Went to see this last night. Have to say, very surprised with how good it was. I thought it was going to be awful but the same people behind Knocked Up and Superbad have done it again. Some very funny scenes in it and Russell Brand is absolutley hilarious in it IMO. Definitely recommend you go see it.

Ya I havent seen it yet but a friend of mine said it was very good. Third movie in a couple of years from those guys thats has been excellent. Thats a pretty good record!

Not really something that catches my eye tbh, knocked up was fun and superbad i thought was really awful.

But seemingly Russel Brand is surprisingly good in this and pretty much steals the show.

He is excellent and just seems to be himself(the character is very similar to him). Some very funny lines and great delivery from him.

saw this on tuesday. thought it was very good, not quite as good as knocked up or superbad but still great none the less

Russell Brand was the most surprising thing about it - some of his characteristics remain, but his character is a likable one who won't do your head in. Still think Jason Segel and Kristen Bell did a better job, but Brand isn't as infuriating as usual.

Overall though was disapointed: some funny moments alright, but not up to the standard of Knocked Up. Entertaining, but nothing special: held together by the strong cast and stronger second half.

    Great ad campaign though!

Saw this yesterday and thought it was very good. Incredible how the same people who made Superbad and Knocked Up can still come up with good comedy films without resorting to repetitiveness.

    The genius of Judd Apatow.

Not as sexist as Knocked Up, not as much Jonah Hill as Superbad, works for me :) solid Friday night film

Was watching 'How I Met your Mother' yesterday and there was a scene where Marshall (Jason Segal) goes to get brunch on his own and is mocked for being on his own. Reminded me of that scene from the trailer where he is going to get dinner on his own. And of course this was written by Jason Segal...

Just back from the cinema. Thought this was a pretty good film.

I didn't think Jason Segel pulled off the lead role. He never seemed to have that carisma or presence that marks out a leading role. Steve Carrell did it in The 40 Year Old Virgin. Seth Rogen did it in Knocked Up. Jonah Hill sowed the potential he has in Superbad. But for me, Segel dosen't have it (or at least didn't have it in this film).

I though Mila Kunis was absolutely, drop dead gorgeous in every scene she was it...but then again she is my type:p. She did well with the role she had, and shrugged off her That 70s Show character, to show she as a future as a rom-coms. Can't wait to see her in Max Payne.

To repeat other peoples comments, I thought Russell Brand did very well with his character. It would have been very easy to ham up his character, and go overboard. Brand resisted this temptation, and his character was likable....even though he stole the leads girlfriend!

There are a few gags that miss the target (Jonah Hills character just doesn't suit his particular comic skills, and a lot of his wise cracks go amiss), but it hits the right notes 90% of the time.

The film is a little on the long side (almost 2 hours), but is overall entertaining and worth checking out.

P.S. way too much male full frontal nudity for my liking:p

By the way, did anyone see Day & Night this week in the Indo? The reviewer kept on calling Jason Segel Peter Bretter (his character name) - e.g. Peter's script contains some very funny moments etc.. (paraphrasing). Pretty stupid typo - don't know where the Irish press get their critics from sometimes.

The trailers for FSM make it look awful. Plus I really don't like Russel Brand. May avoid this one.

I didn't see any of the trailers, so can't really comment on that.

I went with a friend who really hates Russell Brand, but she came out saying that he was actually pretty good.

Jack Black, Michael Cera, David Cross, Oliver Platt, Hank Azaria
    That'll do me!

I think Harold Ramis (or Egon) is incredibly under-rated as a director anyhoo!

seen it last night... yeah its pretty good, definitely quite a few lol moments. Bit long though imo, it should of ended half an hour before it did.

Also, I agree, Brand did an excellent job, he pulled off some excellent lines. Also I thought the lack of any significant musical score gave a lot of the scenes that Office/Peepshow feel.

Saw this Friday night and like most of the posters here, liked it.
I actually liked Segal and thought he did a good job.
Paul Rudd was great as the surfer stoner guy.
I've yet to see Knocked Up or Superbad somehow so will check those out now.

Paul Rudd is ciminally underused in movies. I don't think I've seen him in a comedy movie and not laughed at every scene he's in.

    +1, he's great.

I really enjoyed the film, Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis were the big draws for me. But it was much funnier than I expected, the TV spot didn't seem as inspired.

Also agree. Usually has some of the best lines in the Apatow movies, such as "If life gives you lemons, **** the lemons and bail"

Yeah definitely one of the funniest of the crew. For some reason, I always associate him with "Where we're going, we don't need roads". I know I should imagine Doc Brown, but I loved the BTTF quoting in Knocked Up :)

Not as good as people made it out to be.

Russell Brand saved it in the same way that Dylon Moran saved Run Fatboy, Run.

Not sure why people are surpirsed by Brand. He's a very talented and funny indiividual.

Just back from it. I enjoyed it even if my cinema did make the last ten minutes torture to watch. During the puppet scene, which I was loving the projector just died and after waiting a few minutes I went out to complain only to be told that it would be back on in a min. Fifteen minutes later it started once more, by this stage three quaters of those in attendence had left. For the remainder of the film the projector stopped evey two minutes. It started at nine and ended at eleven twenty. Ended up getting a free pass as compensation.

I really enjoyed it. There were some great moments and like I said the puppet scene was fantastic. Shame only one of Dracula's Lament is included on the OST. I've noticed a lot of people calling it a Judd Aptow film, which is quite apt though it does a disservice to Segel whose screenplay was very good.

that restuarant scene is one of my all time favourite scenes. Absolutely cacked myself at it.

'herers our time machine right here'

Another huge Paul Rudd fan, definitely has one of the best comic timings out there.

Just back from it, very enjoyable. Some laugh out loud moments from all the characters. Although thought Hill wasn't great even though I'm a fan. Brand was surpisingly good 'thats not the code of the ocean!'. I can see this movie being the new quote fest.

I'd say he's zaney at best, and goes on some peculiar rants.
    Not my cup of tea.

I think he's really funny, but he basically just plays himself in the film so if you don't like him, you won't like that character!

Overall I thought it was ok, some very funny bits, but at times I felt like some of the scenes to move along the main storyline were slow and a little unneccessary.

Maybe because he's a gobsh*te and wouldn't now funny if it came up and cut off his stupid hair. Anyone who thinks he is funny should look for his appearance on "Have I Got News For You", where he couldn't keep up with the jokes, started spouting random crap in the attempt to be funny and at one point, left to go the toilet for 10mins. I don't care how funny people say this film is supposed to be, I'll never go to see it.

Jason Segel wrote this film, did he not? So it's funny mainly because of him, though the stellar cast pulled it off well. Some very funny and catchy lines, "oh the weather outside is .. weather" but I thought some bits just seemed to lag a tiny bit.

I really really want to see "A Taste For Blood"

    For those that are interested:

And the official site of Crime Scene, with Sarah Marshall

C'mon ... Genius is a bit much & all he did was produce FSM. Apatow also wrote Celtic Pride ... nuff said.

Any chance of a film not about a nerd with a impossibly hot g/f ?
    That's repetitive.

The 'smear campaign' posters around the place: e.g. "You suck Sarah Marshall" on white and black lettering.

thought it was a great film, brand was hilarious but then again i always thought he was funny, and severely mental

paul rudd is another good actor, i wonder how he'd do as a main charater in a film though as he seems to excel at the 2nd or 3rd characters in his films

Without a doubt. Seth Rogen stepped up superbly from supporting role in The 40-Year Old Virgin to lead in Knocked up. Jason Segal did the same for Sarah Marshall. I'll do cartwheels the day Paul Rudd gets the chance to do the same.

Not too bad, as chick-flick type films go (which even though it tries not to be, it still is imo!) Especially as it helpfully had the extremely hot Mila Kunis in a lead role!
I would have loved to have seen the full length Dracula musical, it looked brilliant.....

I thought the male frontal nudity bits were comic genius, it was so well done.
You think its over NO WAIT THERE IT GOES AGAIN. hehehe.

Also agree with the Paul Rudd comments, i nearly wet myself after
"Oh the weather outside is ......weather..."

I went to see this last night and enjoyed it. Its not hilarious but I did laugh out loud a few times. By far the funniest bits for me were the various clips from Sarah Marshall's TV show. Particularly the last one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

    Bump for this..

Watched it this evening and as a huge Apatow fan (as I've already proved in some of my posts in the thread), I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed at the film. Maybe I hyped it up too much but I felt a similar amount of disappointment when I saw 'Superbad' (OK, that was much much worse)! :o

It's about time Jason Segal got a leading role and his writing was, for the most part, very competent. The film, as it stood, was a very witty film and quite accurate but it's not hilarious (by any means).

The cast are all pretty much excellent (especially Segal, Rudd and Brand) - but something about a lot of the jokes felt somewhat recycled - like I'd seen them before.

All in all, it's a very good film - but not the "laugh-fest" I'd expected.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,588 ✭✭✭JP Liz

Ok movie it was funny in parts Segel and Brand were excellent

I was kinda shocked at the male frontal nudity

Kristen and Mila were bad casting choices. Mila looks about 12

    Saw this last night.
Very poor effort at a comedy.
    Script was threadbare,cliched ,and unfunny.
Think they just made it up as they went along,it was like something written by a depressed 12 year old.
    Acting was woeful too.
Getting tired of Judd Apatow and his so called 'Comedies' .
They are about as funny as a wet fish across the face.
