Getting rid of the beer belly

    I'm just wondering what is the best way to rid myself of the "beer belly"? I'm 30 years old & recently went back to playing GAA after a good few years out. Is there a exercise routine that I can do or is iy all in my diet. All inputs will be gladly taken on board!

    You'll need a good diet, and a good exercise programme!


    Whats your current diet?
    How often do you play GAA now?
    Are you a member of a gym??

    Diet is the place to start.

    Cut out the junk. No chips, booze, take-aways, sweets. If you are already doing that, then cut down on processed and refined carbs. A very easy way to do this is to take your lunchtime sandwich, eat your normal filling, but instead of bread, put it on a huge green salad. At dinner, replace your usual rice/pasta/spuds with a big serving of a green vegetable like broccoli or cauliflower or spinach.

    I'm training 2 nights a week with a game at the weekend. Diet isn't too bad but could be worse. I'm a member of a gym but haven't gone in a while but am planning to go on days I don't have football. I was told by someone that doing a 5k run every day is a good way of loosing the weight & getting fitness level up. Is there any truth is that or do I need to do more?

    I would highly recommend lifting heavy weights to shift fat. I imagine you get enough cardio in from GAA.

    You could run 5k a day, but as mentioned you can get all your cardio and fitness work in from your GAA training. On your non-GAA days go to the gym and lift heavy weights - learn how to squat, bench press and deadlift correctly and then start to build up in the weights you are lifting.

    Weight training will change your body shape in ways cardio could only dream of doing - give it a week or two and you'll see what I'm talking bout!

    Depends on what way you want your body to be afterwards...if you want to put on muscle (prob if your playing GAA) then you will need to lift weights. If you dont then running is probably the best way to lose weight. If you were to run 5km every day & GAA training, eat as normal, then you will see the weight fall off.

    Mix in some sit ups and the beer belly will be ancient history :)

    agree about the weights, sit ups and diet (espec alcohol) - not the 5km runs though

    you really don't need to hit the gym to lose the belly. diet and sit ups. lots of stretching to increase flexibility

    as for those 5km runs - why would you do that? go out onto a pitch and do some sprints - good long ones, decreasing the recovery time during the session. that is what you need for gaelic football. not running 5km at medium pace. you can do jogging as well to warm up - bring a ball to practice soloing

    The amount of difference will depend on your body type, but if you are working hard, lifting heavy and doing it two-three times a week, you will see progress within a couple of weeks.

    Eh... no. 5km's would do a lot more for the belly than a million situps.

    In order to loose the belly --> diet, heavy weights, some cardio.

    Don't bother with sit ups, eat clean and lift heavy in good form.
    Keep it simple, dips chins squats deads. When you build your strength up do over head squats. Stay away from machines

    He can get that from the squats and deadlifts, another good reason to start lifting!

    No he won't
    ....squats deads. When you build your strength up do over head squats.
