Home Gym vs Gym Gym

Hey everyone, i'm 23 years old, 5'9, about 9 and a bit stone. I play rugby but as you can imagine im easily thrown around the pitch and my takles act more as those little rumble strips that dont really slow you down at all rather than a proper rip out the underneath of your car if you go over it too fast speed bump.

My goal for the summer is to get properly fit and also put on a a bit of weight and muscle. Not going for the bodybuilder look or mass, just want to be able to hold my own out on the *cough*J4*cough* rugby pitch.

So I was saying to a friend of mine that I was planning on rejoining the gym soon and he told me that I might get better results doing a few weights and running/cycling for the fitness and that he'd help me out with what I needed to be doing?

So was wondering what peoples views are with regards to Gyms vs. Home set ups. for the price of my gym membership I could invest in a nice little bench and set it up in my garage? Any advantages/ disadvantages of one over the other?

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys

You could get a squat rack, a bench, a pull up bar and a decent amount of weights for under 400 euro.

You could do squats and deadlifts then, and benching. You'd get a full body workout and you'd increase your strenght if you stick at it!

And for fitness you could do HIIT, running would be good. Jog for 2 minutes, then sprint your heart out for 1 minute. Repeat five or so times and feel the burn!

Home gyms are cost-happy, but you can get really lazy with them

I personally make sure i go to the gym cos if I dont i feel like im wastin money. And Im not stuck with anything i wont use as my strength progresses

agreed with the other lads I think I priced a basic set up on another thread and it came in at around €500.

But anyway back to the OP. OP you are the only one who can decide which would work better home gym or gym gym. I personally do both because if it just came to do home gyming I would get lazy and I would also miss the inner competitiveness I get from seeing other people lift bigger then me.

What you will probably be looking to do is build up your strength and just take what ever extra mass comes with that. Emphasis would be put on big compound movements like squat, deadlift and bench, and then eating BIG with lots of protein in your diet. Don't worry no matter what you do your not going to look like a bodybuilder as it takes years of dedicated training to come near to achieving that sort of look but the principle of what they want to do is put on mass and is this not your goal? Also from the sound of it I doubt your friend really knows what he is talking about.

Does your garage have any beams that you can do chinups from? Weighted chins ups are a great exercise. A dipping belt for add the weight costs around 30 euro

And if you were to get an Olympic weight set (~200 euro from Irish lifting) you could do deadlifts, cleans, overhead presses etc. in your garage. There are lots of other things you can do as well with just a bar and weights and a few bits and pieces. A bench would be good too but for safety/comfort when benching on your own you're probably looking at needing a power cage as well which takes up space and costs ~350 for a basic one. Once you have the cage though you can do pretty much every free weight exercise and it'll be a matter of prioritising which ones you want to do.

Was actually looking at these sets yesterday and they're up to €250 now which is a pity - bit steep for me but look like an excellent set.

Has the price of cast iron gone up, I just checked VJS as well, 349 quid for a 140 kg York Olympic set! That used to be 280 and they also had an Olympus brand set for 220.

Argos are selling a 140 kg set for 285.
