk goes?? :D

Yesterday I got some chalk in a shop called 53 Degrees North in Blanchardstown SC. Didn't know about this shop before. It is 4 quid for 110 g of powdered chalk and they also have the liquid stuff which is dearer.
