Ok, i'm in my thirties and it's probably been about 15 years since i could honestly say i was anyway fit!
According to any of the BMI websites i've checked i am the ideal (ish) weight for my height - 5ft 11in, 10 stone.
So.. i have decided to give myself 6 months to try and get fit again, what do ye suggest?
My diet varies, i eat alot of raisins but don't like fruit generally, not a great veggie eater either, i like chicken & bacon but not gone on red meat! Love potatoes in all their guises, like the occassional pizza and/or chinese so while my diet may not be the healthiest its not the worst either
Regarding exercise, back in the day i used to cycle a lot, never was any good at running / jogging, never did any dancing or self defence or anything like that and I don't swim!

See my fear is that if i start exercising that i'll lose weight that i can't really afford to lose
    Any suggestions welcome
    Thanks!

That'll sort your fitness out and in 2 months you'll be amazed, never mind 6.

As for your diet...too much Potato = bad. High glycemic. Cut down on them (rice, pasta , bread, grains also).

If you start to lose weight there is a very simple (not being smart here) fix for that. Just eat more !

My advice is dont set a time limit, if you want to get fit in 6months thats very doable, its a reasonable time line for someone who is close enough to their ideal weight.

But what happens 6months down the line? What normally happens is 'I got fit, now I dont have to do anything about it anymore' and you stop. It probably wont work for the same reason fad diets dont work, going on it implies coming off it, change your lifestyle slightly, and put the effort in. Theres enough info around here to get you as fit as you will ever need, but I would advise against a time line, give it 100% and you will get results.

Is there not any way of doing it without joining a gym?
If i cut down on potatoes, rice, pasta, bread am i not cutting out the biggest sources of potassium and carbohydrates which provide energy what would be recommended as an alternative?

That sounds kinda skinny to me for your height. That is like 63kg at 5ft 11in. (I'm assuming you are male - is that correct?)

You may want to figure out what your body composition is. This means looking into whether your body is predominantly fat (bad) or muscle (good), or somewhere in between.

If you are the "ideal" weight, but this weight is just fat with little muscle then you should focus on building up a bit of muscle, and carving off a bit of bacon.

Try to find a sport which you can do with friends, or which your friends have an interest in. It is hard to do something which your immediate friends, family, colleagues etc have absolutely zero interest in (they don't necessarily have to be doing it themselves, but they have to be able to talk to you about it. This keeps you motivated and interested - just my 2c)

    Good luck.
