Gloves for Deadlifts?

I'm finding my deadlift progress completely ruined by the fact that any time I lift anything over bodyweight, the bar is ripping my hands to shreds so I'm thinking it might be an idea to invest in a pair of weight-lifting gloves for this purpose.

I know it's a girly complaint but the strain on my hands is causing me to lose a fairly major part of my workout. As far as I can tell, chalk isn't really an option in WestWood.

    Any recommendations?

The bar is ripping your hands? Bit odd really, I'd've thought that the bar should stay stationary as you move through the motion, it'll be pressing into your hands alright but shouldn't be ripping them.

It could be that you're gripping the bar too high up in your hands (towards the wrist) and it moves down when you begin the pull. I did that for a while too and it hurt pretty bad, I then reread the section in Starting Strength on it and I realised I should grip more towards my fingers and the pain suddenly stopped!

I apologise if thats hard to understand, its the best I can come up with at the moment. I'll have a glance through SS when I get home and see what it says again.

EDIT: How much weight are you lifting btw?

    Gloves make it worse imo.

    3 solutions I reckon:

    Use straps
Get a stronger grip (or practise a hook grip though it takes a lot of practise supposedly)
Or be discreet with your chalk usage.

It could be how I'm gripping the bar alright. Will experiment again on my next deadlifting day. Anyone have the relevant extract of Starting Strength?

Really I only notice this above 90k, My max 3 set x 6/7 lifts on Deadlifts should be around 100k but I'm finding myself having to quit during the second set.

    get gloves.
no gain in mashing your hands really, and they wont take away from the exercise.

I always see advice against gloves, but I still like them, I know use very light grippy gloves, rubber coated on the palms and finger.

I got a torn callus on monkey bars a while ago and have filed them since. I got chalk in a shop that sounds like the great outdoors in town, opposite hector greys in town near arnotts, in the rock-climbing section. The chalk was cheap enough I think €5.50 for 110g which I think is good. It is powder though, I thinki some prefer a ball. They also sold "liquid chalk", it was just chalk and alcohol. I was thinking of making my own solution, might be more discrete for you "banned" gym-goers.

    here are some tips.

I would advise more grip strength exercises. Just hang from a chin bar with one arm, or do one hand chins, i.e. grip your wrist with one hand and do chins/pullups

The chalk I use is around 6 quid for 110 g, lasts me about 2 months. I get it in a hardware store it is "chalk for chalk line" and comes in a yellow container. I think it's for marking straight lines for various DIY jobs but works well for lifting too.

Do you know what substance it actually is? Gymnastic chalk is not just any old chalk, like blackboard chalk. It is magnesium carbonate or sulphate, or a mix, I think the stuff I got had a few other things in it.

The chalk you have will probably improve grip, the magnesium salts (it is really a salt) will also help with sweaty hands, and other chalks/salts might not.

If your stuff is the magnesium I would still sooner get the rock climbing stuff. It is a bit cheaper but also made for the purpose, there could well be some other chemicals in DIY stuff. Comes in a big tub and is really light, nice little clumps you can pick up and just rub in easily.

I have to try the dissolving method in alcohol, it would have to be strong though, like 90%+
