The MK1 granada is one of the best looking cars ever made i reckon, though this one met a sticky end in rosegreen a few years ago,and it was an irish car too...it wasnt the only good MK1 to meet its maker there, i have a few other pics that arent digital.

There was also a 4 door coupe made by Coleman Milne so even rarer than the 2 door coupe.

There was also one written off brand new in London. I remember a blue one being banger raced in the U.K around 7 or 8 years ago.
And there is the famous fully restored white one that is on the show circuit in England.
This one is also lying up in the U.K.

Whats the story behind the new one being written off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 813 ✭✭✭Kevin_Herron

I was told the story by the guy who owns the Coupe strech here, if I remember correctly the car had some link to Buckingham palace?
And was written off only a couple of months old.

There was one in chapelizord industrial in need of repaire last year. Haven't been down that way since so don't know. If you go down the entrance hill and turn left, follow the road and you'll come across it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭granadamad

    cheers dubtom

i have heard about 2 coupes coming out of dublin lately, think one of them was either brown or red, could one of them be the same one you know of?

it's unlikely there have been 3 knocking about up there but i'l have someone call into the estate if I can as i'm not in Ireland myself for a few weeks

    cheers

Strictly speaking there is a Mk2 Copue, as far as I know only sold in Germany!
I'm sure one or two have made their way to the U.K.

In my opinion they're not great looking!

Did they have "coke bottle"as they say type side rear windows?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭granadamad

yea the coke bottle were the first coupes made, launched in 72 but not available in rhd and that made them only for sale in mainland europe

the 'ordinary' coupes arrived in 74

    there isn't a mk2 coupe

production of coupes started in '72 and ended in '77

as said the coke bottle came first in Europe and the 'ordinary' coupe was on the market in '74

For sure Ian but can't be classed as a coupe??
Not in my opinion anyway its a 2 door saloon
They made 2 door mk1 saloons aswell as both shapes of coupes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Yeah, i would agree its just a 2 door saloon, you wouldnt class the MK2 escort 2door as a coupe now would you?:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

While on the subject of granadas, spotted this nice cork city reg one at upton yesterday
    Image531.jpg
And on the way out i saw a white MK1 granada saloon parked at a house near the exit,it was on an AZL plate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭granadamad

nice pre facelift example there!!Probably one of the best in the country if not the best

anyway back on topic, anyone with info on a coupe?

Sorry about that, when I said mk2 coupe, I was referring to the 2 door.

think I am sorted now, got talking to a mate today in England who is going to sell me 2 coupes for very cheap, only off the road a year or so, both white and very clean shells with all the parts there. Have a pic but il wait to seal the deal tomorrow hopefully and il put up the picture then.

Should be able to get the two of them back on the road which will be great. Also got info on here about one in Cork il take a look at in a few weeks.

    Thanks
    Enda

There's a red one off Blarney street in Cork and a blue one in Monkstown in Cork too. I've seen the blue one, needs a lot of work and the owner thinks it's worth a mint, haven't seen the red one but I know a man who has and I can find out if tou want me to.

Bring them on, you'll be saving them from the banger boys if nothing else...they go mad for the coupes.

you wouldnt race these ones in England!! They are mint but probably am getting them at a price some people would pay to smash them up as parts alone probably get your money back on this pair you know

The banger boys would race anything, the editor of practical classics, matt wrights mint brown granada saloon was stolen and banger raced a year or so ago,and iv seen photos on a datsun forum of a mint bluebird ss coupe that was stolen and raced too.Its all about rarity on the day, some guys have no interest in weather the car is mint or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Here are cars which have been stolen and have ended up on Banger tracks:

    1972 Plymouth Wagon:

    Datsun 180 SSS coupe:

    photo26.jpg

Unaccounted for, with a high chance it ended up as abanger :( :

    Ford Granada MK1:

    P1010004.jpg
These are before and after pics of the same cars, not random pictures of what they might have looked like before they were raced,if you look into the raced datsun, you can see the blue paint...

    Who are these people?

I can understand people getting a bit of a laugh from a few Almeras and Ventos before they become tin cans anyway, but why wreck rare cars that have miraculously survived the crusher until now???!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

It doesnt happen every weekend, but occasionally crops up.Its such a pity to see cars that have obviously been minded getting wrecked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭granadamad

well deal more or less done on these two in england so by thhe time they are fit for racing they will extremely rare!! here are the two i'l be bringing out of UK later this year. The guy who owned them used to banger race and loved the mark 1 granada, he seems glad that the two are going to Ireland and back on the road. He has gotten sick of having them lying in the shed! Just my luck

They look tidy enough, well done. Looking forward to seeing some decent pictures of them when you have them sorted !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭granadamad

yea,he is going to send me some decent ones when he sells the other cars infront and give me better list of whats right and wrong with them. Not to bothered judging by the look of them it wont be anything to major for us to sort.

It'l be end of July before I get them home i reckon but will start a thread here and on EFI when i start into them
