Outdoor v Indoor CV work

    Hi,
    I normally do CV on the T/Mill for 30-40 mins @ an avergare HR of 70%. Because of the good weather I decided to use the grass pitches in the local park today. I could only manage 20 mins,m which included no more than a light jog and 2-5 mins of walking. Same as when I tried this before, I felt it way harder than the T/Mill and when I checked my HR monitor the average HR was 82% of my max HR. Is a HR of 82% of MHR too high for fat loss & gen fitness and if so how can I bring it down? Do others find it much more difficult to control HR when actually running or cycling compared to simulators used in the gym?

    Your HR is not too high for general fitness. And your HR can vary under similar effort due to a whole host of factors. And running outside will always be more taxing since you're actually running, rather than a tread mill which completes the work phase of running for you.

    While not really answering your question this is why I don't like HRM. Analyse/Paralyse. Maybe just get out and enjoy the weather and listen to your body and start to get a feel for how you feel yourself. Its not too often we get weather like this so get out of the stuffy gym and enjoy the blue skies and the fact that you can wear shorts/vest/tee shirt/shades (some of the lads at training last night even had their tops off:). Slowcoach ran a 2mile race on monday and averaged 105% of his max HR with an average of 178 throughout but he finished and was 191 at the end. If he listened to his HRM he should be dead with bits of slowcoach splattered all over Glasnevin.

    I don't know how anybody could run on a threadmill with weather like this. To be honest, I couldn't be bothered going to the gym with the weather like this. I take the opportunity to enjoy other activities such as cycling, tennis, swimming, football, basketball, walking etc. The winter is long enough to be stuck in a gym.
    I hope this continues - game of tennis at the weekend, Cycling last night, football tonight..

    yeah, open water swimming for me last night and sea kayaking tonight. Sure beats the pool and conceptII rower.

    OP, stick with the outdoor work, it will get easier.

    I found it very hard at the start to pace myself, but now I feel I've found my groove and I've gone beyond my expectations.

    Once you get into it, you won't be able to look at a treadmill again!
