hi guys im starting to try and get more fit. ive started cycling 2 miles a day and i am doing 100 crouches a night before bed. im 17, 5,6-7 and bout 9 stone. obviously im just starting. ive noticed a small bit of figure coming along with the crunches around my stomach aslo my stamina has increased a bit from cycling. I did 3 miles last night rather than 2. Am I doing ok? Should i expect a nice 6 pack from the crunches if i keep it at those rates and how long until that happens? Also, what would you guys think i should start with in weights?

I wouldnt bother with the situps at all myself. I would advise getting a chinning bar, only ~€11 in argos, you can do leg raises to work your abs on them, abs become visible at low body fat. you cannot spot reduce fat. Chins and pullups are great exercises.

    check out www.exrx.net

You can get a great set of weights at www.irish-lifting.com

Don't get the crappy plastic/cement plates, they don't sell them anyway.

+ if i were to drink 1 litre of half apple juice half oj juice, would that cover my daily fruit advisery? also if i were to drink 2 litres of water a day, would it be ok to drink 1/3 at 8am, 1/3 at 4pm and 1/3 at 8pm? also how much milk for protien should i drink?

That would certainly not cover your daily fruit needs.
You could do that with the water, but do you really not think that you could just have 8 glasses a day?Obviously when you are training, you need water aswell so it wouldn't really work.
You would have to drink a ****load of milk everyday to get your protein requirements. Why not drink some milk and eat protein rich foods like nuts, fish, steak, chicken etc?
To be honest,I think you are approaching your diet the wrong way.It wouldn't be a bad idea to look at some of the stickies at the top of the fitness forum.

The conventional wisdom around these parts is that you would be better off eating an apple/orange/pear/banana/handful of grapes and drinking a glass of water with it.

One of the above would be 1 of your 5 a day, plus you get all the goodness from the skin / non liquidy bits.

Standard juice from a carton is perdominantly carbs and not much goodness.

B0llocks on the situps/crunches, they're pointless on their own. You'll just be another skinny guy with gangly arms and flat chest. It depends what ya want, but if you can, get a good starter program, hit the weights, and knock up a diet that follows the guidelines in the stickies, but that ALSO (and this is crucial) appeals to you.

had a look at the stickies. basically where do i start towards abs and pelvis area?
is 100 crunches a night and morning ok? how long until results?

i know that i sound stupid by asking these questions but i wpuld like to get a rough estimate...

Diet , Diet , Diet ... the only way to get visible abs is to reduce your bodyfat, usually 10% or lower. Doing hundreds of crunches is pointless , your exercising your abs alright but it wont remove the fat that is hiding them.

Even a "pinchable inch" of fat is too much for abs, that sounds like you could be at anything up to 20% bodyfat (or more)

Read the stickies, get your diet sorted then that combined with a good workout program and you will eventually reach your goal.

    Good Luck

how do i find out my percentage of fat? callipers, yes? how would u use them and where could i get a cheap one?

Hey eire - just watch out with all that cycling and crunches or you could wind up over-working your hip-flexors and pulling them. I'd go for a more balanced workout - something with press-ups, burpees, chin-ups, squats (bodyweight to start with and then 1 legged squats), planks, caterpillars, boot-strappers etc.

For some idea of what I'm talking about check out this stuff:

Edit: at 17 and 9st please do not go on a diet to try and see your abs. You need to build yourself up first. Eat plenty of meat, fish, eggs and nuts and just eat plenty in general. Work out hard. Get enough sleep.

This is very true and I know from experience. Eating the right foods is essential. When I was your age I was eating less to try and lower my body fat along with running 5 days a week and doing circuits of push ups, pull ups, crunchs etc. It worked body fat was < 5%, but I just became malnurished from not eating right, particularly iron when through the floor.

Try not to focus or getting results fast they dont last, its more important to do the training in the right way, eating the right foods. You seem to be focusing completely on your abs. As mentioned earlier this isn't a good idea your better off doing a more rounded work out than just the one exercise, it wont get you very far.

In summary: Eat right and dont do just crunches you wont the results you want.
