    I work 8am to 4.15pm and I only get a half hour for lunch, then a shitty 15min break for a cup o' tae. Shouldn't I get a full hour for me lunch??

    My shitty little 30min break can't be legal can it?

    You should get an hour for lunch (un paid) and a 15 minute break (paid) if you work 8 hours or more.

    9.30 to 6,half an hour break... thats it :(

    I work 8am to 4.30pm and I get 30 mins.

    And 10 mins in the morning.

    It's minimum 15 minute break every four and a quarter hours or 30 minutes every six hours.

    2pm to 12 midnight, one half hour break and a 20 minute one.
    it takes about 6 minutes to walk from the clock in machine to the nearest shop, add about 5 minutes waiting in queue to be served, 6 minutes to walk back, that leaves 3 minutes to eat/smoke/socialise with colleagues!

    Moved from after hours. If you think it's better suited in after hours then don't hesitate to throw it back.

    As you can see most people's break timetables aren't like this at all.... Is there a law being broken? I really need more time to relax and eat my lunch.

    If anyone mentions poor little yimjombo workin' the mines in 20hr shifts in south africa.... feck off please.

    It appears I wasn't entirely correct.
    Is there an entitlement to breaks during your working hours? Yes, the general rule is that you are entitled to a break of 15 minutes in a four and a half hour work period and a break of 30 minutes in a 6-hour work period. The 30-minute break can include the 15-minute break for four and a half hours work.
    There are exceptions to the general rule. For example, shop employees whose hours of work include the period from 11.30am to 2.30pm should not be required to work more than 6 hours without having a one-hour break which must commence between those hours. So, a shop employee due to work from 9am to 5pm should have a break of one hour before 3pm and this break should commence between 11.30am and 2.30pm. These break times cannot be included in a break at the end of the working day. There is no entitlement to payment for such breaks.
    An employer is exempt from providing the breaks where it is not possible due to exceptional circumstances or an emergency.

    So it looks like if you work in a shop then you get an hour.

    That's alright! 2hrs and 15mins in a 12hr shift. I get 3 x 10mins and 30mins in a 12hr shift. It's pretty pathetic especially the 10min ones are a joke. By the time you walk to the canteen half the break is over although I start my break now from the time I sit down and add an extra 5 mins. Couldn't really give a toss about them :)

    Work 8 to 5, two 15's and an hour.

    Last job was 9 to 5:30, one 30 minute break, and two 15's.

    Rather work that extra hour and get a full hour: I can relax and eat food, rather than shove it down (due to 15 minute queue), and run back to my desk.

    As I recall for anything up to 11h the minimum breaks are 30 min (paid) and 30 min lunch (unpaid). The 30 min break can be broken up differently but usually 15 min before lunch 15 after.

    Now since you don't do the 8.5 hours required for the second 15 min break your breaks are as far as I can see perfectly legal (was a while back since I was reading up on the law though so willing to be corrected).

    I'm in the Public Sector and work from 8am to 8.40pm.

    45 minutes for lunch and 30 minutes for evening tea.

    No 'tea breaks' in between.

    I'm on flexi time. Have to take a minimum of 30 mins but can take up to 2 hours as long as my hours balance out over the week.

  • Posts: 16,720 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    30 mins at lunch, which is often stretched out. But we're also encouraged to take breaks every now and again, so I take around a 15-20 min break in the morning and another one in the afternoon.

    And if I'm being really picky I'll take breaks every hour or two at the same time as the smokers to get some fresh air.

    4-10 and I get 10 minutes at six and half an hour at eight. More or less at eight depending how busy.

    9.30-5.30 and get an hour for lunch. We also technically get 2x15 minute breaks but no-one tends to take them, except for quick cigarette breaks.

    Completely flexible. As short or as long as I want, when I want. Normally I only take 20 or 30 minutes though.

    it's up to me how long I take for breaks and how many breaks I take.
    if(work.isDone())
    {
    takeRelaxingBreak();
    }
    else
    {
    getBackToWorkDammit();
    }

    ho ho, nerdy out but U get the point.

    Public sector - teaching.
    8.45 to 4.30
    35 minutes for lunch, but often end up with only 10 - very hard on the stomach to gobble gobble in that time, so most days I just leave it and don't bother with lunch at all.

    I work flexi-time in my place. We have to clock out for lunch and take a minimum of 30 minutes. I generally only take that 30 minutes because I try to work up enough extra time to take a day and a half off every month and losing extra time at lunchtime makes that tougher to do. Also get two 15 minute breaks in the morning and afternoon that we don't have to clock out for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,374 ✭✭✭Gone West

    I work 8.30 - 4 and take lunch whenever I want to really. I don't have to stay after 4 if I take a long break and I don't have to go cap in hand to the boss if I want to come in or leave late/early.
    Grab an hour (all lunch is paid) usually from 12.30-1.30 sometimes I might stay on lunch till 2.
    I could take a good few coffee breaks if I want as well.
    Not a biggie, once the work is getting done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,137 ✭✭✭Monkey61

    generally work 9.30-6 and get an hour for lunch and two twenty minute breaks. Usually stretch these to thirty minutes. This is in a bookshop in London. I couldn't believe the extra afternoon break.

    personally I'd rather not take any breaks and get out of the skanky place earlier!

    What I want to know is, do restaurants have different rules regarding breaks? Anyone I know in that industry seems to have ridiculously small breaks compared to the long hours.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 207 ✭✭AlexBM

    I work 9 till 6, and get an hour. I pop out for a smoke twice a day too, so add about ten minutes onto that. I was told when I started that there'd be a 15 minute break in the morning, but no joy so far - nobody takes it. Nobody else smokes either.

    I work 10 am to 4. 45 mins tea break between 10.45 am and 11.30 am. 2 hour lunch break between 12.30 and 2.30 pm. 30 min tea break between 3pm and 3.30 pm. Also occasional coffee breaks and office relief breaks thrown in.
    Average of 3 hours breaks per day. LOL

    I worked in a print shop last year and my hours were 8.30am to betweeen 5pm and 7pm depending on how busy we were and I could only take 10 minutes at 11am for a mug of coffee and 30 minutes maximum at 1pm.
    I barely had time to run to the supermarket 3 minutes away, Q up for a roll at the hot food counter during the busiest lunch-hour period, wait for it to be made then gollop it down before dashing back to my desk for work. Im pretty sure my conditions were illegal amonst many other things that happened in the workplace which I wont go into. There was one day were i worked from 8.30am to 9pm that night and still only got the 30 minutes break, i was in bits waking up for work at 7am the next morning.

    I work from 9-4 and get 30 mins but you can't really leave, not that I'm near anything.

    When I worked in residential care you would work 12 hour shifts with no breaks. You prepare lunch/dinner and then eat it with the people you're caring for. I found it hard not to get a break for the 12 hours, especially when you working in what might be called a high stress environment! I do love it though!

    Old job 6:51 per day .. and then you had a take a minimum of 30 min lunch but it could go up to 2 hours.. all on the flexi clock so lunch was unclocked time. Also had 15 min tea in the morning and 15 mins afternoon if you wanted.. Most people took 30 in the morning and none in the afternoon

    New place 7,5 hours per day + 30 min lunch and its flexible if you need it.. Dont need much more than 30 mins really, queue is usually only 5 mins at most... Dont take any other breaks really

    Haha,I think I know where you work.:D Great company (probably same company you work for), I used to work for last year had this arrangement.Basically you could come in between 8am and 10am and core hours were between 10am and 12pm.A minimum of 30 mins lunch had to be taken between 12pm and 2pm but this was more just an official practice and lunch would stretch out that full hour.Then anytime after 4pm you could go home once you had 7 and a quarter hours done but you could stay longer and work up flexi-leave up to a maximum of a day and a half off.Latest you could go home was 6 as to accomodate late starters.

    Used to come in at 8am and go home at 4:15 or 4:30 which built up 30 mins or 45 mins a day.Could take a half day on a Thursday,day off Friday or leave one or the other til Monday and make a long weekend.Also if you were tired,you could have a ly in til 9 and go in just before 10.Great system.

    You could also defer flexi-leave within reason and add it to your holidays.Why this system is not in more companies is beyond me.:confused:

    Flexi, but most likely 8-4 with 2 x 15 min breaks morning and afternoon (paid) and an hour lunch (unpaid). I knew I was back in with the civil service this Summer for a reason :)

    Recently took on a new job in a senior position and eventhough i am supposed to work 8hours a day i have ended up working 11-12hours some days ... Even on an 8hour day my break time is 30mins but their have been days when i wouldn't even have time for that and would work longer hours while only having the time to have a coffee here and there.

    12 hour straight shift (on yer feet). no break! an odd time one 20min break if they is the slightest possibility of time and then they moan at us to get back to it. Otherwise none. No rules,no laws, speak out and you've as good as asked for your p45

    I don't understand people who take this things lying down. Grow a pair and take your hour break, don't let them get away with mismanaging staff time.
