Lateral raises while kneeling on a swiss ball, really engages the core and burns your delts, killing two birds with one stone.

Squats and deads work your abs strongly.

Also, try the plank. See how long you can hold it for.

Go basic before you go advanced. The Plank and it's varients (front, side, one arm, one leg etc..) is the daddy.

Swiss ball crunches done slow and in control, add weight and a twist as and when your ready. Ensure you stretch right back.

Overhead work, especially single arm presses and carries will really stress the core and build all over srength.

Squats, especially front squats will strengthen the core, as will all deadlift varients, particularly single hand versions (front and side)

Getting more advanced we find Hanging leg raises and gorilla ups, russian twists, turkish get ups.

Then there's breath control, power breathing (there's crappy plastic jobbies in argos, or you can use your own teeth and tongue to provide resistance) and the Vacuum.

    Have fun

one not mentioned there is the cable woodchop.

deadlifts and squats are very good for the core.

and of course for really good abs you need a low body fat percentage ;)
