Dunno, but just go back and pay now and I'm sure all will be well... Probably a common mistake.

Go back, explain what happened, apologise and pay.

Maybe if your guilt is eating you, you should just go back and pay now?

If you're serious about this and the garage is not an all nighter I would ring the local Garda station and tell them what happened and that you intend to pay in the morning. Ask them to write it down. Then if you do get a call you have someone reliable to back you up on it being an honest mistake.

    Did this really happen btw?

i did this a few weeks ago, just call the shop tomorrow and give them your reg, they'll call you if anything turns up on the cameras. When i did this they never called back so free petrol!

garage isnt 24 hrs. and yes it did actually happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

Yeah just go back and tell them the story. They shouldn't really mind since you're not actually a scummer who would knowingly nick petrol.

I'm sure this happens to a few people.

Right so I'd give the local Gardai a shout before the petrol station does if you're really worried. They probably don't report these things until the following day but you never know.

cheers folks. am def not a scum bag and things like this will eat away at me.....no sleep for me 2nite anyway!

A cousin of mine worked at a filling station and was told that, if anyone took off without paying, the cashier had to make good the shortfall out of their wages. Nice:(

Go back for some more petrol. Then Mexico.

What filling station was this? Ebeneezer Scrooge's Goodtime Petroleum Emporium?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

    Relax :)
If you had just filled your tank then driven off, well that wouldn't look good. But the fact that you actually went into the petrol station and paid them money is gonna indicate you just forgot. It probably can't even be detected on their CCTV footage. And I nearly always get billed for my petrol before even saying I got petrol/how much I put in - it's kinda surprising you didn't.

As someone said, it's no doubt a regular occurrence. When they discovered their till was down tonight it was probably a case of "aw sh1t, someone forgot to pay for petrol... AGAIN!"

It happened to me too - I just went back and the girl was lovely about it, not shocked or disgusted at all! ;)

As far as I know, that's not the usual case for gas station employees.

Correct : the only deductions an employer can make without your explicit agreement are PAYE and PRSI contributions. All other deductions need formal agreement and a catch all phrase in a contract is not going to do the trick. Imagine Tesco's or Dunne's staff having to cough up for stuff that's being taken by shoplifters.

As for the forgetfull drive off : don't worry and go in tomorrow to pay. The only reaction you're likely to get is : "Thank you. Don't worry this happens all the time."

What were they supposed to do? Leave the petrol station unattended as they desperately run down the road after the car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,584 ✭✭✭✭Steve

Go back NOW and pay for it - at the rate petrol is going up, you won't be able to afford it tomorrow.:pac:

I changed my mind; set fire to the station and you'll be fine.

Not necessarily. Could be a tactic to avoid suspicion. Just like the lad who pays for a cd but has 5 others under his jacket. It'd be more dodgy to pull up to a petrol station, be there for five minutes then drive off. At least by buying a drink the employee can just presume you were just thirsty after training.

I worked in a station when I was in college. Got scammed for petrol on a few occasions.

NEVER had to pay it out of my wages.

My place did have cameras trained on the pumps, but was never sure if they were actually recording.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 331 ✭✭bookiebasher

A few months ago i pulled into a station with my daughter and got €20 petrol and a €6 car wash...Had no cash so paid with my card...The girl gave me back a receipt with the code for the car wash at the bottom...Drove around the back and was 3rd in line for the wash so i was there for a good 20 mins...

At 9pm that nite the guards landed in my MOTHERS house looking for me ( i moved out 20 years ago) as they claimed i drove out without paying for the petrol...I went Fooking mad......

The manager of the shop rang me 2 days later squirming that the girl had not taken for the petrol and having viewed the cameras agreed that i would not have been on their premises 20 mins after getting petrol if i intended not to pay...

Moral of the story is check your receipts after purchasing items as i never did before this but always do now..

I'd say the guards would be quite annoyed if they were phoned every time this happened. And I seriously doubt they'd be all strict and cold on your ass if you ended up being questioned by them. They'd probably have a bit of a chuckle about it. On a scale of 0 to 10 in terms of seriousness for them, I'd say it would sit somewhere around... 0.1.

Weird, exactly the same thing happened to me a few mths back.

I realised when I got home, and luckily, the garage was 24 hr. I called in and explained the story to the guy. He said they keep a list of people who drive off and it's sent to the local Gardai in the morning. I paid him anyway and he explained that he would take my name off the list and explain to the manager in the morning.

Also if there was any accusations I knew I would be on camera going back to pay. Haven't heard anything since so think it sorted itself out! :)

I know people have said that the petrol stations cant take the money off employees if someone skips without paying, but its true. A certain large garage on a major road heading west does this.
They have pump attendants and my sisters friend who worked there, asked me and all my family that if we were to use that garage to please use attendants and pay them at the pump after they fill your car!

This was to counteract the amount of people who never paid, and would drive off. The losses were deducted from the staff wages. To ensure that petrol was paid for she recommended we hand the money to the attendant after he fills the car, as its all on camera.

This garage is renowned in the area for blatant disregard of employee rights, r.e. longer hours for those under 18 than legal, no breaks, and of course making staff pay for fuel 'stolen' by customers who forgot to pay. and whats worse the pay is already diabolical. My sisters friend is not wealthy and was working 2 jobs to pay though college. The amount of times she had wages deducted because someone drove off without paying was horrendous.

Back on topic, I do know that when my brother worked in a garage, a few people forgot to pay, but came back and the manager laughed at them, told them they were fierce honest! I guess some smaller garages just have a certain amount they write off every week to losses....

ah c'mon, hardly serious comments and I don't see how anyone could have taken them as such.

noticed you didn't chastise the guy who suggested doing it again and making a run for mexico. bring back the old emoticon!!!

anyway, back on-topic, I had to stop at a garage in Ratoath the other morning for fear of running out of juice and was standing there for ages waiting for her to push the little button to turn on the pump.

the whole time I was there I stood staring straight at a sign saying I had to pre-pay for my fuel before they'd turn on the pump. :o

i think I'd even read it a little bit in my half asleep early morning daze without actually taking it in before I realised.

first time I've even seen anything like that, so I don't think it registered in my brain the first few minutes till I wasn't getting anywhere.

As for the garage docking peoples pay, why doesn't someone grass on the owner?

Nobody said the can't, they said they legally can't. If the employees reported this then they would be in trouble, the same with any other laws they are breaking. The problem is the employes just go along with it in fear of losing there job.
