  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

No i dont know anyone else who plays this game except me
There might be a few people from the Gaming cafe i play in but it will be hard to find enough to start a tournament

Any ideas on how to announce the tourno to a broader audience than boards.ie ?

    thats great
Any friends of yours that want to play pixelburp ?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I know a couple that might be - they got into CoH not through me, but through a LAN organised by DCU gamessoc, so there's certainly Irish players out there (there's usually about 20 or so in the Dublin channel of CoH online, whatever that entails).

Well if u could spread the word around on the Dublin Channel that there will be a tourno in the middle on June that would be great
    Thanks

Im gonna post a topic up on the gamefaqs.com boards, see if any irish players are interested playing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

    Good idea
I might have a few players from Germany and Canada but it is not 100% confirmed
Do u have any preferences on the date?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 81,101 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

not particularly no whenever really :).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

Did u do that thing on gamefaqs.com yet ?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

How is it going to work exactly ? I mean you say it'll be through hamachi - so where is the base LAN gonna be from? Will that LAN be able to handle many outside connections coming in without it falling over?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭Seifer

I'm interested. Details sound sketchy but I'll play if it happens.
As an aside, where do most Irish CoH players hang out? I've dropped by the Dublin channel a few times but it's always quite. I usually hang out in the playpen that is the gamereplays.org channel.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Yeah, I hang out in Dublin, which never raises a whisper, or the gamereplays.org one which is as you say can be a playpen. Suppose we're all just shy chaps in Ireland ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

well if there are technical difficulties then we will just play online as normal in a sort of tournament with the games being password protected

I think i will run a trial before the tournament to test the conditions

Are there any preferences as to if it should be a 2 vs 2 or a 1 vs 1

I'll play, I haven't played Coh in ages so you can count me as a noob !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

We could use all the people we can get and we all have to learn some way

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Some concrete details would help sell the idea?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

The only details that i have at the moment is that it will be on in the middle of June and that we need 16 people
We will use Hamachi to create a virtual lan and people from around the world will be playing

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 81,101 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

well I posted it on gamefaqs jaxion, now we play the waiting game :pac:,sorry it took me so long,I've been quite busy last few days :-l.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 81,101 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

    sure will

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Well I'm still up for the tourney. Though some ground rules will also be needed, particularly to counter people trying to drophack or use exploits.

Or Panzer Elite grenadier spam grr

or a panzercheck (excuse the spelling :o ) spam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭Pyr0

I'll have to catch on to these exploits so I know whats going on !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭Seifer

If it's a friendly boards / Irish tournament I'd really hope that no one is gonna be drop hacking.
And spamming of any kind, with anything, is not an exploit so you'll just have to deal with it if it happens.

I be up for a 1v1 tournament in COH as well.

As for drop-hacking everone should save there replays. In the event of a drop during a close game the game can be replayed unless its clear that one of the players was gonna loose and it was the loosing player who dropped. In the event of a disupte we can view the replays. If its determined someone dropped hacked on purpose they get thrown out of the tournament.

As for rules it normally works like this in most tournaments for COH.

Best of 3 games. Victory Point games. Each side has to play as either one of the two Allied and Axis Armys in the first two games. If one player wins the first 2 games he is into the next round.

If each player wins one of the first 2 games the game is decided on the third match. The player with the highest amout of VP's left over from the first 2 games gets to choose his faction for the third round.

Maps should be Angoville, Semois, Beaux Lowlands, Wrecked Train, Langres and maybe Sturzdorf.

    Rules
VP games (each player records his VP's after the end of each game)
    Fixed Starting Locations.
Each player saves the replays of his games.

    Hope this helps.

Sounds good to me (though Semois / Sturzdorf + British == instant loss :D)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

thanks for the input Azza I completely agree with those rules and the maps seem to be ok

The only problem is the amount of people we need it will have to be around 16 / 32 for it to be a successful tournament so start telling all ur friends

the date for the tournament will be the 21st June if that suits everybody (its a saturday)

Yeah I can probably get 2 more players.

Semois and Sturzdorf suit Wehr more but whoever starts in the north in Sturz has big advantage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

    Thats very true Azza
the best map and probably the most unbias one would be Angoville

Will it be standard or high starting resources

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 81,101 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

I think it should be high resources anyway, get straight into the action :pac:

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

No! Have Standard resources, high resources leaves things too open to spammy attacks, be it US Bar spam, Panzer Elite PG / Scout Car spam or whatever. Lets at least try and maintain some level of tactical thinking!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 81,101 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

hmmm, your right it probbly would turn into a spam fest,id better start practising playing against the computer so with low resources as I normally play with high.

Well standard resources forces you to be more tactical and thoughtful about how you upgrade your troops or how you tech up. If we wanna keep this boards.ie friendly, then it should remain nicely balanced!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭Seifer

If you're going to practice then why not do it against humans?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 81,101 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

Sometimes i cant connect to a game :( and recently I have'nt been able to connect at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭uglyjohn

oh thank god! i thought it was just me.....i was going to ask if anyone else was having the same problem but i wasnt aresed getting a chorus of "check your firewall, install drivers, patch to 1.343434359495........"

i can login to my profile, then when i try and join a game i cant connect and get logged out of the profile.

in terms of online play the hardest thing i found was not having time to pause and look around maps to figure out tactics and micro my units....all my games were on maps i hadnt played before and were very hectic.
i find human players are more imaginative than the expert AI but less able to multi-task and use all their units abilities

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 81,101 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

Is there any other way to play online without using relic online?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Did you try the various forums? Could be a known problem other people have experienced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭uglyjohn

no, i figured it would just fix itself in a few days so i played medieval for a bit instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

If u want to email them the address is eursupport@thq.com

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

you'd be safer looking at the technical support forums on the official site or somewhere like gamereplays.org. It's probably something very small that needs changing.

CoH is the first rts that I really played properly and online. It becomes easier with practice to manage all your stuff, or at least more of your stuff. You'll be amazed at how uncompetitive you find the AI after a bit of online play.
