Restricted Internet Access

I'm in work and the internet is restricted. The only sites that I can access are eircom.ie, boards.ie, and rte.ie. The rest of the internet seems to be blocked/restricted. I really want to be able to go to gmail and the like so I was wondering if anyone knows how to get around this in order to be able to view sites.

    Thanks

Google how to use proxy. But if your IT dept is worth its salt they are blocked too.
Most likely they have OKd those you can access and just blocked everything else. Actually, prob not - then they'd have blocked boards too.

    why are boards allowed
your it guys must be here somewhere

    Be creative with proxy sites.

Typing in Proxy will result in obvious sites which your IT will almost certainly have blocked.

Trying different keywords can work wonders.

Subscribe to boards and you can get a bmail.ie address, it's a win/win situation! :pac:

Speak to your IT admin to see if something can be worked out. If you try to go behind their backs, you might be risking disciplinary action.

    Internet Access - Access Restricted

INTERNET USAGE IS MONITORED AND LOGGED.

YOU HAVE RESTRICTED ACCESS TO THE INTERNET

Access to sites categorised as "Search Engines and Portals;Information Technology" is restricted.

These sites may allow you to view blocked sites but they are very obvious in proxy logs!
Don't think they make your surfing anonymous either. They are trivial to intercept with the right tools; even if they use SSL!

Could you just do your job instead?

Sometimes I wish my job would block boards. I'd get a lot more done. :(

Boards isn't blocked because of the Ireland Off Line and Broadband forums I suspect. The people in charge of it aren't likely to be lenient either without approval in triplicate from the line manager, line manager's manager, line manager's manager's... well, you get the idea.

you could probably get a copy of your emails forwarded to your work email address. Gmail lets you do that, I think. But not sure about your work email... just an idea.

IT will probably catch you out if you use one of those proxy bypass sites. Not worth the bother imo.

    It's definitely blocked.

If the OP really needs to access webmail, set up a cheap domain + email hosting with Hosting365. The URL for the web access will be an IP address that is not blocked. Forward any other blocked email accounts to this address.

This won't work though if they are now using a whitelist.

For accessing Gmail u can go to this link n it will work 4 sure.

    https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3Fhl%3Den%26tab%3Dwm%26nsr%3D1%26ui%3Dhtml%26zy%3Dl&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&hl=en

Now when u put ur id n pass in gmail if it says it is blocked again just put "s" without the "" in ur address bar where it says http:// instead it should be https://

This should work for every one.

Accessing Gmail and/or forwarding email outside of the Company is most likely a breach of the policy and can GET YOU FIRED.....

    I'd say ask your Admin/BOFH nicely {i.e. Create of Beer, Bottle of Wodka. Whiskey, etc}

It won't work - it ultimately goes to mail.google.com which is blocked for the OP - even the google spreadsheets are blocked there.

Bribing won't work :( For a start they are in a different building altogether unless the OP is in the same IT unit, and they are very by the book.

That UltraReach atmmusa suggested may work though, unless the proxies themselves are also blocked by websense.

While I don't agree with blocking "non-work" sites arbitrarily (this is not an IT function), allowing webmail access is a security hole.

In a previous job many sites were blocked too, anything with a message board, webmail etc etc. For some reason i was able to get around it by just typing in the site ip address rather than the domain.

Same, for most sites anyway (gmail still doesn't work), but even boards is blocked but simply replacing www.boards.ie with www-2.boards.ie works wonders. In fact anything.boards.ie should work.

JEEEZE - all that energy into trying to get around what are obviously very necessary rules !

Not a care about your companies data security or intellectual property.

If you tried any of the silly suggestions put forward in previous posts in my company ..I would be suggesting you should pursue a career elsewhere.

A peice of good advice...just do your work!!!

Now why the fcuk wasn't Boards banned

Deciding what sites are OK should not be an IT function, apart from ones that are a danger to the network. Newsgroups, messageboards and blogs are all banned - places where many people go to do legitimate research for work. If you want to get one unbanned in the OP's company, then they tend to do it by a site by site basis, which is pretty useless when you are going through search results and need to see any number of blocked sites.

And I answered why boards.ie isn't banned for the OP.

I don't see any reason why Gmail should be blocked. Its an email site, fair enough it has instant messaging features but your IT department can monitor this so you can't do it TOO much. Thats pretty silly.

Because webmail sites are an obvious security hole. I'm sure gmail has some good anti-virus stuff in place, but it's one of the few valid types of site to block.

It's not just the chat - webmail is a risk in its own right because of attachments.

In my work all sites are blocked except specific ones which are allowed. These are added manually. Very annoying!

    eoin_s wrote: »

It's likely that the IT policy is fairly strict in OP's company -- they don't want employees looking at non-work content on company time -- costing them time and money. Personal email could suck hours of time every day during which you're supposed to be working.

The other angle is that they want to protect their IP (Intellectual Property) and having webmail available makes stealing the information a whole lot easier -- similar reason why some companies won't have any cd-burners in their machines.

OP either talk to you IT admin if you need access it for work otherwise it's likely to be tough sh!t. Some of the older more establish firms have policies like this in place - civil service, insurance companies, banks etc.

I know one office where there is no internet access on the main network, so if you want internet you have to plug in to the phone line and use a dial up connection, they even have individual phone lines for people to do this!

I often encounter this limited internet crap when working in a client's office, we just bring our own laptops and a 3g usb modem thingy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 818 ✭✭✭Cormic

My company has just made the decision to unlock a lot of previously banned sites. They are doing it for "ethical" reasons and against IT's recommendation.

Users compain that they should be treated like adults but then some dipso decides to download a 4GB DVD image and takes down our internet connection.

It will probably bite us on the a$$ and I am sure I will end up cleaning up the mess.
