Just after finishing this.. a truly frightening film!

Wouldn't have even thought of watching it, but after many recommendations from people, I decided it must be worthwhile. And I'm glad I did watch it.

The film had it's flaws - a bit too many jump-out-of-your-seat moments but the final 10 minutes or so
    in the penthouse
more than made up for it, and also the obligatory
"turn on the light" meant watch for a horrific character suddenly appear in the background
    .

But it's definitely one of the more exciting and original horrors in recent years.. seek it out if you haven't already. And if you have seen it, opinions / reactions etc.

And of course, the obligatory US remake Quarantine starring Jennifer Carpenter (who 'Dexter' fans will know as playing Deb) is already in the can and due for release just in time for Halloween. And the first thing that struck me with the trailer it appears (for the most of it) to be shot-for-shot remake!

Just after watching the Quarantine trailer again.. and apart from the opening prologue
explaining about them finding the tape
, everything else in the trailer is lifted DIRECTLY from [rec].
From Angela's scare when they break open the door behind her, to the first encounter with the old woman to the night-vision image of "the mutation" to the closing slot of the trailer (which well.. obviously spoils the film completely!)

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this film, although I'm probably going to have to wait for a DVD release.

Nope.. it's released May 28th in Spain.. but no doubt a few months before it's released here.

And I shouldn't really say where I saw it! ;)

It's not officially as far as I know. It's similar in style but the camera is held by a professional and not a bumbling f*ckwit.. so it's slightly less shaky (to a point anyways).

EDIT: According to Amazon.co.uk, it'll be released here August 4th.

I loved this film, went to see it again when it got its official release and it still had the desired effect...especially the last ten minutes or so.

    Great stuff:D

I watched this last night. Aside from a few minor issues I thought it was quite good. The camcorder effect is really getting on my nerves now and has worn itself out as a gimmick. Though here camera work was well done and never got to the stage where it was blurry or where I couldn't make certain things out. The violence and gore was nicely used without going over the top and the tension and pacing were good. The aforementioned final scene was brilliant.

    A few things though:
OK so the girl/monster in the penthouse was possessed or something? It was the cause of the disease? What about the dog? The little girl's dog was brought to the vet and was a carrier. Did the monster in the penthouse infect the dog which in turn infected everyone else?
Also when they entered the penthouse and Pablo had a look up in the attic was the thing hiding up there the same monster that killed them? It looked different to me.

Still not quite sure why this wasn't released yet. Was on the cineworld site for ages for an April release and when the day rolled around it just disappeared.

Sorry for bumping this thread but I just watched REC and I thought it was brilliant. My nerves were in shreds for the last 10 minutes. Its been a long time since I let out a 'Oh Jesus' at a movie so im sorta glad I didnt watch this in the cinema cos I would have made a right show of myself :D

What else would people here compare it to, if it is comparable to something else?

Rented this out the other night and thought it was one of the most intense horrors in years. Really edge of your seat stuff. Didn't like the handheld style in Cloverfield or Diary of the Dead (felt they were both just standard, clichéd films with a gimmick) but this really does work, and the whole thing just feels like it never lets up. A zombie movie at heart, but this is the genre at its best.

For whoever asked what its like, I'd say it is like Blair Witch meets Night of the Living Dead.

    Agreed..

The only film I thought could have topped this in my mind was 'The Orphanage'.. but I watched it last weekend, and that was blander than bland. Had some good ideas but completely squandered in a weak second half to the film.

[rec] was just fantastic from start to finish.. especially in it's later stages.

Im glad people are giving this the recognition it deserves, it truly had me terrified in the cinema.

great movie, i hope the two lads can top it with their next venture.

Is this out for sale on R2 yet? I wouldn't mind ordering a R1, but if I can stroll into HMV and get it all the better. Been wanting to see it for a while.

Edit: D'oh, read the whole thread dummy.

Yeah I really didn't get the hype over the Oprhanage either. A good story, but didn't really consider it a good horror film.

But I think Rec is like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre: just an endless adrenaline rush with an enemy that never lets up, and creates a real feeling of uncomfortableness and terror. Which is more than can be said of a helluva lot of recent attempts at horror.

I normally hate Horrors but anything Basq usually recommends is gold so I gave this a go.

While I was, erm, waiting for the girlfriend to go to the DVD store up the road and buy it (it took her about 30 mins) I did some research on the reviews without ruining the film for me. I think this was the mistake. I was expecting those last ten mins to blow my mind from what Id read about it but, whilst scary, I was expecting the
twist to end all twists and it didnt come.

What you do get in a brisk 75 minutes is essentially a very good
    zombie movie
, some very clever sound design, camera angles that will scare the sh*te outta ya at times and a babe lead actress. All in Spanish with subtitles.

If that sounds like your bag then its a quick horror you'll enjoy.

    7/10

Not a bad film though I don't think it's as good as it made out. The last few minutes were genuinely horrible though, very simplistic but immensely disturbing. Got a huge poster for Quarantine yesterday actually, it looks identical to the box of [rec] - they really made no effort with this one.

If you think that looks identical, check out the trailer for 'Quarantine'... looks like a shot-for-shot remake! :(

They didn't even change the main character's name.. Ángela has became Angela! :D

I think I saw a german shepard attacking somebody, don't remember that from the original

Oh man that was intense, I was hiding behind the pillow for the last 10 minutes, very good intense horror movie, I'm not even going to bother with the US remake, I've lived in Spain in some of those multi-floor apartments and in the dead of night they can freak u out as u hear noises coming from all over the place, think I'd have booked into a hotel If I had seen this in a spanish cinema rather then go back to an apartment.
Great movie, best horror I've seen in a long time, and to me that means that I can bearly watch the screen.
Of And this is scary not like the waste of space that was Blair Witch.

10 out of 10 in the horror stakes for this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,295 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Glad to see you enjoyed it Snake.

It is definitely one of the intense scary films I've seen in recent years.. in that when the scares come, they come big and often.

Might actually re-watch it tomorrow night.

EDIT: A remake is planned by the same directors / writers. Poster below:

    rec-2.jpg

No release date as of yet.. but sometime in 2009 apparently!

I said let 'REC' be.. no sequel required!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,573 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

yeah Basq, just watched the US remake trailer and don't know why they ruin the film by showing key spoilers.
Now just to convince some of my friends to watch it, which will be hard as once u say its in Spanish they get put off and won't watch it.
mmmm so arethey making a follow up or just remaking it. Has to be a follow up or a prequel. Just wondering where they could take the story.
But damn I'm still buzzing after watching it, had to think twice about going down stairs for a glass of water as had all the lights off!

What's unforgiving about the US remake trailer is that
that they show that chilling closing shot in the trailer - I know you don't know it's the closing shot unless you've seen it but it still is a bit unforgivable!
Now just to convince some of my friends to watch it, which will be hard as once u say its in Spanish they get put off and won't watch it.
Tried to convince a friend of mine to watch it.. he enjoy horror films but I've been raving for him to watch it for the past month and he keeps putting it off but got a text off earlier saying he was watching it tonight so here's hoping..
mmmm so arethey making a follow up or just remaking it. Has to be a follow up or a prequel. Just wondering where they could take the story.
There's no real information on it online yet.. no synopsis or anything. I know that Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza (who wrote and directed it) wanted to have the sequel out prior to the release of 'Quarantine' but that's not looking likely at this stage.
But damn I'm still buzzing after watching it, had to think twice about going down stairs for a glass of water as had all the lights off!
I was in a similar type of state after I watched it.. I wrote the original post in this thread just after watching it close to 3am in the morning in my pitch dark top-floor apartment! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,573 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

Glad I'm not the only one Basq :D the great thing that makes the last 10 minutes work for me is
that all of the time your thinking that its some kind of mutant rabies, then they get to the penthouse and the movie turns into a kind of exorcist possession movie, so u know there is something really bad up in the attic and the way they pan the camera around you know there is something horrible up there but u can't look away until its to late:eek:

This type of Horror movie is rare these days

I watched rec last night, and it's a good owl horror flick alrite. Fair play to you Basquille I hadn't heard of the movie before you posted about it.

It's like a cross between 28 days and the Blair Witch Project

Rather than start a new thread Im just going to bump this one.
Watched this movie Thursday night and 1 word immediately springs to mind.

    CACK.

For me a horror movie can be made up of a couple of seperate entities to be entertaining
    1.Scares
    2.Tension
    3.Gore

    Rec had
    1.1,possibly 2 scares,and that was it.
2.Tension.Similar to scares but IMO this was devoid of tension for most of the movie.
    3.Little or none.

I had heard nothing but positive things about this movie from casual horror fans and hard core gore fiends alike but I was sooooo let down by it.I will revisit it in a few months but for now it gets a resounding MEH from me.
    4/10

I feel confident in saying that your opinion is wrong. [Rec] was possibly one of the most tense films I have ever seen.

I've had this movie for a couple of months and i've just finished watching it there.

I don't really scare easily but this was ****ing terrifying!!!

Agreed, couldn't believe that made it into the trailer!!

The U.S remake looks very 'hollywood', i'm sure it will be a big success at the box office which will lead the the original becoming a 'cult' classic.

Some things i didn't like about the movie were...
When the little girl initially goes nuts, seemed kind of silly really.
, however that was saved by when
they encounter her in the apartment soon after, awesome stuff!
    .

I also wasn't crazy on the
CGI'd zombie woman in the penthouse.
    or the luck with
conveniently choosing the right key for the penthouse first time round.
    and a babe lead actress.

    Oh hell yeah!!

I also wasn't crazy on the
CGI'd zombie woman in the penthouse.
That wasn't CGI though, that was actor Javier Botet under heavy makeup. Check out the special features on the DVD or See here. Quite honestly, that was the part that scared the crap out of me the most.

Lets just say I had some trouble sleeping that night :(
