Right I've been following the other thread, and people keep saying others are racist, bleeding hearts etc. So my question is, have you ever come into contact with a Roma person, and has it been a good or a bad one. Be advised this is a public poll and people can see which way you vote!

Has your experience with Roma been a good or bad one! 151 votes

Good, friendly nice helpful people, I would have them as my neighbour!
    0% 0 votes
Bad, they were begging, trying to rip me or someone else off!
    3% 5 votes
This is a racist poll and the mods should remove it!
    91% 138 votes
    Atari Romanian!

Can you define coming into contact? Its a very emotive topic and needs some terms of reference, particularly if there is a public vote "as such".

I don't know, where DID the poll hit???

Anyway, I once had an experience of a Roma coming up to me in the street and asking for money, I told him 'no' and he followed me up the street still asking, getting closer to me each time. I felt very intimidated as he was from a larger group of men too. I just ignored him until I reached the Spire and he retreated, probably due to some Gardai in the vicinity.

Let's try and keep this civil. It's a fair poll (in terms of polls) so lets just use the other thread for actually discussing Romas as a whole, and our experiences with them here.

The only experience I've had with romas in Ireland is having a cup waved under my nose by one with a big whingey head on them.

I was shocked by them in Slovakia though. They live in honest to God slums made out of galvanise and everything. The locals treat them no better than rats. Really they where living no better than rats eating out of bins.

I can appreciate that they come from the very bottom rung of the ladder and have some sympathy for them. If everyone treats you like vermin you'll probably end up acting that way.

I don't see how it's fair at all.

The only encounters that most will have with Roma is in the form of the ones who beg.

I did it in response to the other thread, I am not trying to be unfair, there are two sides to that debate here I am trying to see what the actual experience of those in that debate is. If the mods think it is unfair or inappropriate I have absolutely no problem with them removing it!

There isn't much of an option for those who have had positive and negative experiences either.

I doubt there is anyone who hasn't encountered Roma begging at this stage.

You have to ask why that is though? There are a lot of Polish, Lithuanians, Latvians, Nigerians etc etc here. Why is it that most of my interactions with them have been going to school with them/working with them/serving them while most of my encounters with Roma people are when they are begging or harassing me?

There's nothing really wrong with the poll.

Methinks only a mod of After Hours can change the poll.

I come from Latvia and we have a few Romas there as well. The city I come from has a population of 30 thousand of which approx 200 are Romas. Over there they don't beg, don't steal but they are involved in some shifty businesses. All marijuana market is owned by them. Yet they are extremely polite people. Kids would never ever say anything rude to an elder person. They are taught to respect people. The Latvian government has plenty of integration programmes but the Romas are quite reluctant to that. I guess it's who and what they are. I used to go to school with a Roma, she was one of my best friends but when the kids reach a certain age they leave school cos the parents think that all their kids need is the ability to read, write and multiply.

Back home in Latvia I never had a bad encounter with Latvian Romas. Now over here is another story...

Just my 0.02 on all this.

Could a mod add an option to the poll to allow people to vote that they had both positive and negative experience and make it public?

Every time I've seen them they have been begging.

Called around the house a few times I promtly told them to **** off, yet they didn't take the hint for a while.

Begging at the lights inbound on the N4 at Lucan, Begging at the lights at the roundabout at Liffey Valley.

    Beg, beg, beg.

Throw them out the lot of them.

The only experiences that I have had been with Roma have been negative, I wish that they weren't but it's the truth:

    - living next door to a family with 12 Roma kids. The adults buggered off for 4 weeks and left the kids for themselves. The neighbours had to call social services.

    - being told by a young Roma boy that he would f*** me up the **** when I told him to get out of my office (he had broken in)

    - begging on the street

    - banging on my window at a M50 exit looking for money.

So, they are my experiences of the Roma community. If I had had positive exeperiences I would have posted them too but I haven't.

All bad experiences. They also treat / speak to women like they are filth.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

I've seen plenty of Roma women simply walking - can't just assume they're up to no good. But other than that, all I've ever seen Roma doing is the stuff which has become cliché now: begging, selling flowers, getting their kids to do their dirty work, pretending to be holding babies wrapped in blankets or whatever when it's clear there's no baby there or it's a doll. I've only experienced one attempted mugging (a father and child. I managed to hold on to my wallet and got some barrage of verbal abuse for doing so. I just laughed at them.) To be fair, I've never seen any of them hanging around ATM machines.
I don't know whether every single member of the Roma community is a criminal - I'd be very surprised if that was the case. But it's obviously a serious problem within their communities, just like with the Irish traveller community - however, there are some very decent travellers, I've met them. So I assume there are some very decent Roma too.

I am always willing to be convinced otherwise, but as it stands I consider the Roma people to be virtually subhuman.

I have never had a good experience with Roma people. I have been harassed to buy roses, have had money stolen from me, have suffered attempts to pickpocket me and have had people follow me down the street begging from me.

I do not like them and for the reasons outlined above I am quite justified in not liking them. I have no time for the liberal do-gooders who seek to defend these b@stards.

I would be quite happy to never see another Roma person ever again.

I've encountered them begging on the streets, being aggressive towards my wife jumping on her bonnet and washing her windscreen, when she told them to go away they started screaming at her and lately Roma man and young daughter knocking door to door with a photocopied sheet asking me to "sponsor her"

i was once at my uncles house (he's a detective in immigration) when a roma lady called to the door begging. He took out his badge and proceeded to ask her for id etc, of which she had none, and she almost ran away from the house.

I thought this was a bit harsh by him until he explained this to me:

These beggars are controlled by organised crime who could have up to 20 people working 10 hours a day doing this. Now if you take that they can visit one house every 2 mins and that they get €2 at every third house then thats €20 per hour which is €200 per day-accross 20 peoples thats €4000 per day!

Hypothetical figures but not exactly excessive!

    Atari Romanian!
< The Roma are not necessarily Romanian! The largest population of Roma is found in the Balkan peninsula; significant numbers also live in the Americas, the former Soviet Union, Western Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. EDIT: A right I saw the explanation, still its amazing the amount of people who are of that belief, one of my pet peeves...

Neways I have had no good experience. I find their aggressive begging very irritating and sometimes intimidating.:( I used to work in the Dublin bus office on O'Connell street and the kids used to march right down into the basement office and try to rob phones and handbags. Of any thief's they tend to be by far the cheekiest and most wreckless.

I'm going to ask some very silly questions, if that's ok::o
1.How do you know if a person is Roma?
2.Where do they come from originally? (I admit that I thought they were Romanian, just because of the name)
3.Are they here legally? And if not, why aren't the Gardai packin' 'em off?
