Just wondering what are peoples favourite Pixies songs?

I was talking to somebody lately and they said their favourite song was Gouge Away on Doolittle. Thought it was kind of a funny choice. I wouldnt have pegged it as a real stand out track.

My own favourite is The Happening from Bosanova.

'I might just go and say hello............'

Gouge Away is mine. Its a pretty hard choice but that just shades it over Monkey Gone To Heaven or Tame.

I'd have to say Hey off doolittle, it was my favourite from years ago. Also love gigantic as well but thats my own personal Kim Deal thing i think.

Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons, and most of the Trompe le Monde stuff

This is a toughie and mine definitely changes depending on the mood I'm in but I reckon "where is my mind" is the one for me.

    Or maybe "Hey",

    No wait "Wave of Mutilation"

    Dammit I can't choose........

Can I say all of them?

The second I saw this thread title I was thinking of the happening, such a great song. Other favourites would have to be Bird dream of olympus mons and Ed is dead

    Velouria, probably.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Morgans

Velouria and Alec Eifell get honourable mentions but the guitar in Where is My Mind? is a work of art.

My Top 5 (coz I can't pick just one!!):
    Debaser
    River Euphrates (Surfer Rosa version)

Probably the UK Surf version of Wave of Mutilation and Caribou. Or Velouria. Or Here Comes Your Man. Or...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 420 ✭✭KrazeeEyezKilla

Bird Dream of Olympus Mons & Letter to Menphis is probably the best back to back pair of songs on any of their albums.

Thnaks for all your posts. I'm totally f&cked. love the pixies. I'm making a vain glorious departure from this thread. Still not inpressed by gouge away. I'm in banjo heaven i.e. banjaxxed.

i can't actually make a choice down to 1 song, not possible. i love that band way too much, they were outstanding.

  • Moderators Posts: 51,917 ✭✭✭✭Delirium

Would be a tie between debaser and gouge away.

If you can read this, you're too close!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,397 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

it's impossible to pick just one song.

    wave of mutilation
    velouria
    hey
    gigantic
    where is my mind

it depends on the mood i'm in really

Well it was actually one of the first songs to come into my head when I read the thread title.

Can't limit it to just one, so aside from the obvious (Where Is My Mind?, Debaser, Gigantic) and the aforementioned Gouge Away, I would say:

    - Crackity Jones (quality gritty desert/Mexican border cut. Love how a Boston band can sound so authentically West Coast)
    - Alec Eiffel (gorgeously catchy)
    - Digging For Fire (as Alec Eiffel)
    - Velouria (a thing of beauty)
    - Head On (far better than the Mary Chain original)

Pixies songs are like your children -- you love them all equally.

But as with every family, the parents secretly have a favourite. And its name is Caribou.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,542 ✭✭✭Captain Darling

    The Happening.

they got a ranch they call
    number fifty-one
they got a ranch they call
    number fifty-one
    can't see it all
    'less your flying by
    just sitting there square
    baking in the sun
    beneath the sky

    they're gonna put it down
    right on the strip
    they're gonna put it down
    on the Vegas strip
    they're gonna put it down
    and step outside
    into the lights
    right outta that ship
    saying Hi!

i was driving doing nothing on the shores of Great Salt Lake
when they put it on the air i put it in the hammer lane
i soon forgot myself and i forgot about the brake
i forgot all laws and i forgot about the rain
they were talking on the 9 and all across the amy band
across the road they were turning around and headed south with me
it got so crowded on the road i started driving in the sand
my head was feeling scared but my heart was feeling free
the desert turned to mud it seems that everybody heard
everybody was remembering to forget they had the chills
then i heard the voices on a broadcast from up on the bird
they were getting interviewed by some Goodman whose name was Bill
i'm almost there to Vegas where they're puttin' on a show
they've come so far i've lived this long at least i must just go and say
    hello........

    "Monkey Gone to Heaven" please!

Oh and I love Frank Black's "Better Pray for the Girls" which is about an episode of the Powerpuff Girls and references Mojo Jojo.

Debaser was the 1st Pixies song I heard and still gets me every time... 5 seconds is all it takes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,277 ✭✭✭mehfesto

Manta Ray! Feckin' kick ass that one.

    Other than that
    -Hey
    -Into the White
    -Mr. Grieves.

Also, while Im on it, if anyone knows where I can get the live recording of the Landsdown gig a few years back on cd/download, can you PM me? I've been looking for it, but only found it on some well dodgy websites. Cheers.

I think debaser has to be my favourite, quite tough to pick though. I remember a year or two ago absolutely loving a live version of one of their songs that was a bit different- not sure what it was now though.

    :pac:

Ok, all of the obvious ones mentioned here already (Debaser sprang to mind) but I propose I've Been Tired from Come on Pilgrim. They're just too hard to fault....

    Carib-ouuuuuuuuu!

Love the lyrics in this one:

    I live cement
    I hate this street
    Give dirt to me
    I bite lament
    This human form
    Where I was born
    I now repent
