Hey all - long time lurker here - I love my porridge in the mornings but I find that as the days get warmer I cant stomach porridge first thing - I feel too hot afterwards. Any good alternatives to porridge that doesnt involve too much effort?

    Jamie Oliver's Pukkola

    Ingredients:
8 large handfuls of organic porridge oats 2 large handfuls of oat bran 1 handful of natural dried apricots 1 handful of chopped dried dates 1 handful of chopped walnuts 1 handful of chopped or almonds or Brazil nuts Soya, oat, rice or nut milk 1 crunchy organic apple per person

    Preparation:
Mix all ingredients together in a large airtight container. This can keep for a couple of months in a cool place. Ideally the night before, althoug h this can be done on the morning if you forget, cover as many bowlfuls as you need with your choice of milk and the apple grated. To serve you can add a banana, some berries, a dollop of live yoghurt, or more milk to taste. Make about a weeks worth working on smaller rather than larger visual portion sizes - it's very filling!

    Yu-hum!

Edit: Obviously you can change this around to suit your nutritional needs.

Oatcakes. Tescos do a good value one with no added sugar. Have them with a smear of peanut butter or slice of cheese if you want a protein hit too.

Ooo good idea - I would never have thought of them! I will pick some up in Tescos today

Museli's a reasonable alternative (I love the Hi-8 one). It's just a bit higher in calories.

Uncooked oats with milk are pretty nice too.

Exactly - there is no rule that says they must be cooked!
Try using natural yoghurt instead of milk too - works best with the larger cut oats.

This is one I use in the summer, I had it up in another thread recently, I'll put it here too.

Soap the oats over-night in apple juice in the fridge. Then in the morning, add a spoon of natural yoghurt with some grated apple, serve cold. You can also add any berries or other fruit you have in the fridge. It's very tasty.

I always eat porridge cold as A) couldn't be arsed cooking it B) I hate the taste of warm milk and C) I think it tastes nicer anyway this way.

I think porridge is useless for breakfast. I eat king prawns or cod with cauliflower rye bread and cottage cheese and some fruit like a pear or strawberries. It always puts me in a good mood. If I just eat porridge I'm hungry an hour later.

musli is a good alternative, or just normal cereal, the cold milk is v refreshing, and you can put yummy fruits and stuff in it.

Most of the no added sugar ones are pretty decent. A quick look at the ingredients list will give you most of the information you need.

The lifeforce one is really good (plenty of fruit and plenty of nuts), it's just a tad expensive compared to the Hi-8.

Museli is just oats with fruit & nuts in it. You can get dried fruit in health stores and make your own custom type. Or use fresh whole fruit to bulk it up more. Or frozen fruits.

I soak oats in milk with a little maple syrup overnight, I like it to be very cold in the summer.

someone posted a recipe on a similar thread last year.
Think it might have been in the fitness forum
Tried searching for it a while back but couldn't find it.

    but it was like this:

Dissolve some honey in apple juice in a saucepan then pour over the porridge flakes spread thinly on a baking tray and bake in an oven.

can't remember the amounts, temps, time. sorry. But its not complicated just throw it all together and bake till golden and crunchy
I made a big batch last summer and had it with fresh fruit and yoghurt in the mornings, its really good. A great alternative to hot porridge.

Odlums have a new product - oat flakes with seeds and dried fruit. I mix some spelt puffs in too to give it more bite and some cold milk. It's delicious.

In the summer I stick the porridge in the mircowave before I shower and by the time I'd ready to leave for work I eat it with a sliced banana and its nice and luke warm (not hot or cold...)

    Works for me !

Do you mean these mixes ?
If they can just be eaten with regular Supermilk cold, I'll be tempted.
